The government is striking a defiant tone. Veerappa Moily, corporate affairs minister, says that the government is not compelled to respond to the notice issued by Vodafone on the ongoing tax tussle between the government and Vodafone, reports CNBC-TV18.
Moily says, this subject is dealt by the Union finance ministry and they can definitely give an appropriate reply. This is a serious matter, which is also under the consideration of the Government of India and they will look into it.
“There are times when retrospective amendments are needed and retrospective amendments are not new.” said Moily. Vodafone, in a statement, said that the 2012 finance bill proposals violated international legal protections granted to Vodafone and other foreign investors in India.
