In a big boost for private auto players, it is learnt that the vehicle testing and calibration will now be made open to private players too, reports CNBC-TV18’s Shweta Kothari quoting sources, and this after the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) raised queries on the quantum of government expenditure that goes on vehicle testing.
The Road Ministry is also mulling a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for vehicle testing agencies based on European standards, which will aim to open vehicle testing for private players in the country, say sources. The new norms will be developed by Standing Committee under Central Motor Vehicle ACT of India.
When this new SOP comes into effect, the Road Ministry will regulate all vehicle testing agencies in the country including RAI Is Automotive Research Agency Of India (ARAI), RDE Is Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (VRDE) and Central Institute Of Road & Transport (CIRT).
According to sources, the new SOP for vehicle testing will also open up the automotive field for research and development in a big way.
