US stocks jumped on Monday with finance and technology shares providing much of the upside muscle, as upbeat quarterly earnings results revived risk appetite and investors grew less fearful about regional bank credit quality.

A broad rally sent all three major U.S. stock indexes to a sharply higher close. The small cap Russell 2000 (.RUT), opens new tab outperformed its larger counterparts, rising 2.0%.

"It's a good, solid, across-the-board move, there's not a lot of negative in the market," said Paul Nolte, senior wealth advisor &amp; market strategist at Murphy &amp; Sylvest in Elmhurst, Illinois. "There’s some relief from the financials ... investors are looking at it as maybe a bit of an overreaction on the downside last week."

"As far as the market’s concerned, everything is wonderful again."

Apple stock touched a record high, while Meta, Netflix and Alphabet gained between 1.3% and 3.3%.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index breached an all-time high, ending the session up 1.6%.

Third quarter earnings season has shifted into high gear. Notable results this week include Tesla, Netflix, IBM, Intel, GM and Ford, along with a spate of other high-profile industrial firms, including aerospace, transports and diversified manufacturers.

Upcoming U.S. regional bank results are expected to provide a closer read of the sector on the heels of last week's selloff, which was driven by fears of systemic credit stress.
Analysts currently expect third-quarter S&amp;P 500 earnings growth, on aggregate, of 9.3% year-on-year, marking an improvement over their 8.8% growth estimate as of October 1.

"A lot of the uncertainty that the businesses were concerned about -- tax legislation, the tariffs -- earlier this year has subsided for the time being, and that's allowed companies to focus on earnings and profitability," said Matthew Keator, managing partner in the Keator Group, a wealth management firm in Lenox, Massachusetts.

With the federal shutdown entering day 20, investors and policymakers have had to feel their way forward amid the resulting data blackout. But on Friday the Labor Department will make an exception by releasing its September consumer price index (CPI), which will provide the data dependent U.S. Federal Reserve with a glimpse at the state of inflation and perhaps an indication regarding the extent to which President Donald Trump's tariffs are affecting price growth.

In the ongoing trade skirmish between Washington and Beijing, Trump suggested easing tariffs on China if Beijing resumes key agricultural purchases including soybeans. Trump blamed the latest showdown on China's rare earth export controls.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 515.97 points, or 1.12%, to 46,706.58, the S&amp;P 500 gained 71.12 points, or 1.07%, to 6,735.13 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 310.57 points, or 1.37%, to 22,990.54.

Of the 11 major sectors in the S&amp;P 500, communication services (.SPLRCL), opens new tab enjoyed the largest percentage gain, while consumer staples and utilities (.SPLRCU), opens new tab inched lower.

Trump said his proposed 100% tariff on goods from China would not be sustainable, but blamed Beijing for the latest impasse in trade talks that began with Chinese authorities tightening control over rare earth exports. Trump unveiled the new tariffs a week ago, along with new export controls on "any and all critical software," to go into effect on November 1.

"The market doesn't really know what to take when Donald Trump speaks," said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth. "There's just a lot of back-and-forth comments with regards to China and trade tariffs and pretty much everything else."

Regional bank stocks rebounded following a selloff on Thursday, when Zions Bancorporation disclosed losses tied to two commercial and industrial loans and Western Alliance revealed it had initiated a lawsuit alleging fraud by Cantor Group V, LLC.

"There's a lot more bark than bite on the credit fears," said Jed Ellerbroek, a portfolio manager at Argent Capital. "Looking through all the big banks' results, credit is very good. Overall, there are very few pockets of weakness."

Truist Financial gained 3.7% after the bank reported higher third-quarter profit. Fifth Third Bancorp rose 1.3%, Zions shares rebounded from losses the day before to close 5.8% higher, and Western Alliance advanced 3.1%.

The S&amp;P Composite 1500 Regional Banks index climbed 1.8% after tumbling almost 6% the day before.

The S&amp;P 500 financial sector index, which includes the largest U.S. banks, rose 0.8%.

"It certainly feels like momentum is on the side of investors over the last few days," said Mona Mahajan, head of investment strategy at Edward Jones.

It seems like "the market probability of a Fed rate cut has actually gone up since the shutdown began," she said. "Maybe that's because there's the potential impact on the economy or some weaker jobs data this week or this morning's ISM data... the expectation is we're still in this environment where the Fed is going to cut rates."

The Fed cut rates in September for the first time since December amid recent labor market weakness. On Wednesday, a report showed a decline in private payrolls of 32,000 and a downwardly revised 3,000 decline in August.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 238.56 points, or 0.51%, to 46,758.28, the S&amp;P 500 gained 0.44 points, or 0.01%, to 6,715.79 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 63.54 points, or 0.28%, to 22,780.51.

For the week, the Dow gained 1.1%, the S&amp;P 500 also climbed 1.1% and the Nasdaq rose 1.3%.

The market has historically shrugged off government shutdowns, but some strategists said that a longer shutdown could create more uncertainty for investors and for Fed policymakers.

"The market generally looks past government shutdowns because they don't usually last long and they don't have a longer-term negative impact on the economy," said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial in Troy, Michigan.

"But the longer it goes... it means the data collection for really important reports could get delayed, or it could cloud some of the data that we will eventually get because the data collection wasn't happening over an extended period."

Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said he was hesitant to commit to a series of rate cuts with inflation still running above the target.

According to the CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, traders see a 25-basis-point cut at the Fed's October meeting as almost certain and are pricing in an 84% probability of an additional cut in December.

Shares of USA Rare Earth rose 14.3% after CEO Barbara Humpton told CNBC the company was "in close communication" with the White House.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.72-to-1 ratio on the NYSE. There were 686 new highs and 55 new lows on the NYSE.

On the Nasdaq, 2,813 stocks rose and 1,880 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.5-to-1 ratio.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 20.47 billion shares, compared with the 19.01 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

ADP showed a decline in private payrolls of 32,000 and a downwardly revised 3,000 decline in August. These numbers were weaker than economist forecasts for growth of 50,000 in September and the prior report of a 54,000 advance in August.

Elsewhere in economic data, the Institute for Supply Management showed U.S. manufacturing edged toward recovery in September.

After opening lower, all three main U.S. indexes advanced. Among the S&amp;P 500's 11 major industry sectors, the biggest gainer was S&amp;P 500 healthcare (.SPXHC), opens new tab, boosted by pharmaceutical companies.

The healthcare rally started in earnest on Tuesday after Pfizer (PFE.N), opens new tab and U.S. President Donald Trump said they had cut a deal. The drugmaker agreed to lower prescription drug prices in the Medicaid program - compared to its charges in other developed countries - in exchange for tariff relief. Trump said he expected more drug companies to follow suit.

"Yesterday was the catalyst for healthcare," said Lara Castleton, U.S. head of portfolio construction and strategy at Janus Henderson Investors, adding that the sector was probably ripe for a rally after underperforming the rest of the market so far this year.

"People have not necessarily been avoiding it, but they have not been as heavily allocated into healthcare as they have been in technology and all the AI hype," she said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 43.21 points, or 0.09%, to 46,441.10, the S&amp;P 500 gained 22.74 points, or 0.34%, to 6,711.20 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 95.15 points, or 0.42%, to 22,755.16.

The S&amp;P 500 tech sector provided the second biggest boost for the benchmark index, with Micron rallying 8.9% and the broader Philadelphia chip index adding 2%.

The sector with the biggest percentage decline during the session was materials, which ended the day down more than 1%.

The healthcare sector's biggest gainers were Biogen, up 10.9% and Thermo Fisher, up 9.4%.

Castleton noted that equity investors appeared to be shrugging off uncertainties around the shutdown. Markets have historically been resilient during government closures.

The S&amp;P 500 rose during each of the last six shutdowns, according to a note from Deutsche Bank. During the last government closure between the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, indexes were able to advance.

In individual stocks, a 16.8% rally in shares of AES made it the biggest gainer in the benchmark index and a strong boost for the S&amp;P 500 utilities sector. This was after the Financial Times reported that BlackRock-owned Global Infrastructure Partners was nearing a $38-billion deal to acquire the utility group.

While the materials sector was broadly weaker, Lithium Americas Corp U.S. shares rallied 23.3% and rival Albemarle closed up 4.2%. The U.S. Department of Energy has taken a 5% stake in Lithium Americas and a separate 5% stake in the company's joint venture with General Motors Corteva, said it would separate its seed and pesticide businesses into separate publicly traded companies, sending its shares down 9%.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.92-to-1 ratio on the NYSE where there were 580 new highs and 99 new lows.

On the Nasdaq, 2,707 stocks rose and 2,003 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.35-to-1 ratio.

The S&amp;P 500 posted 37 new 52-week highs and 7 new lows while the Nasdaq Composite recorded 111 new highs and 68 new lows.

Volume wise, on U.S. exchanges 19.79 billion shares changed hands compared with the 20-day moving average of 18.62 billion.
