Minister Dinesh Trivedi introduced 96 new trains as part of the 12th plan. His list consists of 75 new Express trains (inclusing two double-decker trains and one Shatabdi) and 21 passenger trains, besides 75 new services in Mumbai suburban rail network, 50 new services in Kolkata suburban rail network and 15 in Chennai suburban rail network.
However, chances of the magnet-pulled single rail Bullet trains that India has been aspiring for still remains a dream. Six studies have been carried out so far and one more is set to be done this year. The Delhi-Ajmer route and Ahmedabad-Pune via Mumbai are among the top runners for implementation of the project. However, with government finances in the limbo, it does not seem that the plan will materialise anytime soon.Trivedi announced that Guru Parikrama special trains will run through Amritsar, Patna, Nanded routes apart from introduction of 45 new rail routes. Additionally, route of 39 trains is set to be extended within the country and frequency of 23 trains to be increased.
He seeks to develop nearly 100 stations via the PPP route in the next five years and Trivedi has urged the state governments to come forward with facilitating the process through funds as well as granting free land for new line projects.
The minister proposed to achieve 6,500 km electrification of routes, especially the Udhampura, Srinagar and Baramullah line. He also said that 700 km of double tracking will be carried out in FY 2012-13.
India is now set to provide rail connectivity to neighbouring countries, and the ministry is planning to set up a new line from Agartala to Akura in Bangladesh.
