Priyanka Chopra has always been open about the importance of her family, and in a recent interview, her mother, Madhu Chopra, shared a poignant memory that highlights the actress’s unwavering love and support. After the death of Priyanka's father, Ashok Chopra, on June 10, Madhu’s birthday was just six days later, on June 16.
Despite the family's deep grief, Priyanka insisted on celebrating her mother’s first birthday without her husband. Priyanka’s determination to honour the occasion showed just how much she valued her family's emotional well-being during a difficult time.
Madhu Chopra recalled in an interview with Lehren Retro that Priyanka, despite the sorrow surrounding her father’s passing, pushed for the birthday celebration to go ahead. “He passed away on June 10 and my birthday is on June 16. I was turning 60, and they had planned a big party for me. The whole family was already there due to his illness. After his passing, we were grieving, but Priyanka insisted that we go ahead with the party and asked everyone to stay. She said, ‘That’s what dad would have wanted.’”
To add a special touch, Priyanka also arranged for her Dostana co-star John Abraham to attend the party. Madhu remembered, “They had requested John to come at midnight, wrapped like a birthday present. Imagine that!”
However, not everyone in the family agreed with the festive atmosphere. Madhu Chopra shared that some relatives were critical of the celebration, questioning Priyanka’s grief. “But the rest of the family sat there gloomily, saying, ‘Look at her! She’s dancing! Does she not grieve for her husband?’” But Priyanka stood firm, telling her family, “I am honouring his wish and you better fall in line with it.”
For the unaware, Priyanka’s father, Dr. Ashok Chopra, passed away in 2013 after battling cancer. To commemorate him, Priyanka had “Daddy’s little girl” tattooed on her wrist in his handwriting, a lasting tribute to the bond they shared.
