As many as 14 of Uttar Pradesh's 80 Lok Sabha seats will vote in the sixth round of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections on May 25. Uttar Pradesh, which has the highest representation in the 543-member Lok Sabha, is the only state, along with West Bengal (42 seats) and Bihar (40) to hold polling in all the phases.
Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Phulpur, Allahabad, Ambedkar Nagar, Shrawasti, Domariyaganj, Basti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Lalganj, Azamgarh, Jaunpur, Machhlishahr and Bhadohi constituencies are going to polls in Phase 6.
The state is witnessing a direct contest between the BJP-led ruling NDA, Congress-led opposition INDIA, and the BSP.
Here are the key candidates and constituencies to watch out for.
Sultanpur: Located along the Gomti River in Uttar Pradesh, this seat was won by the BJP candidate Maneka Gandhi, who secured 459,196 votes, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. This time Gandhi is up against Bhim Nishad of the SP and BSP candidate Udraj Verma.
Pratapgarh: It is a prestige battle between Sangam Lal Gupta of the BJP and SP Singh Patel from the SP. Gupta won in the 2019 Lok Sabha seats.
Allahabad: The prestigious seat of Allahabad is witnessing a close contest between Neeraj Tripathi of the BJP and Ujjwal Rewati Raman Singh of the Congress. Being one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites, the constituency remains a crucial one for BJP. In 2019, BJP won Allahabad by a margin of 1.84 lakh votes. In 2019, the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party were in alliance.
Jaunpur: It’s been 44 years since Jaunpur gave consecutive mandate to any party and 53 years since it repeated an MP. The 2024 contest is a three-cornered one between the BJP, the Samajwadi Party and the BSP, which changed its candidate at the last-minute. BJP candidate Kripashankar Singh is up against SP’s Babu Singh Kushwaha and Shyam Singh Yadav from BSP.
Azamgarh: The stage is set for a direct contest between Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’ of the BJP and Dharmendra Yadav from the SP. BSP candidate Sabeeha Ansari is also in the fray. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had won from the seat.
Phulpur: The BJP has replaced Keshari Devi Patel with Praveen Patel, the Phulpur MLA. Patel will lock horns with Amaranth Maurya (SP), Jagannath Path (BSP). The BJP won this seat for the first time in 2014 when Keshav Prasad Maurya won it with a massive lead of 3.08 lakh votes with vote share of 52.4 percent.
The counting will be held on June 4.
