Global passenger airplane maker Boeing raised its India forecast by 15% for the next 20 years on Wednesday. Now, Boeing is betting on the growth of the Indian economy and air traffic. Boeing said that India will need a whopping 1,320 planes worth USD 150 billion in the next 20 years. This bullish forecast soared the Boeing stock in US.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Dinesh Keskar president of Boeing India said that Boeing looks for an amicable settlement with Air India as they have been one of their valuable customers.
Keskar further stated, "I am not looking for necessarily selling 200 airplanes over the next 20 years. My main focus is on the customer like Jet Airways and SpiceJet who needs airplanes."
"For example, Jet Airways has a backlog of 39 airplanes and Spicejet has a backlog of 30 airplanes. With that and some leased airplanes, they are adding effectively 20-22 airplanes in India which is line with what our competition is doing," he added. Below is the verbatim transcript of the interview. Also watch the accompanying video. Q: The Air India order of Dreamliners has seen inordinate delays. The first Dreamliner should have been delivered to Air India in September 2008 and around 18 by March 2011. When do you expect to make the deliveries to Air India?
A: At Aero India earlier this year, we said that we will make the first delivery of 787 Dreamliner to Air India in the fourth quarter of this year. Q: Air India needs the cash to continue to be operational. It has been trying for a bailout form the government and has managed to get some funds. At this point of time, it has been looking at raising funds from everywhere. Has the Air India management reached out to you to expedite the compensation issue?
A: No. We are in discussions with them. The Ex-Im Bank of United States has spoken to Air India regarding the cash for this airplane. The Ex-Im deals are so good that they offer interest rate below 3%. The cost of ownership for Air India will be very low compared to 9% in Indian markets. All these things will help. Q: Is Boeing trying to bring down the compensation amount of USD 850 million from what was sent by Air India in its notice?
A: We are having cordial conversations, not only with Air India, but also many other airlines. Air India is one of our valued customers. We will amicably reach a settlement with them.
