Shares of shipping and logistics firms rallied on Wednesday amid indications of a possible de-escalation in the West Asia conflict.

Statements from Iranian authorities, including the President’s indication of openness to ending the war and confirmation by the foreign minister of communication with the United States, signalled a potential easing of tensions.

US President Donald Trump also said Washington could halt its military operations against Iran within two to three weeks, adding that Tehran may not necessarily need to reach a formal agreement for the conflict to wind down.

Shares of Great Eastern Shipping Company rose up to 3.5 percent, while Shipping Corporation of India advanced 6.5 percent.

Shreeji Shipping Global and Seamec gained 4.37 percent and 3.06 percent, respectively.

Delhivery shares rose over 5 percent, while Blue Dart Express and Allcargo Logistics gained 3.82 percent and 7.8 percent, respectively.

Pravesh Gour, Senior Technical Analyst at Swastika Investmart, said shipping stocks emerged as key beneficiaries as the Strait of Hormuz is a vital global trade route, especially for oil transportation, and any reduction in conflict risk boosts confidence in shipping and logistics companies.

Lower geopolitical uncertainty typically leads to smoother trade flows and reduced insurance and operational costs, which in turn improves profitability expectations for these firms, he added.

Market sentiment was supported by easing geopolitical concerns, particularly optimism around de-escalation in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, prompting fresh buying in the sector.

Brent crude prices also fell below USD 99 per barrel.

A reduction in hostilities is seen as critical for the restoration of normal transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route handling about 20 percent of global oil and LNG shipments. Any easing of disruptions is expected to stabilise energy flows and improve visibility for shipping activity.

Shares of Garden Reach Shipbuilders &amp;amp; Engineers surged over 16 percent to Rs 2,289.60 on the BSE after the company reported its highest-ever annual turnover of Rs 6,400 crore for FY 2025-26, up 26 percent from Rs 5,076 crore in the previous fiscal.

The positive sentiment extended to other defence shipbuilding stocks, with Cochin Shipyard rising 12.3 percent and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders gaining 10.2 percent.

Defence shares rallied sharply on Wednesday, with the Nifty India Defence index rising nearly 7 percent intraday, snapping a two-day decline amid apparent cracks between US-Europe ties.

Market participants tracked developments in the United States and Europe amid rising unease among NATO allies over the ongoing war in Iran.

France and Italy have expressed reservations over certain US-Israeli military actions, even as US President Donald Trump criticised European NATO allies for what he described as inadequate support during the month-long conflict involving Iran, underscoring emerging divisions within the alliance.

Earlier this month, Trump termed longstanding NATO allies as &quot;cowards&quot; over their perceived lack of support.

Trump also alleged that France had prevented aircraft carrying military supplies to Israel from flying over its territory, stating on Truth Social that Paris had been &quot;very unhelpful&quot;. The French presidency said it was surprised by the remarks and maintained that its decision was in line with its policy since the beginning of the conflict.

Italy, last week, denied permission for U.S. military aircraft to land at the Sigonella air base in Sicily before proceeding to the West Asia.

Spain, on its part, defended its decision to completely shut its airspace to U.S. aircraft involved in operations against Iran.

Trump also criticised the United Kingdom, suggesting that countries dependent on fuel supplies through the Strait of Hormuz should source energy from the United States and take a more assertive stance in the conflict.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, meanwhile, said he believed the war in Iran was illegal.

The United States, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom are all members of NATO, and the recent developments point to a broader divergence between Washington and its European allies.

Market participants said that if the United States adopts a more inward-looking approach under Trump and distances itself from NATO, it could prompt European nations to diversify their defence procurement sources.

Pravesh Gour, Senior Technical Analyst at Swastika Investmart, said &quot;The global strategic landscape could be heading toward a major reset if the United States, under Donald Trump, distances itself from NATO. His repeated criticism of European allies, particularly over their limited role in tensions involving Iran, has raised fresh doubts about the durability of transatlantic defence ties. If this rhetoric translates into policy, Europe may find itself navigating a new security reality without the same level of American backing that has defined its defence structure for decades.&quot;

He added that such a shift would place the European Union in a challenging position. For years, European nations have relied heavily on U.S. defence systems, intelligence, and military support. A reduced American role would force the EU to rethink its procurement strategies and accelerate efforts toward strategic autonomy. However, replacing U.S. capabilities is not just a financial challenge but also a geopolitical one, as Europe must carefully choose partners that align with its political values and long-term interests.

&quot;In this context, India stands out as a compelling alternative. As a democratic nation with rapidly growing defence manufacturing capabilities, India offers both reliability and scalability. Unlike China or Russia, which present strategic and political complications for Europe, India provides a more balanced and cooperative partnership option. Its push to expand domestic defence production and increase exports aligns well with Europe’s need to diversify its supply chain. This evolving dynamic could pave the way for a stronger India–EU defence partnership, reshaping how global military supply networks operate. As alliances become more fluid and less centralized, countries are likely to prioritize flexibility and shared values over traditional dependencies. If these trends continue, India may not just become an alternative supplier but a key pillar in the next generation of global defence cooperation,&quot; he noted.

Sunny Agrawal - Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, said &quot;The recent Middle East war is an indication of Trump to its NATO allies to ensure own safety measures for their cargo in Strait of Hormuz and defence deal between Saudi Arabia and Ukraine is the clear indication that the US is no longer a trusted partner to provide defence cover to its partners. Domestic defence companies are sitting on a robust order book on the back of the strong defence spend by Government of India and have strong technological capabilities to service the potential exports requirement. In the medium term, the street is pencilling strong export opportunities for the defence companies across various products like missiles, guns, artillery shell, drones, anti-drone systems, aerospace, telematics etc as India is the only strong trusted partner to supply defence equipment in the current uncertain global environment.&quot;

Sentiment for defence shares was also supported by latest remarks from US envoy to India Sergio Gor.

The envoy emphasised a results-driven approach to deepen bilateral ties, identifying defence, trade and emerging technologies as key areas of cooperation.

He described defence engagement as the &quot;most strategically significant&quot; pillar, citing ongoing joint exercises and growing interoperability between the two countries.

&quot;India is a major defence partner, and defence cooperation is one of the brightest spots in our bilateral relationship,&quot; he said, referring to exercises such as Malabar and Tiger Triumph.

In an interview with SPAN Magazine, Gor also highlighted the personal rapport between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that it strengthens bilateral ties.
US Envoy Sergio Gor Bets Big on India
The Nifty India Defence index rose 6.9 percent to an intraday high of 7,712.75, snapping its 2-day decline during which it fell up to 5.5 percent.

All the 19 constituents of the defence index traded in the green.

Garden Reach Shipbuilders &amp;amp; Engineers was top gainer, rising up to 20 percent after the company reported its highest-ever annual turnover of Rs 6,400 crore for FY 2025-26, marking a 26 per cent increase from Rs 5,076 crore in the previous fiscal.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) gained 6 percent after the defence ministry on Tuesday inked a Rs 1,950 crore contract with state-run BEL for the procurement of two mountain radars and related infrastructure for the Indian Air Force.

The Navratna defence public sector company also reported a provisional and unaudited turnover of approximately Rs 26,750 crore for the financial year 2025-26.

Banking shares on Wednesday snapped a two-day losing streak and rose more than 3 percent, tracking a sharp rebound in benchmark indices.

The Sensex and Nifty ended their two-session decline and surged over 2.6 percent on the first day of the financial year on April 1, amid easing concerns over oil prices and global inflation.

Sentiment improved after US president Donald Trump said Washington could end its military attacks on Iran within two to three weeks, adding that Tehran would not need to strike a deal as a precondition for the conflict to wind down.

Brent crude prices slipped to $105 per barrel, while Asian markets climbed 3.7 percent on expectations that the month-long conflict could end soon.

The Nifty Bank rose 3.04 percent to hit an intraday high of 51,806.25. All its 14 constituents traded in the green. The index had declined 6.5 percent over the previous two sessions.

Punjab National Bank was the top gainer, rising nearly 4 percent. AU Small Finance Bank and Axis Bank advanced 3.73 percent and 3.72 percent, respectively.

Among heavyweights, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank rose between 1.5 percent and 3 percent.
What lies ahead?
Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, said the price structure remains bearish with sustained lower lows and broad-based selling pressure across constituents.

&quot;The sharp fall reflects a lack of support from heavyweight banking stocks, which dragged the index lower. Bank Nifty ended FY26 with a loss of 2.50 percent, highlighting its underperformance in the latter part of the year,&quot; he said.

He added that immediate support is placed in the 49,900–49,800 zone, and a sustained move below this could extend the decline towards 49,500 and then 49,200 in the near term. On the upside, the 50,600–50,700 range is expected to act as immediate resistance.

The size of said order is Rs 29,69,03,155 and to be executed by April 6, 2029.

Granules India shares gained 2 percent in the early trade on April 1 after its wholly owned subsidiary, Granules Life Sciences, received a Voluntary Action Indicated (VAI) classification following an inspection by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

At 09:18am, Granules India was quoting at Rs 634.50, up Rs 13.35, or 2.15 percent, on the BSE.

The inspection of its manufacturing facility in Shamirpet, Telangana, was conducted between December 15 and 19, 2025, covering current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and pre-approval inspection (PAI) for oral solid dosage operations.

The Establishment Inspection Report (EIR) has been issued, and the inspection has now been closed with no regulatory action recommended.
