Meghalaya police are under increasing pressure after the mysterious death of 25-year-old law intern Namrata Bora, just days after the high-profile case of honeymooner Raja Raghuvanshi’s alleged murder. Bora, from Assam’s Golaghat district, died early Wednesday in what authorities initially called a road accident near Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi district. But her family has rejected the official version, filing a police complaint alleging foul play, ET reported.
Namrata, who lived in Guwahati’s Rukminigaon, had travelled to Shillong with four companions: Anayatul Wadud (a youth leader of the AIUDF and son of a party MLA), Mriganka Boruah, Pragya Dihingia and Gayatri Bora. The group was returning from Shillong when their car met with an accident around 5.30 am near Nongpoh. While the others suffered minor injuries, Namrata was declared dead on arrival at Nongpoh Civil Hospital, according to local media reports.
According to The Sentinel, the case has triggered a wave of speculation online, with Namrata’s family condemning “insensitive” social media posts. A community meeting in Assam urged media and netizens to avoid spreading unverified claims, calling for respect towards the grieving relatives.
Namrata’s brother, Rishabhananda Bora, filed an FIR at Nongpoh Police Station, naming all four companions as suspects. The family also lodged a separate complaint in Assam’s Dispur Police Station, questioning why Anayatul and Gayatri fled the scene while the others took Namrata to the hospital, according to ET.
Her father, Ramen Bora as cited by ET, raised further doubts: “When Namrata left the room, she took a regular phone instead of her iPhone. But why leave her iPhone behind if she was going to watch the sunrise? She also went out wearing casual clothes, unlike her usual outings. My daughter was particular about her attire. I demand a proper investigation”.
Meghalaya police have detained Namrata’s friends for questioning and conducted a postmortem, though the report remains undisclosed. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has requested Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma to conduct a fair inquiry into the death of Namrata Bora.
Namrata's family raised concerns about the accident, prompting Sarma to ask for a thorough investigation. The Meghalaya CM has assured a fair probe and Assam Police are also conducting a preliminary inquiry.
The incident follows the high-profile arrest of Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of murdering her husband during their Meghalaya honeymoon. With two suspicious deaths in quick succession, pressure is mounting on authorities to deliver transparency and justice.
