A dispute over the quality of chapatis served in the mess of the boys’ hostel at Central University of Karnataka in Kalaburagi led to a physical altercation on Friday and clashes in the campus over two days, leaving at least eight post-graduate students injured.
The argument began when some students from Bihar demanded machine-made chapatis, while South Indian students insisted on handmade chapatis. The disagreement quickly spiralled into a fight involving the two groups, India Today reported.
The police officials were informed about the situation, after which the Narona police reached the spot. The clash even led the police to baton-charge those trying to foment trouble.
According to the police, an injured student has been hospitalised and is currently receiving medical attention. Some students even barged into several hostel rooms on Friday night, threatening those belonging to the other group.
On Saturday morning, seven more students were injured in a second round of clash outside the library building, leading the university authorities to call police to campus.
“We forced the crowd of students to disperse, and the police team warned both sides of arrests and prosecution if there was more violence,” Kalaburagi SP Adduru Srinivasulu told TOI.
The incident follows another case in Karnataka a second-year MBBS student from Anantnag, Kashmir, studying at Al-Ameen Medical College in Bijapur, Karnataka, was allegedly subjected to brutal ragging and physical assault by senior students.
