Amid the buzz around entry of Elon Musk’s Starlink in India, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal met the top executives in New Delhi on Wednesday. The minister took to X to give the update regarding the crucial discussion. The Starlink delegation comprising Senior Director Ryan Goodnight and Vice President Chad Gibbs met the minister to delve on future investment plans in the country.
The discussions also covered “Starlink's cutting-edge technology platform, their existing partnerships,” Goyal added in his X post. The meeting comes a month after Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel announced their partnerships with Elon Musk’s company to bring satellite telecom in India.
Apart from Jio and Airtel, Vodafone Idea had also said that it is in talks with Starlink to provide satellite communication services in India.
Earlier in an interview to Moneycontrol, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had said that satellite communication is crucial solution for connectivity ecosystem. On the issue of Starlink's India entry, Scindia had said that the process of licensing is between the regulatory system and the company. he had also spoke about telecom regulator Trai to finalise spectrum pricing among other things.
Meanwhile, IN-SPACe has projected that by 2033, India’s space economy will grow to $44 billion. This means that India will account for eight percent of world market share, which at present stands at just two percent.
