What is gastroparesis?

Gastroparesis occurs when the stomach's motility—the movement of the stomach muscles—becomes impaired. This condition means that food, liquids, and digestive juices remain in the stomach for longer than usual as the stomach fails to empty its contents in a timely manner, says Dr Niharica Chand, ERS Healthcare’s gastroenterologist. The primary mechanism behind gastroparesis involves damage or dysfunction of the vagus nerve, which plays a crucial role in controlling stomach muscle contractions. According to Chand, several underlying conditions can lead to gastroparesis, including:

Diabetes: Particularly poorly controlled diabetes can cause diabetic neuropathy, affecting the vagus nerve and leading to delayed gastric emptying.

Neurological disorders: Conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis can disrupt the normal functioning of the stomach muscles.
