<h3><strong>Here's what Nandan Nilekani said:</strong></h3>
Speaking at Infosys Investor AI Day, Nandan Nilekani addressed the worries around artificial intelligence's impact on IT services firms, which earlier sent the stocks to a tailspin. “In my view is there is <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/infosys-investor-ai-day-there-is-no-opportunity-gap-due-to-ai-says-nandan-nilekani-13831604.html">no opportunity gap</a>. AI is fundamentally good for companies like Infosys. So, don't get distracted by that,” he said.

He added that the opportunity is bigger than ever before. It is about productivity out of those tools, according to the Infosys Chairman. “When we train people, they have to learn to do this without tools. If you start by teaching them tools then everything is a black box, So, first principle thinking is very important. Talent transformation is huge. You will need talent such as QA testing or development. We have all kinds of new roles AI engineers, forward deployment engineers, AI leads, forensic analyst,” he further said.

Nilekani highlighted that AI poses an execution risk, not an opportunity risk. “Firms need to have their execution plan ready to scale and have new mindsets,” he explained.

He added that <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/artificial-intelligence/writing-code-will-no-longer-be-the-goal-as-ai-reshapes-tech-jobs-says-infosys-nandan-nilekani-article-13831670.html">writing code will no longer be the objective</a> for software technology professionals as artificial intelligence (AI) fundamentally changes how software is built and deployed. “Talent will have to deal with the world where writing code will not be the goal, it will be actually making AI work. So, the jobs will change and operating model (too),” he said.
<h3><strong>Here's what Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said:</strong></h3>
While announcing a strategic AI partnership with Infosys, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said there is a big gap between an AI model that works in a demo and one that works in a regulated industry – and if you want to close that gap, you need domain expertise. He added that Infosys has that kind of expertise across important industries: telecom, financial services, and manufacturing.

"Their developers are already using Claude Code to accelerate their work and to create AI agents for industries that demand precision, compliance, and deep domain knowledge," he added.

Infosys CEO Salil Parekh meanwhile said AI is not just transforming business – it is redefining the way industries operate and innovate. "Our collaboration with Anthropic marks a strategic leap toward advancing enterprise AI, enabling organizations to unlock value and become more intelligent, resilient, and responsible. From modernizing financial services with intelligent risk management and compliance, to enabling engineering businesses to lead with AI-driven design and manufacturing, the goal is to leverage the joint expertise of Infosys and Anthropic to accelerate AI value realization for global enterprises," he added.

These comments come after the IT stocks saw significant decline earlier this month amid concerns that artificial intelligence can intensify competition after Anthropic's launch of a legal AI tool for its Claude AI chatbot. Investors remained concerned that AI was creating more competition for software makers. IT index had lost 8.2 percent last week, its worst performance in 11 months.

It is currently down more than 64 percent from its IPO price of Rs 76 apiece, and around 83 percent lower than its all-time high of Rs 157.40 apiece which it had hit in August 2024 after debut.
<h3><strong>Ola Electric Q3 Results:</strong></h3>
Ola Electric on February 13 reported <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/earnings/ola-electric-q3-revenue-falls-55-yoy-to-rs-470-crore-net-loss-narrows-to-rs-487-crore-13827724.html">consolidated revenue from operations</a> at Rs 470 crore for Q3 FY26. This marks a 55 percent year-on-year (YoY) fall from the Rs 1,045 crore revenue from operations reported in the same period of the previous financial year.

Net loss however narrowed to Rs 487 crore during the quarter under review, as against a net loss of Rs 564 crore in the year-ago period.

Deliveries declined 61 percent YoY to 32,680 units in Q3 FY26, compared with 84,029 units a year earlier. Adjusted operating EBITDA loss narrowed 34.6 percent to Rs 323 crore.
<h3><strong>Citi on Ola Electric:</strong></h3>
Citi downgraded the shares of the company to ‘Sell’ from ‘Buy’, and slashed its target price by 51 percent to Rs 27 apiece from Rs 55 apiece earlier. The latest target price implies a downside potential of more than 6 percent from the stock’s previous closing price of Rs 28.83 apiece.

It cited slower-than-expected electric vehicle penetration, continued market-share losses, and mounting balance-sheet concerns amid persistent cash burn as reasons for the downgrade. Citi cut its estimates and target EV/sales multiple to 3.5x.
<h3><strong>Emkay Global on Ola Electric:</strong></h3>
Emkay Global downgraded the shares of Ola Electric to ‘Sell’ from ‘Buy’, and cut its target price to Rs 20 apiece from Rs 50 apiece. The latest target price implies a downside potential of around 31 percent from the stock’s previous closing price.

According to the brokerage note cited by CNBC-TV18, Emkay’s analysts highlighted that Ola logged a weak third quarter, although its underlying electric two-wheeler theme remains strong.

It added that the industry is witnessing a healthy growth, with a revival in penetration following a brief dip after the GST rat cuts. It noted that Ola saw consistent volume fall to 32,000 units in Q3 FY26, along with market share loss.

Emkay, as quoted by the report, said that this could be a difficult, long-drawn process for Ola, especially amid greater focus from incumbents and scale-up at Ather.
<h3><strong>Kotak Securities on Ola Electric:</strong></h3>
Kotak Securities also kept a ‘Sell’ call on the stock, with a target price of Rs 20 per share. The domestic brokerage said that Ola Electric’s results were below expectations, and volume growth saw no pick up.

It added that the company is already showing visible strain, and may see a full blown crisis ahead. It expects Ola to see big net losses and net worth erosion in FY26-FY28.

<h3><strong>Why are gold and silver prices falling today?</strong></h3>
The fall in gold and silver prices may have been driven by easing geopolitical tensions, which in turn may have dampened the sentiment for safe-haven assets like the precious metals. US President Donald Trump said yesterday that he would be involved "indirectly" in talks between Iran and the US over the former’s nuclear programme on Tuesday in Geneva, adding he believed Tehran wanted to make a deal.

On the other hand, representatives of Ukraine and Russia will meet in Geneva for a fresh round of US-mediated peace talks.

Gautam Shah, Founder of Goldilocks Global Research, told CNBC-TV18 that he sees major opportunity in global equities, but doesn’t expect any such thing in gold and silver. He expects the precious metals to get into volatile consolidation after the massive rally earlier this year.

“A combination of falling real interest rates, a weaker USD, and a clear shift toward monetary easing by major central banks could still see upward movement on silver prices. Industrial demand from solar, electronics, and electrification will also play a key element, but this is currently steady rather than explosive, and current inventories and recycling flows can cap price spikes,” said Ross Maxwell, Global Strategy Operations Lead, VT Markets.

Hindustan Zinc shares fall 2% as silver prices drop, precious metal ETFs down up to 3%

The shares of Hindustan Zinc declined nearly 2 percent on February 17 as silver prices dropped. Gold prices also fell, pushing the precious metal ETFs down in trade.

The shares of the Vedanta Group-company dropped to Rs 583.55 apiece in the morning trading hours of Tuesday. Hindustan Zinc is the largest producer of silver in India, and produces refined silver with a minimum 99.9 percent purity. Hence, the fall in the precious metals pushed the stock down.
Gold and silver prices fall:
Silver futures with March expiry on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) fell nearly 2 percent to Rs 2,35,142 per kilogram. The contracts with May expiry also fell around 2 percent.

Gold futures with April expiry meanwhile fell around 1 percent to Rs 1,53,522 per 10 grams. The contracts with June expiry also declined around 1 percent.
Gold and silver ETFs fall:

The shares of IT companies gained in trade on February 17, extending gains for the second consecutive session after a sharp decline. This came as heavyweight Infosys announced a strategic partnership with Anthropic, amid worries around AI-led disruption in the sector.

The <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/indian-indices/nifty-it-19.html">Nifty IT index</a> gained nearly 3 percent to 33,612.30, as seen at 11.35 am on Tuesday. <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/computers-software/infosys/IT">Infosys</a> shares gained more than 4 percent, while HCL Technologies, Wipro and Persistent Systems shares gained nearly 3 percent each.

Mphasis shares rose more than 2 percent, while Tata Consultancy Services (<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/computers-software/tataconsultancyservices/TCS">TCS</a>), Tech Mahindra, Coforge and LTI Mindtree shares rose around 2 percent each.
<h3><strong>Infosys and Anthropic announce partnership:</strong></h3>
The sharp rise in IT stocks comes today after Infosys announced a strategic collaboration with Anthropic to develop and deliver advanced enterprise AI solutions to companies across telecommunications, financial services, manufacturing, and software development.

As part of the partnership, the two companies will integrate Anthropic's Claude models, including Claude Code, with Infosys Topaz AI offerings. A dedicated Anthropic Center of Excellence to build and deploy AI agents tailored to industry-specific operations will also be launched.
<h3><strong>'Big gap between AI model in demo and what works in industry'</strong></h3>
“There's a big gap between an AI model that works in a demo and one that works in a regulated industry – and if you want to close that gap, you need domain expertise," said Dario Amodei, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, Anthropic. He added tha Infosys has that kind of expertise across important industries: telecom, financial services, and manufacturing.

"Their developers are already using Claude Code to accelerate their work and to create AI agents for industries that demand precision, compliance, and deep domain knowledge," he added.

Infosys CEO Salil Parekh meanwhile said AI is not just transforming business – it is redefining the way industries operate and innovate. "Our collaboration with Anthropic marks a strategic leap toward advancing enterprise AI, enabling organizations to unlock value and become more intelligent, resilient, and responsible. From modernizing financial services with intelligent risk management and compliance, to enabling engineering businesses to lead with AI-driven design and manufacturing, the goal is to leverage the joint expertise of Infosys and Anthropic to accelerate AI value realization for global enterprises," he added.

"The collaboration with Anthropic is a big game changer," said Dharmesh Kant, head of equity research at Cholamandalam Securities, adding that investors will watch out for any commentary from IT companies on ongoing AI disruption fears.
<h3><strong>Why IT stocks have been volatile recently?</strong></h3>
The sharp decline in IT stocks began earlier this month amid concerns that artificial intelligence can intensify competition after Anthropic's launch of a legal AI tool for its Claude AI chatbot. Investors remained concerned that AI was creating more competition for software makers. IT index had lost 8.2 percent last week, its worst performance in 11 months.

Vaqarjaved Khan, Senior Fundamental Analyst at Angel One, said that the weak sentiment was amplified by global tech sector weakness and rupee depreciation, exacerbating FPI outflows.

US job growth unexpectedly increased in January and the unemployment rate fell to 4.3 percent. These signs of labor market stability could give the Federal Reserve room to keep interest rates unchanged for some time while policymakers monitor inflation.

However, the sharp increase in payrolls was seen in the health sector. According to economists quoted by Reuters, job openings and other indicators pointed to a tepid labor market, adding that job growth remained concentrated in the healthcare and social services industries, which accounted for nearly all the rise in employment.
<h3><strong>Brokerages on IT:</strong></h3>
Nomura said that the valuations of these stocks are in the ‘value’ zone, after the strong correction. It noted that the earlier fall was driven by key concerns around AI-led ADM disruption, SaaS irrelevance and margin compression.

The international brokerage however sees these AI-led disruption fears as oversimplifying IT services role. It explained what can happen in the near future. In case of a structural decline, where revenue faces sustained deflation of 6-7 percent, growth could slow to 2-3 percent. The stocks’ P/E ratio in this scenario will remain in the range on 10-12x.

In case these companies succeed in pivoting towards data and AI-led services, growth can normalize, with P/E in early 20s, according to Normura. In the third and final case, these IT firms can become AI orchestrators, where they opt for outcome-based model, leading to higher multiples and margin nonlinearity.

Nomura noted that the IT sector is currently trading below its 12-year average, and at a 12–39 percent discount to its 5-year average. Infosys, Cognizant, Coforge and eClerx are its top picks in the sector.

In an earlier note titled 'India IT Services: Looking through the AI fog', JPMorgan's Asian Pacific Equity Research team argued that artificial intelligence will create new areas of work, instead of simply shrinking the opportunities for IT vendors.

"IT firms remain the plumbers of the technology world…However, it's overly simplistic to assume that AI can automatically generate enterprise grade software and replace the value IT Services firms create across the cycle," it added.

Ravi Menon, Lead Analyst at Macquarie Group, meanwhile said that people underestimate the demand elasticity in technology. He said that AI won't change much as the cost of coding has always been dropping.

"Back in 2012-13, when the 'Low code no code' tools started emerging, this was a concern. But that actually became the fastest growing practices for Indian IT services firms over the time. So I don't think the new AI tools are any cause of concern for people. Firms should adapt to these tools, and change the business model a little to price a lot more on the outcome," he said while speaking to CNBC-TV18.

He added that the latest AI inventions don’t seem to be anything that is significantly disruptive. The recent fall in IT stocks is led by fear more than fundamentals, and the disruption worries are likely overdone, he further said.

According to Menon, this is the phase where investors should start buying fairly aggressively. However, he said that some of the large-caps may see 10 percent downside in the worst-case scenario. He added that demand trends are improving, and guidance in April could trigger a PE rerating in IT stocks.
