Samajwadi party opposition stalls meet on GST Bill

CNBC-TV18’s Siddharth Zarabi, quoting sources, reports that Samajwadi party opposition to the GST Bill during the meeting of the Yashwant Sinha panel today stalled all discussion on the Bill.

The Yashwant Sinha panel on Friday met to discuss the GST Bill and the report on the Bill. However, after an intense debate and opposition from the Samjwadi Party, the panel did not adopt the report. The panel is likely to return the Constitution Amendment Bill to the Lok Sabha, seeking several changes, reports CNBC-TV18’s Siddharth Zarabi, quoting sources. The Yashwant Sinha panel is to meet again on July 19.

It was expected that the report would be adopted today. Sources add that members of  the Samjwadi Party in the Standing Committee Of Finance opposed the introduction of the Goods And Services Tax (GST) in its entirety.  Uttar Pradesh is one of the two states in India which had problems even with the introduction of the value-added tax (VAT).
