The investors moved to defensive shares on Friday amid heavy selling across sectors following the ongoing conflict in West Asia, with fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) stocks attracting buying interest.

The Nifty FMCG Index was the only sectoral index trading in the green while other sectoral gauges remained under pressure.

Shares of FMCG companies such as Tata Consumer Products and Hindustan Unilever rose up to 3 percent as investors flocked to defensives.

Meanwhile, analysts at Choice Institutional Equities cautioned that sustained volatility in crude oil prices could pressure gross margins across the FMCG sector.

Crude oil and its derivatives form a significant share of raw material costs, particularly for beauty and personal care companies where they account for about 30–40 percent of the raw material basket. Food-focused FMCG companies have relatively lower exposure, with crude derivatives accounting for roughly 10–15 percent of total raw material costs.

If crude prices rise to USD 100–130 per barrel, the brokerage estimates a potential 100–250 basis point impact on gross margins for most beauty and personal care FMCG players.

To offset the cost pressure, companies may need to implement high single-digit to low double-digit price increases. However, this could lead to near-term volume pressure and potentially reverse the volume recovery seen over the past one to two quarters.

The impact on food-focused FMCG companies is expected to remain limited, as their key raw material exposure is palm oil, which has remained relatively stable.

Analysts at Axis Securities in its February report had cited improving demand conditions and structural growth trends in the sector.

According to the brokerage, results for the December quarter of FY26 indicated signs of a broad-based recovery in consumption sentiment across both urban and rural markets. Most staple companies under its coverage reported gradual strengthening in demand trends, supported by easing inflation, particularly in food categories.

Management commentary across companies also pointed to improving consumer confidence and stabilising purchase behaviour. Volume-led topline growth was visible across several players, suggesting the recovery is not solely price-driven but also consumption-led.

While gross margins remained mixed across companies, the overall trend suggested gradual normalisation. Higher advertising spending undertaken to regain and protect market share has slowed EBITDA margin expansion in the near term, though analysts view this as a strategic investment to support brand strength and growth over the medium term.

The brokerage said the FMCG sector remains structurally attractive, with multiple long-term growth drivers intact. Several product categories remain under-penetrated, particularly in rural markets, leaving scope for volume expansion.

Demand conditions are expected to improve further in the coming quarters, supported by easing inflation, potential interest rate cuts, GST-related reforms and expectations of a favourable monsoon.

Shares of renewable energy companies traded mixed to lower on March 13, a day after a sharp rally across the sector, as broader market weakness and profit booking weighed on several solar and wind stocks. At 11:45 am, the Sensex was down 670 points or 0.9 percent at 75,365, while the Nifty declined 234 points to 23,405. Market breadth remained weak with 2,734 shares declining against 932 advancing.

Among renewable energy stocks, several counters slipped after Thursday’s surge. Solex Energy was among the biggest losers, falling about 5.4 percent to Rs 930.9. Borosil Renewables declined 3.7 percent to Rs 406.5, while Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy dropped around 3.7 percent to Rs 172.74.

Inox Wind fell about 3.3 percent to Rs 80.9, Servotech Renewable Power slipped 2.9 percent to Rs 69.12, and Suzlon Energy declined around 2 percent to Rs 41.56. Saatvik Green Energy and Websol Energy Systems also traded lower, down between 2 percent and 3 percent during the session.

However, some renewable energy counters remained in positive territory despite the broader market weakness. ACME Solar Holdings rose about 6.5 percent to Rs 255.71, while NTPC Green Energy gained 3.6 percent to Rs 101.21. KPI Green Energy also advanced around 1.7 percent, and Premier Energies edged up 1.4 percent. Waaree Energies traded modestly higher, rising about 1.2 percent to Rs 2,771.00, even as Waaree Renewable Technologies declined around 1.5 percent.

The mixed performance comes after renewable energy stocks rallied sharply on March 12 as crude oil prices surged toward the $100 per barrel mark amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, prompting investors to rotate into alternative energy plays.

Sectorally, the Nifty Energy index was down about 0.5 percent during late morning trade on Friday, broadly in line with weakness across most market segments. Broader market indices were also under pressure, with the Nifty Midcap 100 falling around 1.6 percent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 declining nearly 2 percent.

Mid and smallcap indices fell up to 2.5 percent on Friday, extending their losses as the ongoing conflict in West Asia and rising crude oil prices weighed on investor sentiment.

The Nifty Midcap 100 index has declined in seven of the nine sessions so far in March, slipping 10 percent. Friday marked the third straight session of losses for the index.

National Aluminium Company (NALCO) and Ashok Leyland were among the major laggards in the Nifty Midcap 100 index, falling 5.55 percent and 4.19 percent, respectively.

The Nifty Smallcap 100 index has also declined in seven out of the nine sessions in March so far, dropping about 10 percent. Friday marked the third consecutive session of decline for the smallcap index.

Laurus Labs and Data Patterns (India) were among the major losers in the Nifty Smallcap 100 index.

The Sensex tumbled 1,579.82 points or 2 percent to 74,454.60 during intra-day trade. The benchmark finally settled at 74,563.92, down 1,470.50 points or 1.93 percent. The Nifty tanked 488.05 points or 2.06 percent to end at 23,151.10.

The Nifty has dropped 5.3 percent this week, marking its biggest drop since June 2022, while Sensex slid 5.5 percent in worst week since May 2020.

Crude oil prices rose after Iranian strikes on two oil tankers raised concerns over possible supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.

Brent crude futures climbed close to USD 100 per barrel on Thursday before trading flat. The global benchmark Brent crude traded marginally higher at around USD 100.5 per barrel on Friday.

Higher crude prices typically weigh on Indian equities as the country imports a large share of its oil requirements. Rising oil costs increase the import bill, widen the current account deficit and add to inflationary pressures.

Auto stocks remained under pressure for a second straight session on Friday morning, with the Nifty Auto index falling more than 3.5 percent as concerns around rising crude oil prices, potential gas shortages and supply-chain disruptions continued to weigh on the sector. The index has lost 11 percent this week.

At close, the Nifty Auto index was down 3.6 percent -- among the worst performing sectoral indices today. The broader market also crashed, with the Sensex falling over 1,470 points to 74,564, while the Nifty declined over 488 points or 2.1 percent to 23,151. Market breadth remained negative with 899 shares advancing against 3,200 declines.

Brokerage JPMorgan said geopolitical tensions and rising commodity prices are creating dual risks for the Indian auto sector -- cost inflation as well as potential production disruptions. Despite the near-term risks, the brokerage said it prefers Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra &amp;amp; Mahindra and Hyundai Motor India because of relatively stronger growth visibility and valuation support.

Selling was broad-based across major automobile and auto-component stocks in early trade. Eicher Motors shares fell 3.4 percent, Mahindra &amp;amp; Mahindra declined 3.3 percent, and Maruti Suzuki was down 3.2 percent -- with the three stocks being among the top losers on Nifty 50. Another major stock Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles ended lower by 3.2 percent.

Among other stocks, Ashok Leyland crashed 4.4 percent. Auto-component makers Bharat Forge and Samvardhana Motherson declined about 5.9 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively. Two-wheeler stocks were also under pressure, with Hero MotoCorp ending about 3.5 percent lower, Bajaj Auto falling about 3.1 percent, and TVS Motor slipping around 2.9 percent.

The weakness extends Thursday’s sharp sell-off in the sector, when automobile stocks tumbled after crude oil prices surged back toward $100 per barrel amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and concerns over shipping disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to JPMorgan, shortages of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) could potentially lead to production shutdowns or disruptions for automobile manufacturers and component suppliers. These fuels are widely used in heat treatment processes across metal casting and forging operations in the auto supply chain.

The brokerage also warned that potential disruptions to compressed natural gas (CNG) availability at fuel pumps could influence consumer preferences, particularly in segments where CNG-powered vehicles have gained traction. Higher fuel prices and rising commodity costs could also weigh on profitability for automobile companies, while global shipping disruptions could impact export volumes, it added.

The sector has already been lagging the broader market this year. The Nifty Auto index has fallen about 12 percent so far in 2026, compared with a roughly 9.5 percent decline in the Nifty benchmark index, according to the brokerage. Even so, JPMorgan said that automobile retail volumes in March remain strong so far, although weakening consumer sentiment could threaten the demand recovery seen after recent GST cuts.

Ajanta Pharma has decisively broken out above the long-standing resistance zone of Rs 3,020–3,080, which has been in place since October 2024. Over the last four sessions, volume has consistently exceeded average levels, reflecting strong participation and genuine buying interest.

The price now trades comfortably above all key EMAs, with upward-sloping averages. Momentum indicators remain in bullish territory, and trend indicators suggest the bullish move is likely to continue. The structure favours buyers while the breakout zone holds.

HFCL | CMP: Rs 74.47



HFCL has formed a clear double-bottom bullish reversal pattern (highlighted in yellow). Volume has increased over the past four consecutive sessions and the stock trades above moving averages.

The price sits above the 20- and 50-day EMAs and is attempting to reclaim the 200-day EMA. Momentum indicators are in bullish territory, and trend indicators point to continued upside potential.

As long as the price holds above the Rs 6,680 zone, which aligns near the 20-day EMA, the structure remains positive. A continuation toward the Rs 7,800 zone appears likely in the near term.

Following this confirmation, price action has witnessed strong bullish momentum, gaining nearly 19 percent within four trading sessions while maintaining a clear higher-high and higher-low structure.

The stock is currently trading near its 52-week high, supported by rising volumes and strong price acceptance above all major moving averages. The previous resistance zone near Rs 110 has now turned into a strong support area, reinforcing the bullish structure.

Historically, the stock has consistently respected the 20-day EMA as a dynamic support during its uptrend phases, and the current pullback toward this level indicates healthy consolidation within a bullish structure. The price remains well above the 50-day and 100-day EMAs, reinforcing the positive trend outlook.
