Govt may revise LPG connections target to 20 million for FY17

Officials of oil marketing companies indicate that the government may revise upwards its FY17 target for new cooking gas connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to 20 million.

Moneycontrol BureauThe success of bottled cooking gas distribution scheme Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) may prompt the government to revise upwards the programme’s FY17 target by 33 percent, Mint reported Friday, citing two officials from oil market companies.

The 33-percent revision translates into 20 million new LPG connections this fiscal, up from 15 million previously.

While the government had allocated Rs 2,000 crore for PMUY for FY17, the new target would come at additional expense of Rs 800 crore. The government plans to spend Rs 8,000 crore over three years on the scheme.

Late last month, Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that 11 million cooking gas connections were distributed under the programme.
