At around 10:40 a.m., the Sensex climbed 337.50 points or 0.4 percent to 85,526.10, while the broader Nifty rose to 26,246.50, up 99.95 points or 0.38 percent.

4) Rupee rises: In the currency market, the rupee traded in a narrow range in the morning session and appreciated by 6 paise to 89.92 against the US dollar. Forex traders said the USD/INR pair is expected to remain range-bound as the 90 level is being protected by the Reserve Bank of India, even as positive domestic equities were offset by sustained foreign fund outflows.

5) Buying in auto shares: Auto shares extended their gains as companies began releasing their December sales numbers. The Nifty Auto index rose nearly 1 percent, marking its fourth straight session of gains.

VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, said "The impressive 25.8 % YoY increase in passenger vehicles sales in December bodes well for the auto industry. More importantly, this data confirms the growth momentum in the economy. It has to be watched whether this growth sustains, albeit at a slower pace, going forward. This creates operating leverage as credit growth sustains in the low-to-mid teens. Also, the valuations are comfortable from entry point of view. Despite strong fundamentals, BFSI is trading at a discount to the broader market on P/B, especially banks.

We believe, this combination of earnings visibility plus reasonable valuations is rare. Finally, structural financialisation is a long runway theme—MF AUM, insurance penetration, demat accounts and digital payments are all compounding faster than GDP.

We are at a very different point in the financial cycle. Indian bank balance sheets are the cleanest in decades—NPAs are at cycle lows, capital adequacy is strong, and ROEs are structurally higher. This creates operating leverage as credit growth sustains in the low-to-mid teens. Also, the valuations are comfortable from entry point of view. Despite strong fundamentals, BFSI is trading at a discount to the broader market on P/B, especially banks.

We believe, this combination of earnings visibility plus reasonable valuations is rare. Finally, structural financialisation is a long runway theme—MF AUM, insurance penetration, demat accounts and digital payments are all compounding faster than GDP.
