Chikungunya symptoms and treatment: How to protect yourself from the virus-spreading mosquitoes

Chikungunya cases in China: The virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and can lead to fever, joint pain and malaise. With occurrences of the outbreak on the rise, authorities are calling for more precautionary measures to limit the spread and protect public health.

Chikungunya cases have gone out of control in China, with more than 7,000 cases reported in just a few weeks. The outbreak, with its epicentre in Foshan city in Guangdong province, has thrown the healthcare infrastructure into chaos, and authorities are trying to control the disease from spreading.

While this disease is rarely lethal, symptoms of chikungunya include severe joint pain, high fever, and rash. Young children and elderly individuals are particularly at risk because of their weaker immune systems. Says Dr Meera Khanna, an infectious disease expert in Mumbai, “Chikungunya spreads through mosquito bites, and prevention is the most effective defense.”
