The Vernal Equinox, also known as the Spring Equinox, is a significant astronomical event marking the arrival of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, moving from the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere. This phenomenon generally takes place around March 20–21 each year. In 2025, the Vernal Equinox is set to occur on March 20.

Equinoxes occur when the Earth's hemispheres are not tilted toward or away from the Sun. As a result, the Sun stands directly above the equator, allowing nearly equal sunlight to reach both hemispheres. Following the Spring Equinox, the Northern Hemisphere tilts closer to the Sun, leading to longer daylight hours and earlier sunrises.

In Hindu astrology, the Vernal Equinox is referred to as Vasant Sampat or Vasant Vishuva. The term "equinox" itself is derived from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night), symbolising the balance between day and night.
