The 7th Pay Commission, headed by former chief secretary K Sudhakar Rao, has recommended a 27.5 percent hike on basic salary of government employees.
Pressure on the Siddaramaiah government to decide on the pay hike intensified after the Karnataka State Government Employees Association announced plans for an indefinite strike beginning in August. Earlier, in March 2023, the then Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had implemented an interim 17 percent salary hike.
The current administration under Siddaramaiah is expected to add a further 10.5 percentage points to meet the total recommended increase of 27.5 percent in basic salary, as per sources familiar with the matter.
This is expected to cost the government exchequer an additional Rs 17,440.15 crore annually.
