A 25-year-old man was arrested in southeastern Bengaluru for sharing a controversial video against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the wake of Operation Sindoor, officials said on Tuesday.
The individual, identified as F Nawaz, is an electrician living in a paying guest (PG) facility in Mangammanapalya, near Bandepalya in Bengaluru. He has been sent to Bengaluru Central Jail after being remanded to judicial custody, The Indian Express reported.
According to police, Nawaz had uploaded the video on a social media account under the name ‘Public Servant’. In the video, he questioned why no bomb had fallen on the Prime Minister's residence. “Today, India and Pakistan are at war. Why hasn’t Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence been bombed yet? When people were living peacefully, this war-like situation was created by PM Modi. His residence should be bombed first,” The Indian Express quoted him as saying in the video, which has now been deleted.
The police's social media monitoring team took notice of the video on its own and filed a case at the Bandepalya police station. Nawaz was soon identified, tracked down, and arrested. He was presented in a local court and remanded to judicial custody.
"Two days ago, a social media post criticising PM Modi and negative comments against him were posted from the account named Nawaz on Instagram. In this case, we secured a man and checked his background. We found him to be involved in a previous NDPS Act case. We have invoked sedition charges against him,” ANI quoted Joint Commissioner-East, Ramesh Banoth as saying.
During questioning, Nawaz claimed he believed the Prime Minister was responsible for the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, which led him to make the video, the report said.
He has been booked for creating a public nuisance and promoting enmity between different groups, and under relevant sections of the IT Act.
In a separate incident, the Karnataka Police also filed a case against a postgraduate student, Reshma N Bariga, for allegedly posting a message on Instagram criticising the Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor. The FIR was registered at the Konaje police station in Mangaluru based on a complaint.
