New research on Sahelanthropus tchadensis fossils from Chad provides strong evidence that this 6.7–7.2 million-year-old hominin could walk upright. Analyses of a femur and forearm bones reveal human-like hip and knee adaptations, including a femoral tubercle and antetorsion, supporting bipedal locomotion. While retaining arboreal abilities, Sahelanthropus demonstrates that early bipedalism evolved gradually from a Pan-like ancestor. The findings, published in Science Advances, challenge previous assumptions and suggest that walking on two legs emerged much earlier in the human lineage than previously thought.

Craig, one of Africa’s most iconic super tuskers, died naturally in January 2026 in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park. Known for his sweeping tusks and calm nature, he symbolised conservation success. Studied since birth, Craig’s long life reflected effective anti-poaching efforts, while his passing highlights the fragility of Africa’s remaining giant elephants and the need for continued protection.
