Jharkhand election results live: A look at Jharkhand’s volatile political history

Despite abundant mineral wealth, Jharkhand has faced considerable political turbulence since its separation from Bihar in 2000. Among its seven chief ministers, Raghubar Das stands out as the only one to complete an uninterrupted five-year term. The state has also been under President's Rule three times.

In the assembly elections so far, no party has won a clear majority on its own. The political scene has been largely dominated by two parties - the BJP and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). The 2019 elections saw a significant shift when Hemant Soren led the JMM to power with support from Congress and other smaller allies.

However, Hemant Soren's recent term was cut short when he was arrested in an alleged land scam case. Champai Soren, a senior JMM leader, took over as chief minister and served for about 153 days. When Hemant Soren returned to the chief minister's position after his release, Champai Soren, claiming he had been humiliated by the JMM, switched allegiance to the BJP.

Jharkhand assembly election results live: Key focus of NDA and INDIA in the current polls

According to exit polls, Jharkhand appears headed for a close contest between the JMM-Congress coalition and the BJP-led NDA.

This marks Jharkhand's fifth assembly election since its formation 24 years ago. The state's political history has been characterised by instability, with seven different chief ministers serving across 13 separate terms. An interesting pattern has emerged where no ruling party has managed to secure a consecutive second term.

The election campaign this time saw both alliances focusing on distinct issues. The NDA emphasised concerns about infiltration and corruption, while the INDIA bloc campaign centered on tribal rights, welfare programs, and alleged harassment of their communities.

The central welfare schemes of the BJP and the arrest and bail of chief minister Hemant Soren dominated the political discourse in the state.

The ruling alliance claims the arrest was politically motivated, as Soren was detained in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land fraud.

Jharkhand election results 2024 live: All eyes on who will form the next govt in the state

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its coalition partners are working to gain control of Jharkhand from the current ruling alliance of JMM, Congress, and RJD in the tribal-majority state.

In the 2019 state assembly elections, the JMM, led by Hemant Soren and aligned with the Congress-led UPA, secured 47 seats out of 82 in the state legislature.

This year saw significant political developments when chief minister Hemant Soren stepped down before being arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on corruption charges. Champai Soren, a senior leader and longtime associate of JMM founder Shibu Soren, briefly served as his replacement. However, after Hemant Soren was released on bail and resumed his position as chief minister, Champai Soren broke away from the party and subsequently joined the BJP.

The JMM sought to ignite Adivasi sentiment by highlighting Hemant Soren’s “unjust arrest.” Meanwhile, the BJP launched a counter-campaign, accusing the JMM-led government of permitting “illegal immigrants” from Bangladesh to settle in Santhal Pargana, a region with a significant tribal population.

Recent exit polls suggest the BJP has a slight advantage in Jharkhand, though they indicate a close race between the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) and the INDIA bloc. However, the Axis My India survey differs, predicting a clear majority for the alliance led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
