The shares of auto companies rose in trade on January 1 as some of the automakers began releasing their December sales reports.

The rise in the auto stocks pushed the <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/indian-indices/nifty-auto-52.html">Nifty Auto index</a> up more than 0.7 percent to 28,396.30, as seen at 11.15 am. The index has now extended gains for the third consecutive session.

<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/auto-lcvshcvs/ashokleyland/AL">Ashok Leyland</a> shares were the top gainers on the index, rising more than 2.5 percent to trade at Rs 183.66 apiece. The company is yet to release its monthly sales data.

<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/auto-carsjeeps/mahindramahindra/MM">Mahindra &amp; Mahindra</a> (M&amp;M) shares followed, rising more than 1 percent to trade at Rs 3,755.80 apiece. This comes after the Thar-maker reported a 25 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase in its December sales to 86,090. Its sales of utility vehicles grew 23 percent YoY to 50,946 in the domestic market, while that of commercial vehicles rose 34 percent YoY to 24,786 in the month of December.

"The calendar year 2025 ended on a positive note, with Mahindra clocking its highest-ever volumes in both SUVs and LCVs (&lt;3.5T) segments, a significant milestone for the company. In December, we achieved SUV sales of 50,946 units, a growth of 23% and LCV&lt; 3.5T sales of 24,786 units, a growth of 34%. The total vehicle sales stand at 86,090 units, a 25% year-on-year growth," said Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of Automotive Division at M&amp;M.

In September, India cut the tax on SUVs with engines above 1500 cc to 40% from about 50% to boost demand, a change that applies to most of Mahindra's SUV range.

The Naukri.com-parent, which had invested Rs 86 crore in the food delivery startup between 2010 and 2013, has seen the value of its stake significantly multiply over the years.
<h3><strong>Info Edge's stake in Zomato:</strong></h3>
Info Edge held 12.38 percent stake (119.46 crore shares) in Eternal at the end of the September quarter of the ongoing financial year 2026. At Eternal shares' current price of Rs 282.85 apiece, Info Edge’s stake holding would be worth Rs 32,000 crore.

The Sanjeev Bikhchandani-led company has diluted its stake in Eternal several times in between, including during the company’s initial public offering in 2021 that delivered strong returns. During the IPO, Info Edge made a bumper profit of 64.5 times on the issue price.

Zomato shares (now known as Eternal) listed with a premium of over 51 percent over the IPO price at Rs 115 apiece. After the IPO success, Info Edge Founder Sanjeev Bikhchandani told <em>Moneycontrol</em> that Zomato’s strong listing was the ultimate validation and public proof of the doctrine – “invest smartly in start-ups and over a decade or so you will strike gold”.

A Contingent Liability Adjustment Mechanism (CLAM) was entered between Vodafone Group and Vodafone Idea (Vi) at the time of the 2017 merger agreement between Vodafone India and Idea Cellular and covers pre-merger contingent liabilities in relation to legal, regulatory, tax, and other matters of the two merging parties.

Under the CLAM, Vodafone's maximum exposure was capped at Rs 8,369 crore at the time of the merger and taking into account payments already made, the reduced exposure was capped at Rs 6,394 crore and the deadline for the pact after an extension was December 31, 2025.

This comes after the Union Cabinet likely approved a five-year moratorium on the company’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.

At 11:10 am on January 1, Vodafone Idea stock was trading 9% higher at 11.71.

The Cabinet on December 31 likely approved a proposal to freeze Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues at Rs 87,695 crore as of December 31 and reschedule the repayments over FY2032–41. The decision also allows for a reassessment of the dues by a government-appointed panel, government sources told Moneycontrol.

Total taxes on cigarettes in India currently account for about 53 percent of the retail prices, well below the World Health Organization (WHO) benchmark of 75 percent which is aimed at discouraging consumption. This includes a 28 percent goods and services tax and additional value-based levy based on the size of the cigarettes.

The duty translates into a 22-28 percent increase in overall costs for 75-85 mm cigarettes, analysts at ICICI Securities said. "Cigarettes longer than 75 mm account for roughly 16% of ITC's volumes and are likely to see price increases of 2–3 rupees per stick as a result of the levy," they said.
<h3><strong>Tobacco stocks:</strong></h3>
ITC shares have fallen nearly 10 percent in the past five days, and nearly 12 percent in the past six months. The shares currently have a P/E ratio of 25.02, and a market capitalisation of Rs 4.59 lakh crore.

Godfrey Phillips India shares fell around 16 percent in the past five days, and around 20 percent in the past six months. The stock P/E ratio stands at 43.45, and market capitalisation at Rs 36,787 crore.

ITC shares fall 9%, Godfrey Phillips down 15% as govt imposes new excise duty on cigarettes

The shares of tobacco companies sharply dropped in trade on January 1 after the government imposed new excise duty on cigarettes.

ITC shares dropped more than 9 percent to Rs 365.10 apiece, leading losses on the Nifty 50 index. Godfrey Phillips India shares meanwhile tumbled 15 percent to Rs 2,345.50 apiece in the morning trading hours of Thursday.
Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025:
The Parliament in December approved the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, clearing the way for a sharp increase in duties on cigarettes and other tobacco products. It replaces a temporary levy on cigarettes and tobacco products.
