A new initiative has been introduced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to prevent misconceptions and confusion about the electoral process. "Myth vs. Reality Chart"
As part of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) introduced a "Myth vs. Reality Register" on Tuesday in an effort to stop the dissemination of false information and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, inaugurated a new platform at Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi. The platform, accessible at https://mythvsreality.eci.gov.in/, aims to provide credible and authenticated election-related information conveniently.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the "Myth vs Reality Register" will feature a continuously updated factual matrix, including debunked misinformation and fresh FAQs. This initiative is a crucial step in the ECI's ongoing efforts to combat misinformation and ensure the integrity of the electoral process.
CEC Rajiv Kumar previously highlighted misinformation as a significant challenge alongside issues like financial influence, muscle power, and Model Code of Conduct violations during the announcement of elections.
“With the proliferation of misinformation and false narratives becoming a growing concern in many democracies globally, this innovative and proactive initiative by ECI is an effort to ensure that voters have access to accurate and verified information throughout the electoral process,” ECI highlighted.
How does it work?
The 'Myth vs Reality Register' has been designed in a user-friendly format, covering various areas of myths and misinformation surrounding topics such as EVM/VVPAT, Electoral Roll/Voter Services, Conduct of Elections, and others.
It provides already debunked election-related fake information, potential myths circulating on social media platforms, FAQs on important topics, and reference material under different sections for all stakeholders. The register will be regularly updated.
According to the ECI, 'The Myth vs Reality Register' serves as a comprehensive repository of factual information to dispel myths and falsehoods circulating during the election period, thereby empowering individuals to make informed decisions.
