Gold and silver exchange traded funds (ETFs) crashed on January 22 amid easing tariff concerns. Analysts have advised what investors should do – buy the dip or wait for more consolidation in the precious metals.

The ETFs are mirroring the <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/gold-silver-etfs-tumble-up-to-11-after-record-rally-amid-easing-trump-tariff-concerns-what-lies-ahead-13785023.html">fall in the gold and silver prices</a> which saw a record rally earlier. Tata Silver ETF dropped as much as 21 percent to its day’s low, while Birla Sun Life Gold ETF fell 12 percent before seeing some partial recovery.
<h3><strong>Why are ETFs falling today?</strong></h3>
Trump said that he had reached the outlines of a deal with NATO on the island's future. "Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st," Trump wrote on Truth Social after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos. He did not give details of the deal.

Additionally, he also said that US will not use military force to seize Greenland. "I won't do that," Trump said. "Okay? Now everyone's saying 'oh, good' that's probably the biggest statement I made because people thought I would use force. I don't have to use force, I don't want to use force, I won't use force,” he added.

"Today’s sharp slump in silver and gold ETFs, with some dropping as much as ~21%, reflects an abrupt shift in macro sentiment rather than a fundamental breakdown in precious metals," said Justin Khoo, Senior Market Analyst - APAC, VT Market.

Earlier, gold and silver prices had sharply shot up after Trump threatened to use military force to acquire Greenland, triggering tensions between US and EU nations. The tariff threats further fuelled the geopolitical tensions and subsequently safe-haven assets like gold and silver due to a rise in risk-off sentiment.

Khoo added that while spot gold and silver still reflect historically elevated levels, the ETF correction looks like profit-taking and risk-rebalancing as equity markets rally.
<h3><strong>What should you do now?</strong></h3>
The market is divided between those viewing corrections as buying opportunities and those warning of overheated conditions, said Tanvi Kanchan, Associate Director at Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers. She however added that despite price swings, fundamentals are compelling, driven by near-record industrial demand from solar panels, electric vehicles, and AI infrastructure.

“Given the current geopolitical landscape—from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine to U.S.-China tensions and uncertainty around trade policies under the new Trump administration—precious metals maintain their relevance as portfolio hedges,” the analyst said.

Kanchan however cautioned that after such explosive gains in 2025, timing a single entry point is “treacherous”. “Rather than deploying capital all at once, investors should consider spreading purchases over the coming weeks or months. This approach captures the dip while protecting against further corrections that could see silver test,” she said.

For conservative investors, allocating 5-10 percent of portfolios to precious metals ETFs through systematic purchases reduces timing risk while maintaining exposure to an asset class that benefits from geopolitical instability and monetary policy uncertainty, according to the expert.

With structural drivers such as central-bank accumulation, long-term demand and inflation hedging undiminished, disciplined investors may see this correction as a strategic accumulation zone, but should avoid aggressive short-term speculation given ongoing volatility, Khoo from VT Market said.
<h3><strong>Is there more volatility ahead?</strong></h3>
Siddharth Maurya, Founder &amp; Managing Director at Vibhavangal Anukulakara, said that the drastic correction in gold &amp; silver ETFs is a result of profit-booking as well as unwinding of initial risk-off strategies when metal prices reached record highs.

“Although precious metals are supported by demand trends as well as supply gaps in the global market, the current scenario of correction in metal prices indicates volatility in the short term,” he added.

Nirpendra Yadav, Senior Commodity Research Analyst at Bonanza, said that with global uncertainties, central bank gold accumulation, and expectations of softer real interest rates over the medium term, gold continues to play an important portfolio-hedging and diversification role.

Harshal Dasani, Business Head at INVasset PMS, highlighted the sharper fall in silver ETFs compared to MCX silver, and attributed it to how Indian silver had moved into a speculative premium ahead of the Budget, rather than a sudden collapse in underlying global fundamentals.

“Over the last two sessions, silver on MCX had significantly outperformed COMEX because of expectations around an import duty tweak or a policy signal in the Budget,” he said. “That premium was not driven by physical tightness alone; it was largely sentiment-led and expectation-driven. Once it became clear that no immediate duty relief was forthcoming, that excess premium started unwinding. Silver ETFs, which are priced off domestic spot benchmarks but also reflect investor flows and arbitrage pressures, tend to react faster in such “premium collapse” phases. When retail investors rush to book profits, ETF units face additional selling pressure even if MCX futures are still stabilizing,” he added.

PNB Housing Finance shares declined around 8 percent to trade at Rs 860 apiece.

<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/finance-housing/pnbhousingfinance/PHF">PNB Housing Finance</a> reported a standalone net profit of Rs 520.96 crore for the October-December quarter of the ongoing financial year 2026. This marks a 10.5 percent year-on-year (YoY) jump from the Rs 471.43 crore net profit reported in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. However, the net profit fell around 17 percent sequentially from the Rs 626.49 crore reported in Q2 FY26.

The firm’s revenue from operations meanwhile gained around 10 percent YoY to Rs 2,109.57 crore in Q3 FY26, from Rs 1,922.76 crore in Q3 FY25. Revenue too however declined around 3 percent sequentially from Rs 2,167.91 crore in Q2 FY26.

JM Financial said that PNB Housing Finance reported an overall mixed quarter with PAT missing its estimate. This was primarily driven by weak disbursment/AUM growth and elevated opex levels, the domestic brokerage said.

“On an overall level however asset quality trends were positive, with stable GS3/NS3 at 1.04%/0.68% respectively. Credit costs continued to be negative and stood at -0.19% (vs. -0.55% in 2Q), in-line with management guidance,” JM Financial added, while holding its ‘Buy’ call on the stock with a target price of Rs 1,180 apiece, implying an upside potential of nearly 27 percent from the stock’s previous closing price.

Motilal Oswal meanwhile said that PNB Housing Finance’s earnings miss estimates due to high open, with net interest margin declining by approximately 4 basis points sequentially. “The company reported a mixed operating performance in 3QFY26, with earnings supported by higher provision write-backs, partly offset by elevated operating expenses and weaker noninterest income,” it said.
<h3><strong>Bank of India Q3 Results:</strong></h3>
<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/banks-public-sector/bankindia/BOI">Bank of India</a> shares gained nearly 7 percent to trade at Rs 168.4 apiece, the highest level seen by the stock since January 2018.

Bank of India (BOI) reported a standalone net profit of Rs 2,704.67 crore for Q3 FY26, marking a 7 percent YoY rise from Rs 2,516.69 crore in Q3 FY25. The lender’s net interest income meanwhile grew more than 6 percent YoY to Rs 6,460.69 crore during the quarter under review.

Asset quality improved, with gross NPA ratio and net NPA ratio reducing to 2.26 percent and 0.60 percent respectively. Return on Assets (RoA) remained flat on an YoY basis at 0.96 percent.

Net profit margin improved to 12.75 percent in Q3 FY26, from 12.61 percent in Q3 FY25.
<h3><strong>Tata Communications Q3 Results:</strong></h3>

Tata Communications reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 365.28 crore for Q3 FY26, marking a 55 percent YoY increase from Rs 235.96 crore net profit reported in Q3 FY25. The firm’s revenue from operations meanwhile rose around 7 percent YoY to Rs 6,188.97 crore.

Motilal Oswal said that the firm reported a steady Q3, albeit slightly weaker that its expectations. The domestic brokerage said that the firm’s 9 percent YoY data revenue growth was driven by a recovery in core connectivity and sustained growth in the digital portfolio. The order book remains strong with healthy double-digit growth YoY (and QoQ), driven by large deal wins in core connectivity. The funnel remains robust with digital portfolio contribution at approximately 70 percent, it added.

Motilal reiterated its ‘Neutral’ rating on the stock, with a target price of Rs 1,790 apiece, which implies an upside potential of nearly 11 percent from the stock’s previous closing price.

JM Financial meanwhile said that the company’s consolidated revenue was largely in-line with its estimate. The domestic brokerage maintained its ‘Buy’ rating on the stock, with a target price of Rs 2,250 apiece, implying an upside potential of more than 39 percent from the stock’s previous closing price.

<h3><strong>Why are shrimp and textile stocks rallying?</strong></h3>
The shares of these export-oriented companies had significantly declined earlier after the Trump administration increased tariffs on Indian imports to a whopping 50 percent, citing New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil.

However, the rising expectations of India-US finalizing on the trade deal boosted the export-oriented shrimp and textile stocks, which derive a significant portion of their revenue from the American market.
<h3><strong>Shrimp stocks:</strong></h3>
Avanti Feeds shares jumped nearly 8 percent to trade at Rs 805.65 apiece. Apex Frozen Foods meanwhile rose more than 5 percent to trade at Rs 277.70 apiece.

Notably, US accounted for 53 percent of exports sales for Apex Frozen in FY25. North America meanwhile contributed to 65.4 percent of total sales for Avanti Feeds, as of Q1 FY25.

Coastal Corp shares were up around 5 percent.
<h3><strong>Textile stocks:</strong></h3>

Avanti Feeds, other export-oriented shares rise up to 8% on Trump's trade deal comment to Moneycontrol

The shares of shrimp and textile companies surged on January 22 amid rising hopes for India and US reaching their much-awaited trade deal, after US President Donald Trump’s exclusive comment to Moneycontrol.

The US President on Wednesday told Moneycontrol that he held Prime Minister Modi in high regard and described him as a close friend. “I have great respect for your Prime Minister. He’s a fantastic man and a friend of mine. We are going to have a good deal,” the US President said.

Trump's statement came after his address at the 56th Annual Summit of the World Economic Forum.
Why are shrimp and textile stocks rallying?
The shares of these export-oriented companies had significantly declined earlier after the Trump administration increased tariffs on Indian imports to a whopping 50 percent, citing New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil.

However, the rising expectations of India-US finalizing on the trade deal boosted the export-oriented shrimp and textile stocks, which derive a significant portion of their revenue from the American market.
Shrimp stocks:
Avanti Feeds shares jumped nearly 8 percent to trade at Rs 805.65 apiece. Apex Frozen Foods meanwhile rose more than 5 percent to trade at Rs 277.70 apiece.

Notably, US accounted for 53 percent of exports sales for Apex Frozen in FY25. North America meanwhile contributed to 65.4 percent of total sales for Avanti Feeds, as of Q1 FY25.

Coastal Corp shares were up around 5 percent.
Textile stocks:
Gokaldas Exports and Raymond Lifestyle shares gained more than 5 percent each, while Pearl Global Industries shares gained more than 2 percent.

<h3><strong>Recovery in silver ETFs:</strong></h3>
Tata Silver Exchange Traded Fund, which has earlier crashed 21 percent in the morning, recovered around 10 percent to trade at Rs 28.09 apiece, as seen at 10.30 am. The ETF is still down around 17 percent.

Bandhan Silver ETF meanwhile recovered more than 13 percent from its intraday low to trade at Rs 285.99 apiece. Groww Silver ETF meanwhile recovered over 14 percent, and Nippon India Silver ETF (Silverbees) recovered 12 percent from its day’s low.

HDFC Silver ETF gained around 13 percent intraday, while Axis Silver ETF surged 15 percent from its day’s low. Motilal Oswal Silver ETF meanwhile gained more than 10 percent from its day’s low.

Gold ETFs also staged a partial recovery, with today’s top loser Birla Sun Life Gold ETF recovering around 6 percent from its day’s low.
<h3><strong>Why are silver prices falling today?</strong></h3>
Trump said that he had reached the outlines of a deal with NATO on the island's future. "Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st," Trump wrote on Truth Social after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos. He did not give details of the deal.

Additionally, he also said that US will not use military force to seize Greenland. "I won't do that," Trump said. "Okay? Now everyone's saying 'oh, good' that's probably the biggest statement I made because people thought I would use force. I don't have to use force, I don't want to use force, I won't use force,” he added.

The analyst however cautioned that after the record bull run, timing a single entry point is "treacherous". "Rather than deploying capital all at once, investors should consider spreading purchases over the coming weeks or months. This approach captures the dip while protecting against further corrections that could see silver test," she said.

"For conservative investors, allocating 5-10% of portfolios to precious metals ETFs through systematic purchases reduces timing risk while maintaining exposure to an asset class that benefits from geopolitical instability and monetary policy uncertainty. The structural deficits and industrial demand provide a floor, but expect continued volatility as the market digests 2025's historic run," she added.

Hindustan Zinc shares crashed more than 6 percent to trade at Rs 653.1 apiece. This comes as the company is the largest producer of silver in India, and produces refined silver with a minimum 99.9 percent purity.

"Reversal of comments by ​the U.S. President was one factor that eased geopolitical tensions, and so we see a retracement in prices," Reuters quoted ANZ commodity strategist Soni Kumari as saying. "We still prefer gold as it has ‍central bank backing while it also remains on firmer ground as compared to other industrially-exposed precious metals as geopolitical tensions still persist," she added.

Goldman Sachs has raised its gold price forecast for December 2026 to $5,400 ​from its previous estimate of $4,900/oz. "We assume private sector diversification buyers, whose purchases hedge global policy risks and have driven the upside surprise to our price forecast, don't liquidate their gold holdings in 2026, effectively lifting the starting point of our price forecast," the brokerage said in a note dated Wednesday.

Goldman Sachs expects Western ETF holdings to rise as the U.S. Federal Reserve is likely to cut its rate by 50 basis points in 2026.
