'New urea investment policy to be rolled out over 4-5 yrs'

The Committee of Secretaries has been working on a new draft for urea investment policy. Saumitra Chaudhuri, member of the Planning Commission indicated that they have been discussing many alternatives for the new urea investment policy currently and it will be rolled out over next four-five years.

The Committee of Secretaries has been working on a new draft for urea investment policy. Saumitra Chaudhuri, member of the Planning Commission indicated that they have been discussing many alternatives for the new urea investment policy currently. He told CNBC-TV18 in an interview that the new urea investment policy will be rolled out over next four-five years.


He further pointed out that the new policy should support investments in new capacities. However, he feels gas availability could become a problem for the new urea investment.


The nutrient-based subsidy (NBS) for urea report was presented to group of ministers (GoM) and the report is currently with the cabinet.

Q: What should we expect from the new draft policy?


A: The report is not yet complete. We have been discussing many alternatives. People have to be convinced about the viability. The new investment policy will be rolled out over a period of next four-five years.


Whatever we craft should make sense in the medium-term. In the medium-term, all prices will not be as they are today. We have to look at it as viability in the future where prices change. It
