Amid weak global cues, Indian indices opened lower, with the Nifty hovering around 25,600. Extended selling dragged it below 25,500 intraday, before a mid-session recovery and strong final-hour buying helped the market close near the day’s high.

At close, the Sensex was up 266.47 points or 0.32 percent at 83,580.40, and the Nifty was up 50.90 points or 0.20 percent at 25,693.70.

For the week, BSE Sensex and Nifty added 1.5% each.

Broader markets showed a mixed performance, with the Nifty Midcap index ending flat, while the Smallcap index slipped 0.3 percent.

The index has been consolidating over the last few sessions. On the lower end, support is placed at 25,500, while on the higher end, resistance is seen around 25,700. In the short term, the index is likely to remain range-bound between 25,500 and 25,700. A decisive breakout on either side of this range could trigger a directional move.

Nifty opened on a weak note and slipped to an intraday low of 25,492 before staging a smart rebound toward the 25,630–25,660 zone. Selling pressure emerged near this resistance zone, leading the index to surrender most of its gains. However, a sharp late-session recovery helped Nifty close at 25,694, up 0.20% for the day. On the daily chart, Nifty has formed a small bodied candle with a relatively long lower wick, highlighting buying interest at lower levels.

Going ahead, the immediate resistance for Nifty is placed in the 25,750–25,800 zone. A decisive breakout and a strong follow through above this zone could result in Nifty extending its pullback towards 26,000, followed by 26,200 in the short term. On the downside, the zone of 25,550–25,500 zone is likely to act as an immediate support.

Helped by fag-end buying, the Sensex advanced 266.47 points or 0.32 percent to settle at 83,580.40. From the day's low of 82,925.35, the benchmark jumped 655.05 points at the end of trade. The Nifty climbed 50.90 points or 0.2 percent to end at 25,693.70 in a volatile session.

On the sectoral front, Nifty FMCG ended the day as the top gainer with gains of 2.27 percent, followed by Nifty Realty. On the other hand, Nifty IT continued to drift lower for the third consecutive day, ending the day 1.47% lower, followed by Nifty Pharma. Nifty IT is down 7 percent in last three sessions of selling in the sector.

"The midcap index rebounded sharply from its 20-day EMA and formed a doji candle with long lower shadow on the daily chart, signalling supportive buying near key moving average support. The Smallcap index faced early session pressure but recovered strongly from the lows, resulting in a dragonfly doji-like candle formation, a sign of intraday rejection of lower levels. The advance-decline ratio was however, skewed in the favour of bears at day’s close. A total of 294 stocks out of the Nifty 500 universe ended in the red," Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities said.

Market volatility remained elevated during the week, with the Nifty recording its widest trading range since the announcement of the Lok Sabha election results in June 2024.

"While the Budget led to a temporary dip in markets due to the proposed derivatives tax hike and the Reserve Bank of India largely stayed on script, the U.S.–India trade deal came completely out of the blue," said Aishvarya Dadheech, founder and chief investment officer at Fident Asset Management. "The agreement caught markets off guard in a positive way and helped remove a major overhang," she added.

2) Value buying at lower levels: Value buying was seen after the market’s initial decline. Buying interest was seen in select FMCG, oil and gas and private banking stocks after recent corrections.

On Thursday, the Sensex had dropped 503.76 points, or 0.6 percent, to settle at 83,313.93. The Nifty declined 133.20 points, or 0.52 percent, to end at 25,642.80.

Extending losses from the previous session, the Sensex declined 343.43 points or 0.41 percent to 82,970.50, while the broader Nifty slipped to 25,511.40, down 131.40 points or 0.51 percent, at around 10:15 am.

All the major sectors traded lower, with IT and pharma among the key laggards. The broader Nifty small-cap100 and Nifty mid-cap100 fell 1.28 percent and 0.78 percent, respectively.  Market breadth was negative as about 1125 shares advanced, 2185 shares declined, and 163 shares unchanged.
<h3>Key factors behind market decline</h3>
1) RBI policy remains unchanged: After a 25 basis point rate cut in December, the RBI on Friday decided to pause on the policy rate front amid geopolitical uncertainties. This is the first monetary policy review after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Budget for financial year 2026-27. Announcing the sixth and final bi-monthly monetary policy for the current fiscal, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided to retain short-term lending rate or repo rate at 5.25 per cent with a neutral stance. By holding the repo rate at 5.25 percent, the RBI signals caution, which dampens expectations of easy liquidity flowing into equities and other risk assets.

"The decision reflects RBI's cautious approach amid mixed inflation signals, global uncertainties, currency volatility, even as recent trade deals with the U.S. and European Union have boosted export prospects," Abhishek Goenka, founder and chief investment officer of wealth platform Billionz told Reuters.

2) FII outflows: The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 2,150.51 crore on Thursday. FIIs turned net sellers after buying for two consecutive sessions in February.

"FIIs again turning sellers in India and increasing their short positions in the derivative markets indicates further weakness in the market in the near-term," VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd, said.

3) Weak global cues: Asian markets traded lower, with South Korea’s Kospi and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index in the red. US markets ended sharply lower on Thursday, with the Nasdaq Composite tumbling 1.59 percent, the S&amp;P 500 declining 1.23 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 1.2 percent.

"Global equity markets are trading with a pronounced risk-off bias following sharp losses in the overnight US session. Weakness in global technology stocks and commodities continues to weigh on sentiment, with selling pressure extending into Asian markets," Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, told PTI.

Mphasis and Tech Mahindra dropped more than 2 percent each. Heavyweights Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys were down nearly 2 percent each, while Wipro and HCLTech slipped around 1 percent each.

Ponmudi R added that the ongoing correction in global technology stocks reflected stretched valuations, rising AI-related cost concerns and muted investor response to recent earnings and outlooks.

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd, said the Nifty had been expected to move lower towards the 25,440 level. "While this move did not fully materialise, it is still in play. However, a direct rise past 25,700 could ease bearish sentiment and open the way for a move towards 25,830–26,020," he said.

On Thursday, the Sensex had fallen 503.76 points, or 0.6 percent, to settle at 83,313.93. The Nifty had dropped 133.20 points, or 0.52 percent, at 25,642.80.

The benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty continued to slide for the second straight session on Friday, weighed down by heavy selling in IT shares amid weak global cues.

Extending losses from the previous session, the Sensex declined 343.43 points or 0.41 percent to 82,970.50, while the broader Nifty slipped to 25,511.40, down 131.40 points or 0.51 percent, at around 10:15 am.

All the major sectors traded lower, with IT and pharma among the key laggards. The broader Nifty small-cap100 and Nifty mid-cap100 fell 1.28 percent and 0.78 percent, respectively.  Market breadth was negative as about 1125 shares advanced, 2185 shares declined, and 163 shares unchanged.
Key factors behind market decline
1) RBI policy remains unchanged: After a 25 basis point rate cut in December, the RBI on Friday decided to pause on the policy rate front amid geopolitical uncertainties. This is the first monetary policy review after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the Budget for financial year 2026-27. Announcing the sixth and final bi-monthly monetary policy for the current fiscal, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided to retain short-term lending rate or repo rate at 5.25 per cent with a neutral stance. By holding the repo rate at 5.25 percent, the RBI signals caution, which dampens expectations of easy liquidity flowing into equities and other risk assets.

&quot;The decision reflects RBI's cautious approach amid mixed inflation signals, global uncertainties, currency volatility, even as recent trade deals with the U.S. and European Union have boosted export prospects,&quot; Abhishek Goenka, founder and chief investment officer of wealth platform Billionz told Reuters.

2) FII outflows: The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 2,150.51 crore on Thursday. FIIs turned net sellers after buying for two consecutive sessions in February.

&quot;FIIs again turning sellers in India and increasing their short positions in the derivative markets indicates further weakness in the market in the near-term,&quot; VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Ltd, said.

3) Weak global cues: Asian markets traded lower, with South Korea’s Kospi and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index in the red. US markets ended sharply lower on Thursday, with the Nasdaq Composite tumbling 1.59 percent, the S&amp;amp;P 500 declining 1.23 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 1.2 percent.

&quot;Global equity markets are trading with a pronounced risk-off bias following sharp losses in the overnight US session. Weakness in global technology stocks and commodities continues to weigh on sentiment, with selling pressure extending into Asian markets,&quot; Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, told PTI.

4) Crude oil prices: Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.37 percent to USD 67.71 per barrel. Higher crude prices tend to increase inflationary pressures and widen India’s trade deficit, impacting market sentiment.

5) IT stocks under pressure: IT shares extended losses for the third consecutive session, dragging the broader market lower. The Nifty IT index fell around 3 percent on Friday and has declined nearly 9 percent since the launch of a new legal AI tool by Anthropic.
