Indian markets began the March series on a firm footing, with the Nifty opening above 25,500 and trading in positive territory for most of the session, touching an intraday high of 25,652.60. At close, the Sensex was up 50.15 points or 0.06 percent at 82,276.07, and the Nifty was up 57.85 points or 0.23 percent at 25,482.50.

Broader indices outperformed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap index gaining 0.5% and the Smallcap index rising 1%.

On the sectoral front, auto, healthcare, IT, metal, pharma up 1-2 percent, while telecom index down 1%, FMCG, PSU Bank down 0.4% each.

Nifty opened with a gap-up and extended gains to an intraday high of 25,653. However, selling pressure at higher levels dragged the index lower, leading to a fill of the morning intraday gap. The index eventually closed at 25,483, up 0.23%. On the daily chart, Nifty has formed a small-bodied candle with a long upper shadow, indicating supply emerging at higher levels. Notably, the selling pressure was seen around the 50-day EMA.

Going ahead, the immediate support for Nifty is placed in the 25400–25350 zone. Strong rebound was seen from this zone on the previous two occasions. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Nifty filling the gap and extending its weakness towards 25150, followed by 24950 in the short term. On the upside, the zone of 25600–25650 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance.

Today, the benchmark indices witnessed a volatile trading session. After a roller-coaster activity, the Nifty ended 58 points higher, while the Sensex was up by 50 points. Among sectors, the Metal Index outperformed, rallying 2.60 percent. Technically, the market opened on a strong note, but after an intraday rally, it again witnessed profit booking at higher levels, which is largely negative.

We are of the view that the 20-day SMA (Simple Moving Average) or 25,600/82500 will act as an immediate resistance zone for day traders. As long as the market trades below this level, the weak sentiment is likely to continue on the downside, with a potential slip toward the 200-day SMA or 25,350-25,300/82000-81800. Conversely, if the market moves above the 20-day SMA or 25,600/82500, the pullback could extend toward 25,750-25,800/82800-83000.

Sensex closed 50.15 points or 0.06% higher at 82,276.07, and the Nifty climbed 57.85 points or 0.23% at 25,482.50. About 1,966 shares advanced, 2,064 shares declined, and 161 shares were unchanged. Sensex fell nearly 700  points from day's high while Nifty ended below the psychologically important 25,500-mark. Sensex touched intraday high of 82,957.91 while that of Nifty was 25,652.6.

Eleven of the 16 major sectors logged gains. The broader small-caps and mid-caps rose 0.9% and 0.6%, respectively.

Metals gained 2.7%, led by Tata Steel, JSW Steel and Jindal Steel on price-target hikes by CLSA, citing gains from the recent imposition of a safeguard duty and the rise in steel prices.

The IT index advanced 1.6% after a 4.7% fall a day earlier. Rapid developments in AI are spurring questions about the long-term outlook for India's IT sector, even as executives frame disruption as an opportunity.

"While IT companies' valuations have turned attractive after the recent drop, investors will stay cautious because AI's impact on earnings growth and margins remains uncertain," Amnish Aggarwal, director of institutional research at PL Capital told Reuters.

Solar energy companies--Waaree Energies and Premier Energies--closed over 10% and 6% lower, respectively, to be the worst performers in the Nifty 200 and Nifty 500 indices.

Bank Nifty fell 0.7% from day's high while Nifty IT fell 1% from intraday high of over 2%.

2. FII selling resumes

FII selling resumed on February 24 with institutional activity on February 24 showing Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) as net sellers, with equity outflows of Rs 102 crore, whereas Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) provided strong market support through net purchases of ₹3,161 crore.

3. Technical level

Nifty failing to rise above 25,670 could be a reason for sell on rise being seen in markets.

"We will look for consistent trades above 25.670 to confirm strength, aiming 25.900 initially. But, inability to float above 25530 could signal lack of upside momentum," said Anand James, Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.

"We are of the view that the intraday market texture is weak, but a fresh selloff is possible only after the market breaches the 200-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) or 25,300/82,000. If the market manages to trade above this level, it could bounce back to 25,500-25,650/82,500-82,800. Conversely, if it falls below 25,300/82,000, it could slip to 25,150-25,050/81,400-81,200. The current market texture is volatile; hence, level-based trading would be the ideal strategy for day traders," said Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities.

"If the weakness in IT stocks subsides and the segment recovers, the tailwind of FII buying can lift the markets," he added.

2) Positive global cues: Global technology stocks rallied overnight, with the Nasdaq 100 rising over 1 percent after recent volatility linked to concerns over AI-led disruption. Sentiment improved following reports that Anthropic plans to build partnerships around its Claude technology.

Asian markets also opened higher on Wednesday, with gains in Japan, South Korea and Australia supporting investor sentiment.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 90.94 against the dollar before rising to 90.89, up 6 paise from its previous close. However, a sharp rise in global crude oil prices and FII outflows capped further gains, forex traders said.

On Tuesday, the Sensex had plunged 1,068.74 points or 1.28 percent to settle at 82,225.92, while the Nifty declined 288.35 points or 1.12 percent to close at 25,424.65.
<h3>Technical outlook</h3>
"Although a short-term pullback cannot be ruled out, it is unlikely for the benchmark Nifty to sustain at higher levels with 25,200 and 25,800 levels acting as immediate support and resistance," said Nilesh Jain, vice president and head of technical and derivatives research at Centrum Finverse.

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, said that while a collapse was ruled out, 25,300 had been pencilled in as the lower range.

"This being intact despite falls; an upswing appears as the likely play for today. We will look for consistent trades above 25,670 to confirm strength, aiming 25,900 initially. But inability to float above 25,530 could signal lack of upside momentum,” he said.

3) Decline in volatility: The India VIX declined more than 6 percent to 13.22. A lower VIX indicates easing volatility expectations, which generally supports risk appetite in equities.

4) Rupee rises: The rupee appreciated 6 paise to 90.89 against the US dollar, aided by a weaker greenback and firm domestic equities.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 90.94 against the dollar before rising to 90.89, up 6 paise from its previous close. However, a sharp rise in global crude oil prices and FII outflows capped further gains, forex traders said.

On Tuesday, the Sensex had plunged 1,068.74 points or 1.28 percent to settle at 82,225.92, while the Nifty declined 288.35 points or 1.12 percent to close at 25,424.65.
Technical outlook
&quot;Although a short-term pullback cannot be ruled out, it is unlikely for the benchmark Nifty to sustain at higher levels with 25,200 and 25,800 levels acting as immediate support and resistance,&quot; said Nilesh Jain, vice president and head of technical and derivatives research at Centrum Finverse.

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, said that while a collapse was ruled out, 25,300 had been pencilled in as the lower range.

&quot;This being intact despite falls; an upswing appears as the likely play for today. We will look for consistent trades above 25,670 to confirm strength, aiming 25,900 initially. But inability to float above 25,530 could signal lack of upside momentum,” he said.
