The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is maintaining a “rigorous oversight” on airfares and flight capacities ahead of the festive season to ensure there are no steep hikes in ticket prices.
During periods of high travel demand, domestic airfares often surge—particularly on high-traffic routes. While airfares remain deregulated, the DGCA has the authority to monitor pricing trends and take corrective measures in case of excessive fare increases.
In a statement on Sunday, the Civil Aviation Ministry said, “DGCA will maintain rigorous oversight of airline fares and flight capacities to protect passengers’ interests during the festive season.”
To meet the expected surge in demand, major carriers have announced additional flights across various routes.
IndiGo will operate around 730 additional services across 42 sectors.Air India and Air India Express will together add 486 additional flights across 20 sectors. SpiceJet plans to operate 546 additional flights across 38 sectors.
The ministry, however, did not disclose details on when the additional flights will commence or how long they will operate.
The proactive move comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure affordability and adequate capacity during India’s busiest travel period of the year.
