Lok Sabha elections in Bihar’s Siwan are due on May 25 in the sixth phase. Siwan is renowned as the hometown of India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and the multiple-term former Member of Parliament, the infamous Baahubali Shahabuddin.
Shahabuddin, once a prominent member of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and a former Member of Legislative Assembly and Member of Parliament, wielded considerable influence even while incarcerated for several cases. Following his demise, Shahabuddin’s wife Hina Shahab will contest the elections independently this time from Siwan.
13 candidates, including Shahab, are vying for victory in Siwan, including the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) Vijay Lakshmi Kushwaha and RJD's Avadh Bihari Chaudhary.
Siwan Lok Sabha constituency comprises Siwan, Badharia, Daraunda, Jiradei, Raghunathpur, and Darauli assembly seats, boasting over 24 lakh voters, with approximately 18 lakh in Siwan alone. Caste demographics play a crucial role, with Muslims constituting 3 lakh, Yadavs 2.5 lakh, Kushwahas 1.25 lakh, Sahnis 80 thousand, Upper Castes 4 lakh, and EBCs 2.5 lakh.
NDA candidate Vijay Lakshmi Kushwaha is the wife of former MLA Ramesh Singh Kushwaha, while RJD’s Avadh Bihari Chaudhary is a veteran politician who has served as MLA from Siwan Sadar six times.
Notably, this is Chaudhary's first foray into Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, Hina Shahab, contesting for the fourth time, had previously run under the RJD banner but decided to go solo this time, distancing herself from former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s family.
Latching on to the opportunity, RJD detractors like Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM and rebel Congress leader Pappu Yadav have declared their support for Shahab.
The RJD has an alliance with the Congress and three Left parties in Bihar called the Mahagathbandhan.
