Calcium is one of the most important minerals in the human body, helping to build and maintain strong bones and teeth. In addition to keeping bones healthy, calcium also aids in muscle contractions, nerve signalling, blood clotting and heart function. For women, the need of calcium is further more important as hormonal changes that reduce bone density start from puberty—pregnancy, breast feeding and menopause being the most crucial stages. Yet despite its significance, it is still a common problem in women of all ages.

Inadequate shaking, not enough muscle exercise or regular exercise through activities of daily living — as well as diet and vitamin D level factors — also can contribute to decreased calcium absorption.
