The shares of <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/auto-ancillaries/shanthigears/SG04">Shanthi Gears</a> dropped more than 6 percent to hit a three-month low of Rs 493.65 apiece on October 24. This came after the company released its results for the July-September quarter of the financial year 2026.

Shanthi Gears on Friday reported a net profit of Rs 21.5 crore for the second quarter of the ongoing FY26. This marks a 16 percent year-on-year (YoY) fall from the Rs 25.63 crore net profit reported in the corresponding quarter of FY25.

The firm's revenue from operations meanwhile fell nearly 15 percent YoY to Rs 132 crore in Q2 FY26, from Rs 155 crore in Q2 FY25. Earnings per share (EPS) also reduced to Rs 2.80 during the quarter under review, from Rs 3.34 in the same period last year.

Shanthi Gears said its booked orders during the quarter rose 7 percent to Rs 138 crore. Unexecuted order book as on September 30 stood at Rs 254 crore. It achieved return on average invested capital (ROIC) of 46 percent in Q2 FY26, and generated free cash flow of Rs 12.68 crore during the period.

Elara Capital has maintained <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/lifehealth-insurance/sbilifeinsurancecompany/SLI03">SBI Life</a> as its preferred pick in the life insurance space.

Emkay Global said annual premium equivalent (APE) growth could remain muted at around 4 percent in Q2 due to festive season-related impact and slower momentum in unit-linked insurance plans. Even so, the firm expects healthy VNB margins driven by a higher contribution from non-par products.

Both Emkay Global and Prabhudas Lilladher anticipate limited impact from goods and services tax-related changes, citing SBI Life’s cost advantage.

According to market data, the stock carries an average “buy” rating from 33 analysts, with a median price target of Rs 2,140.

'Trend deciding level for the day is 58,202'

The index had hit all-time high levels buoyed by better-than-expected Q2 results by some of the major players. Axis Securities had said that the trend deciding level for the day is 58,202. "If Bank Nifty trades above this level, it may rally up to 58,453-58,828-59,079 levels. However, if it trades below 58,202 levels, we may witness profit booking in the market, and the index may correct up to 57,827-57,576-57,201 levels," it said.

As the index has now dropped below the trend deciding level as well as the first support zone, the next key levels to watch out for are 57,576 and 57,201, according to Axis Securities.

PL Capital said that the near-term support at the previous consolidation zone was seen at the 57,300 level, which needs to be sustained. “On the upside, we can expect the next targets of the 59,700 and 60,500 levels in the coming days,” it added.

'Sustained move above 58,400 could open the door for a further rally'

"The index is likely to trade sideways to positive, with strong support between 57,700–57,900 and resistance at 58,200–58,400. A sustained move above 58,400 could open the door for a further rally, while a break below 57,830 may invite mild profit booking," said Choice Broking.

Nifty Private Bank index is down more than 0.8 percent, while Nifty PSU Bank index is down 0.74 percent.

Trump-Xi meeting:

Global metal prices rallied after the White House confirmed on October 23 that US President <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/world/trump-to-meet-xi-in-south-korea-as-part-of-asia-swing-white-house-article-13629590.html">Donald Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping</a> in South Korea on October 30 as part of the former's trip to Asia. This came amid concerns following escalating trade tensions after Trump announced that he will hike tariffs on Chinese imports to a whopping 155 percent.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump will depart for Malaysia late on Friday night and will also visit Japan and South Korea, after addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit.

The expectations of cooling trade tensions between the two countries may have boosted the metal stocks.

Metal prices soar on supply concerns:

Aluminium prices on the London Metals Exchange (LME) crossed the $2,850 per tonne-mark today due to the tight supply and demand dynamics globally, and due to expectations of monetary easing around the world. Additionally, a smelter in Iceland is temporarily shutting down production following an equipment failure, which would likely affect production worth 100 kt. Copper prices also rose around 2 percent on LME today.

US Fed rate cut hopes:

The sharp rise also comes amid hopes for more rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. The American central bank is expected to lower the interest rate by a quarter point to 3.75-4 percent on October 29, according to a Reuters poll. The majority expect another cut in December.

More rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve are likely provide a boost to non-yielding assets. "The primary growth in metal prices have been driven by aluminium producers. With higher aluminium prices, the steel stocks have comparatively underperformed since steel prices have softened. The expected Fed rate cut and domestic demand is also helping improve quarterly performance," said Shravan Shetty, Managing Director at Primus Partners.

China's new five-year plan:

China has vowed to increase technological self-reliance and grow the domestic market in the next five years, as it looks to both insulate the economy from foreign pressures and build a sustainable engine for growth.

The country targets to "greatly increase" the capacity for self-reliance and strength in science and technology, according to a communique released on Thursday after a four-day conclave of the Communist Party’s Central Committee. It will also seek to maintain manufacturing’s share in the economy at a “reasonable” level as part of efforts to build a modern industrial system. These development may have also boosted investor sentiment for metal stocks.

Top metal gainers:

Hindalco Industries shares gained more than 4 percent, while National Aluminium Company (<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/aluminium/nationalaluminiumcompany/NAC">NALCO</a>) and <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/metals-non-ferrous/hindustancopper/HC07">Hindustan Copper</a> shares gained more than 3 percent each. Vedanta shares were up over 2 percent.

Earlier during the day, Hindalco shares hit a 52-week high of Rs 826.50 apiece. This comes after its subsidiary Novelis said that its fire-damaged plant in Oswego will restart by December-end, earlier than expected.

Bucking the trend, APL Apollo Tubes, Welspun Corp and <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/trading/adanienterprises/AE13">Adani Enterprises</a> shares were trading in the red.

"Metal stocks displayed notable resilience on a volatile market day, with the Nifty Metal Index touching a fresh record high of 10,457.40...The sector’s strength can be attributed to a confluence of supportive global and sector-specific developments. Aluminium prices surged to a multi-year high of around $2,860 per tonne on LME amid supply disruptions, following the temporary shutdown of a major smelter in Iceland, which is estimated to curtail production by nearly 100,000 tonnes due to equipment failure. This supply-side constraint, coupled with ongoing firmness in industrial metal demand, boosted sentiment across aluminium-linked counters," said Puneet Singhania, Director at Master Trust Group.

"Additionally, improved geopolitical tone ahead of the scheduled US-China trade discussions on October 30 in South Korea, along with growing market expectations of an upcoming US Federal Reserve rate cut, lent further support to the broader metal pack. In the near term, the outlook for metal stocks—particularly aluminium and copper-focused companies—remains constructive. We view any interim corrections as healthy and believe they present opportunities to accumulate quality names with long-term growth potential," he added.

More rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve are likely provide a boost to non-yielding assets. &quot;The primary growth in metal prices have been driven by aluminium producers. With higher aluminium prices, the steel stocks have comparatively underperformed since steel prices have softened. The expected Fed rate cut and domestic demand is also helping improve quarterly performance,&quot; said Shravan Shetty, Managing Director at Primus Partners.

China's new five-year plan:

China has vowed to increase technological self-reliance and grow the domestic market in the next five years, as it looks to both insulate the economy from foreign pressures and build a sustainable engine for growth.

The country targets to &quot;greatly increase&quot; the capacity for self-reliance and strength in science and technology, according to a communique released on Thursday after a four-day conclave of the Communist Party’s Central Committee. It will also seek to maintain manufacturing’s share in the economy at a “reasonable” level as part of efforts to build a modern industrial system. These development may have also boosted investor sentiment for metal stocks.

Top metal gainers:

Hindalco Industries shares gained more than 4 percent, while National Aluminium Company (NALCO) and Hindustan Copper shares gained more than 3 percent each. Vedanta shares were up over 2 percent.

Earlier during the day, Hindalco shares hit a 52-week high of Rs 826.50 apiece. This comes after its subsidiary Novelis said that its fire-damaged plant in Oswego will restart by December-end, earlier than expected.

Hindustan Zinc shares gained around 1.4 percent, while Jindal Stainless Steel, Steel Authority of India (SAIL), Tata Steel and JSW Steel shares were trading in the green with marginal gains.

Bucking the trend, APL Apollo Tubes, Welspun Corp and Adani Enterprises shares were trading in the red.

&quot;Metal stocks displayed notable resilience on a volatile market day, with the Nifty Metal Index touching a fresh record high of 10,457.40...The sector’s strength can be attributed to a confluence of supportive global and sector-specific developments. Aluminium prices surged to a multi-year high of around $2,860 per tonne on LME amid supply disruptions, following the temporary shutdown of a major smelter in Iceland, which is estimated to curtail production by nearly 100,000 tonnes due to equipment failure. This supply-side constraint, coupled with ongoing firmness in industrial metal demand, boosted sentiment across aluminium-linked counters,&quot; said Puneet Singhania, Director at Master Trust Group.

&quot;Additionally, improved geopolitical tone ahead of the scheduled US-China trade discussions on October 30 in South Korea, along with growing market expectations of an upcoming US Federal Reserve rate cut, lent further support to the broader metal pack. In the near term, the outlook for metal stocks—particularly aluminium and copper-focused companies—remains constructive. We view any interim corrections as healthy and believe they present opportunities to accumulate quality names with long-term growth potential,&quot; he added.
