Foreign investors sold nearly Rs 6,000 crore worth of IT stocks in the second half of February after offloading around Rs 11,000 crore in the first half of the month, as concerns over the impact of generative artificial intelligence triggered a sharp selloff in the sector.

The heavy selling came amid fears that rapid advances in generative AI could reduce demand for large-scale, human-led coding and IT support services, which remain a key revenue driver for India’s software exporters.

Combined selling by FIIs in IT stocks during February stood at nearly Rs 17,000 crore. Despite the sector-specific selling, FIIs remained net buyers in Indian equities overall, purchasing around Rs 15,250 crore during the month.

Following the selloff, FIIs’ combined investment in IT stocks declined to about Rs 4.18 lakh crore at the end of February, the lowest level in four years. This represents a 21.8 percent drop from Rs 5.34 lakh crore at the end of January 2026, according to NSDL data.

Foreign investors have been consistently reducing exposure to IT stocks since the start of 2025, with cumulative selling of about Rs 74,698 crore during the period. Details of stock-wise stake reductions are expected to be disclosed in the March quarter shareholding patterns.

FII holdings in IT stocks had stood at a record Rs 7.3 lakh crore at the beginning of 2025. With the recent decline in stock prices alongside continued selling, the value of these holdings has fallen about 42.8 percent.

The decline in stock prices during February has been sharp across major IT companies. Infosys fell 20.4 percent during the month, while TCS dropped 18 percent and HCL Technologies declined 20.1 percent. Tech Mahindra fell 23.5 percent, Persistent Systems lost 23 percent, and Wipro declined around 17.4 percent. The Nifty IT index dropped 20.8 percent during the same period.

Apart from IT, FIIs also reduced exposure to a few other sectors in the second half of February. They sold shares worth Rs 5,238 crore in consumer services and Rs 1,775 crore in telecom stocks. FMCG stocks saw selling of around Rs 769 crore, while chemicals and consumer durables witnessed selling of over Rs 350 crore each.

At the same time, several sectors saw strong buying interest from foreign investors in the latter half of the month. Capital goods and auto stocks attracted the highest inflows, with FIIs purchasing shares worth Rs 4,103 crore and Rs 3,075 crore respectively in the second half of February, following purchases of Rs 8,032 crore and Rs 511 crore in the first half.

Construction and metals stocks also saw buying of Rs 2,742 crore and Rs 2,359 crore respectively during the second half, after inflows of Rs 1,745 crore and Rs 3,279 crore in the first half of the month. Financial services and power stocks attracted buying of Rs 2,243 crore and Rs 1,234 crore respectively in the second half of February, after inflows of Rs 6,175 crore and Rs 3,272 crore during the first half.

HDFC Mutual Fund has bought nearly 0.7 percent equity stake in Amber Enterprises India, a manufacturer of air conditioners, electronics, and mobility solutions, for Rs 185 crore via open market transactions on March 5.

<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/miscellaneous/amberenterprisesindialimited/AEI01">Amber Enterprises India</a> shares climbed 2.38 percent to Rs 7,834 amid high volumes on the BSE but still in the broad range of March 2. The stock sustained above all key moving averages.

As per the bulk deals data published by exchanges on Thursday, HDFC Mutual Fund has acquired 2.41 lakh shares (equivalent to 0.68 percent of paid-up equity) in Amber Enterprises for Rs 184.95 crore.

The buying price for above shares was Rs 7,650 per share.

Meanwhile, Xduce Technologies, the US-based app development and digital transformation company, has bought additional 10 lakh shares (1.77 percent) stake in <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/computers-software/devinformationtechnology/DIT02">Dev Information Technology</a> for Rs 2.66 crore from Pravinaben Pradyumnabhai Shah, the relative of promoter Prerak Pradyumna Shah. The transaction price was Rs 26.68 per share.

Dev Information Technology shares declined 4.5 percent to Rs 26.18 after couple of days of rally.

On March 2, Xduce acquired 9.09 percent stake in Dev Information Technology, in addition to 12.48 percent stake buy in January.

Diagnostic chain <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/labslife-sciences-services/invictadiagnostic/IDL">Invicta Diagnostic</a> shares were locked in 20 percent upper circuit at Rs 70.85 on the NSE after a consolidation since February. Investi Global Opportunity Fund PCC - Cell 1 has bought 1.2 lakh shares (0.95 percent stake) in the company at Rs 70.44 per share, valued at Rs 84.5 lakh.

As per the block deals data, Goldman Sachs Bank Europe SE - ODI has picked up 9.71 lakh shares (0.26 percent stake) in <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/infrastructure/afconsinfrastructure/AIL08">Afcons Infrastructure</a> from Morgan Stanley Asia Singapore Pte at Rs 276.5 per share, amounting to Rs 26.8 crore.

Shares of Reliance Industries Ltd have fallen about 4 percent this week and nearly 8 percent over the past month amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, though analysts say the company may not be negatively impacted by the recent spike in crude and LNG prices.

According to a recent report by JM Financial, Reliance could in fact see near-term benefits from the rise in energy prices, supported by a jump in diesel refining margins and a potential improvement in petrochemical spreads.

The brokerage noted that diesel cracks have surged to about $35–$42 per barrel over the past two days from around $20 earlier. With diesel accounting for roughly 40–50 percent of the yield at Reliance’s refinery, sustained diesel cracks of around $30 per barrel could lift the company’s gross refining margin by $4–$5 per barrel.

JM Financial estimates that every $1 per barrel increase in Reliance’s gross refining margin could raise annual EBITDA by about Rs 45 billion, or roughly 2.2 percent, while also adding about Rs 29 per share, or 1.7 percent, to the company’s valuation.

However, the brokerage said the current spike in diesel cracks is unlikely to be sustainable. It also highlighted the possibility of government intervention through a windfall tax if margins remain elevated, similar to measures taken after the Russia-Ukraine conflict when the government capped diesel and petrol cracks at about $20 per barrel and imposed a windfall levy on excess margins.

Reliance could also benefit from stronger petrochemical margins. JM Financial said petrochemical product prices typically rise along with crude prices, while feedstock costs for Reliance are less sensitive because the company has limited dependence on crude-linked naphtha.

The company’s petrochemical feedstock mix consists of roughly 25 percent ethane, 50 percent off-gases and about 25 percent crude-linked naphtha, providing some insulation from higher crude costs.

The recent decline in Reliance shares appears largely linked to foreign institutional investor selling. FII ownership stood at 21.1 percent at the end of December 2025 compared with a peak of 28.3 percent at the end of March 2021.

At current market prices, JM Financial said the stock is trading close to its bear-case valuation of Rs 1,275 per share. The brokerage reiterated its buy rating with an unchanged target price of Rs 1,730.

JM Financial said the current share price reflects concerns about near-term weakness in retail EBITDA growth due to investments in quick commerce, but does not fully capture the expected 15–16 percent EBITDA growth in the digital business over the next two to three years, supported by a projected 10–11 percent ARPU CAGR.

The brokerage expects Reliance to deliver EPS growth of about 14–16 percent annually over the next three to five years. Key triggers include the potential IPO of Jio in the coming months, subject to regulatory approval for large IPO norms, and a possible telecom tariff hike afterward.

At current levels, the stock is trading at about 16.8 times FY28 estimated earnings compared with a three-year average of 23.9 times. Its FY28 estimated EV/EBITDA multiple stands at 8.2 times versus a three-year average of 11.9 times, JM Financial said.
