India’s gold reserves cross $100 billion

India just hit a glittering record: the Reserve Bank’s gold reserves have topped $100 billion for the first time ever.

According to RBI data, gold holdings rose by $3.6 billion to $102.36 billion in the week ending October 10, even as overall forex reserves dipped slightly to $697.78 billion. That means gold now makes up 14.7 percent of India’s total reserves, the highest share since the late ’90s.

What’s interesting is how we got here. The RBI barely bought any gold this year, just 4 tons between January and September, compared to 50 tons last year. The surge came almost entirely from valuation gains as global prices jumped nearly 65 percent in 2025.

With central banks worldwide diversifying away from the US dollar and geopolitical risks driving a flight to hard assets, gold’s status as the ultimate safe haven looks stronger than ever.

Gold’s rally isn’t just lifting jewellery demand, it’s also fuelling a surge in gold loans. At South Indian Bank, the rush is palpable. “Demand is extremely strong,” CEO and MD P.R. Seshadri told Moneycontrol, noting that customers are borrowing more as their ornaments now fetch higher value.

However, the boom comes with a note of caution. With prices climbing at an unprecedented pace, lenders are treading carefully. “We’re reassessing margins and loan-to-value ratios due to the rapid increase in gold prices,” Seshadri said.

In essence, while gold loans are glittering in popularity, South Indian Bank is choosing prudence over exuberance — tightening its risk management even as the yellow metal continues to shine brighter.

"Gold has seen a steady increase, primarily due to risk off and dollar weakness, which has led funds to move into Gold as a safe haven. It has also been amplified with Central Banks storing surplus in gold instead of US Treasuries. We believe the Gold will remain a key commodity and see flows as geopolitical risk is high and alternatives are very limited," Shravan Shetty, Managing Director, Primus Partners, said.

Gold Silver Price Today Live: Silver December futures inch higher amid global cues

Silver futures for December 5, 2025 (MCX symbol: FUTCOM SILVER 05DEC2025) closed at Rs 1,68,100 per kg, up Rs 649 or 0.39% for the session. The contract recorded an intraday high of Rs 1,70,415 and a low of Rs 1,67,663, reflecting modest volatility amid global market developments and ongoing safe-haven demand.

Total traded volume stood at 21,234 lots, with open interest at 25,624, indicating sustained participation from traders. The notional turnover for the session was Rs 10.76 crore.

Analysts said the silver uptrend was supported by global uncertainty, demand from industrial and investment segments, and a relatively softer US dollar.

Gold futures for December 5, 2025 (MCX symbol: FUTCOM GOLD 05DEC2025) traded firm at Rs 1,31,026 per 10 grams, up Rs 1,380 or 1.06% for the session. The contract touched an intraday high of Rs 1,32,294 and a low of Rs 1,29,852, reflecting continued volatility driven by global cues and festive buying in domestic markets.

Total traded volume stood at 10,805 lots, with an open interest of 16,100, indicating steady participation from traders. The notional turnover was reported at Rs 14.23 crore.

Gold Silver Price Today Live: Silver withdrawals ease market tightness, posts weekly gain of over 8%
