Telangana Elections 2023: Can Congress capitalise on Owaisi no-show in his bastion against BJP leader Raja Singh?

Telangana Elections 2023: BJP’s fiery leader T Raja Singh has won two elections on the trot from Hyderabad's Goshamahal seat, where the AIMIM is headquartered. Telangana Elections 2023: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi.

A mention of Goshamahal, located right in the heart of Hyderabad’s Old City in Telangana, instantly brings to mind a 46-year old politician with a saffron cap/turban. He is BJP’s firebrand lawmaker Thakur Raja Singh who has earned the sobriquet – Hindu ka sher – for his rabble-rousing anti-Muslim rhetoric.

Falling under Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat, the bastion of AIMIM, the segment has a diverse cultural ethos with around 2.70 lakh voters. It is home to an estimated 60,000 people of the Lodhi or Lodha community, to which the incumbent BJP MLA T Raja Singh belongs. Lodhas migrated from the Bundelkhand region, now in northern Madhya Pradesh, during the Mughal emperors.

The Lodh (Lodha or Lodhi) community has been firmly in the BJP camp, having produced two leading BJP leaders – late Kalyan Singh, who served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, and Sadhvi Uma Bharati, who had a brief stint as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister.
