Heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening brought life to a standstill across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), particularly hitting Gurugram hard. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for the region, cautioning residents for more rain on Thursday, according to a report by NavBharat Times.
The Wednesday downpour led to widespread waterlogging, traffic jams, and disruptions in daily life. In Gurugram, the situation became so severe that District Magistrate and District Disaster Management Authority Chairman, Ajay Kumar, issued an advisory late Wednesday evening. He urged all private and corporate offices to allow employees to work from home (WFH) on Thursday, to minimise inconvenience and ensure safety, NBT reported.
The advisory read, "All corporate offices and private institutions in the district are advised to allow employees to work from home on 10.07.2025 to help reduce traffic congestion and ensure public safety. Please stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official updates."
Across the city, several major roads and key intersections were submerged in rainwater. Areas like Sohna Road, MG Road, National Highway 8, Shadipur, Madhuban Chowk, and Old Rohtak Road reported significant water accumulation, making it nearly impossible for commuters to move. Social media was flooded with videos and complaints from residents stuck in traffic or dealing with flooded homes.
One user posted on X, "Jam for many hours at Sohna Road, Gurugram both sides! All preparedness, meetings, photos have yielded net zero results for common citizens! Ambulance stuck!" Another resident from Sushant Lok 1 complained about water entering homes, blaming poor drainage and lack of sewage systems.
Many lamented the routine chaos Gurugram faces every time it rains. “Even a short spell of rain quickly leads to traffic jams, waterlogged roads accompanied by floating garbage and debris. Not to forget prolonged power cuts,” wrote one user.
"I have been stuck for hours in waist-deep waters at Subhash Chowk. I finally managed to get the car out, but the gears got jammed. Water entered my vehicle too. It is a complete nightmare. I have no idea how I will reach home tonight. Cars are floating on Sohna Road," Chetan Agarwal, a city resident who was caught in Wednesday's chaos, was quoted by TOI as saying.
In response to the backlash, the Gurugram Municipal Corporation (MCG) said its teams were actively working on the ground, NBT reported. “Machinery is operational to ensure discharge of storm water. Drains are running at full capacity due to high rainfall,” the MCG stated. They also shared images of drainage work being carried out across the city, assuring residents that operations were underway at a war footing.
DCP (traffic) said Rajesh Mohan cops were deployed at waterlogging spots, including Sheetla Mata temple point, CRPF Camp Chowk, Sector 37 and Hero Honda Chowk. "Moreover, concerned departments were immediately informed about damage to the main water pipeline on SPR, which caused flooding," TOI quoted the DCP as saying.
