The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has mandated a ban on all transport and commercial goods vehicles that do not comply with BS-VI diesel, CNG, LNG, or electric vehicle standards from entering Delhi, starting July 1.
Similar restrictions will be extended to Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and Sonipat from Nov 1, 2025, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced on Wednesday. The rule will apply to the remaining NCR districts from April 1, 2026, it stated.
However, this restriction does not apply to vehicles registered in Delhi, as mentioned in the directive issued on Wednesday. The CAQM highlighted the limited progress in impounding end-of-life or overaged vehicles across Delhi-NCR.
The order specifically targets diesel vehicles below BS-VI norms, which are considered major contributors to air pollution. Only cleaner alternatives, BS-VI diesel, CNG, LNG, and electric-powered Light, Medium, and Heavy Goods Vehicles (LGVs, MGVs, HGVs), will be permitted entry.
Temporary exemptions have been granted to non-BS VI vehicles transporting essential goods or providing critical services, but only until October 31, 2026. After this deadline, even these vehicles will be required to shift to cleaner fuels.
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that measures are already underway to enforce the ban. “We will strictly follow the CAQM directions… 95 per cent of the work is complete to install the ANPR cameras. The identification of polluting vehicles at the border entry points will also be intensified,” he said.
The CAQM has instructed transport departments and traffic police in Delhi and neighbouring states to enforce the order at all 126 border entry points and 52 toll plazas, which are being equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras.
