Benchmark equity indices extended their gaining streak for a second day, as Nifty surpassed 25,600 during the session on October 16 for the first time since June 27, supported by broad-based buying that helped the test four-month highs despite a last-hour profit booking.

At close, the Sensex was up 862.23 points or 1.04 percent at 83,467.66, and the Nifty was up 261.75 points or 1.03 percent at 25,585.30. The BSE midcap index rose 0.3 percent and smallcap index added 0.4 percent.

The biggest Nifty gainers were Nestle India, Tata Consumer, Titan Company, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, while losers included HDFC Life, Shriram Finance, Sun Pharma, Jio Financial and Eternal.

Except PSU Bank which ended lower by 0.4 percent, all other sectoral indices closed in the green with auto, bank, consumer durable, realty FMCG, oil &amp; gas up 0.5-1.7 percent.

In stock-specific action, KEI Industries' shares slipped 5 percent despite Q2 profit growth, Oberoi Realty shares rose 5 percent as Q2 profit increased nearly 30 percent, Axis Bank shares added over 2 percent after earnings, HDFC Life shares fell 2 percent, and Angel One shares gained despite a drop in profit.

BLS International shares added 16 percent on winning a three-year contract from Ministry of External Affairs, DB Corp shares gained 1.5 percenton profit growth, Ashok Leyland shares added one percent on bagging bus order from Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertaking, Nestle India shares surged 4.5 percent despite Q2 profit drop, and Eternal shares fell by over 3 percent following September quarter results.

After showing a sustainable upmove on Wednesday, Nifty witnessed an excellent upside breakout on Thursday and closed the day higher by 261 points. After opening with an upside gap of 71 points, the market zoomed up in the early to mid-part of the session without showing any reasonable dip. However, minor consolidation was seen towards the end near 25600 levels and Nifty finally closed near the highs.

A long bull candle has been formed on the daily chart, that has surpassed the crucial overhead resistance of 25400-25500 levels (down sloping trend line as per daily/weekly chart). Previous swing high of 25669 of early July is now on edge of breakout. Larger degree bullish pattern like higher tops and bottoms is intact on the weekly chart and Nifty is now in line with the new higher top formation of the sequence.

The underlying trend of Nifty continues to be positive and the market is likely to move up further in the short term. A sustainable move above 25600-25700 levels could pull Nifty towards the next upside target of around 26000-26200 levels in the near term.

Sectoral indices were mostly in the green, with the Nifty FMCG index leading gains, rising over 2 percent, followed by Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Auto, which added around 1.5 and 1.3 percent respectively. Financial stocks also supported the rally, as Nifty Private Bank climbed 1.48 percent and Nifty Financial Services gained 0.7 percent, while the Nifty Realty index was up 1.9 percent.

However, PSU banks bucked the trend, slipping 0.44 percent, while other sectors such as IT, Pharma, and Metal posted modest advances.

The session's gains were broad-based, led by Realty, Auto, FMCG, and Private Banking stocks. Sentiment was further lifted by expectations of a Q3FY26 demand revival, early signs of FII inflows, supported by dovish commentary from the US Fed, and a softer dollar index.

"The recent appreciation of the INR also reinforced the positive undertone. While near-term momentum remains favourable, sustained performance will depend on signs of earnings growth from ongoing corporate results and developments in global trade," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments.

On the technical front, the index also broke out above a major falling trend line that connects all key tops since the previous record high of 26,277, indicating the potential for further upside in the coming sessions.

On the derivatives front, fresh long positions are being built, reinforcing the bullish sentiment. Momentum indicators and oscillators continue to signal a buy on both daily and weekly charts. "Overall, the trend remains positive, with Nifty likely to head towards 25,800–26,000 levels in the short term, while support has now shifted higher to around 25,420," said Nilesh Jain, Head – Technical and Derivatives Research Analyst (Equity Research), Centrum Broking.

Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, noted "latest comments from the US administration indicate reduction in the India-US trade tensions and points to the possibility of a US-India trade deal in the next few weeks. China’s tough actions regarding the rare earth magnets have hit the US hard and, therefore, the US is keen on striking a deal with India with both countries making some concessions."

5) Rupee gains: The rupee appreciated 40 paise to 87.68 against the US dollar in early trade, supported by central bank intervention, a softer dollar index, positive domestic equities and lower crude prices, forex traders said.

Technical view

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said the Nifty’s close near the 25,330 level, which had been acting as a resistance, indicates strength.

"A sustained move above this region opens the possibility of testing 25,460 in the near term. However, low momentum remains a concern. Immediate support is seen near 25,260," he said.

Dalal Street extended its bullish momentum to the second session on October 16, as benchmark indices Nifty 50 and Sensex kicked off the session with gains. Investors were optimistic around further rate cuts from the U.S. Federal Reserve, following dovish commentary from Chair Jerome Powell.

At 09:19 am, the Sensex was up 322.25 points or 0.39 percent at 82,927.68, and the Nifty was up 85.85 points or 0.34 percent at 25,409.40. About 1736 shares advanced, 782 shares declined, and 132 shares unchanged.

At the opening bell, sectoral indices showed a mixed trend. Gains were led by Nifty Private Bank and Nifty PSU Bank, which rose 0.86 percent and 0.60 percent, respectively. Realty, Auto, and Consumer Durables also opened higher, while IT and Metal saw mild declines.

Most other sectors, including FMCG, Healthcare, and Financial Services, were trading in the green, indicating a broadly positive market sentiment in early trade.

Analysts are also optimistic that the India-U.S. trade deal may come to fruition soon. The latest comments from the U.S. administration indicate reduction in the India-U.S. trade tensions and points to the possibility of a U.S.-India trade deal in the next few weeks.

"China’s tough actions regarding the rare earth magnets have hit the US hard and, therefore, the US is keen on striking a deal with India with both countries making some concessions," noted VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments.

He added that India’s exports and jobs in labour intensive areas like textiles, gems and jewellery and leather products have been hit hard. In this context, a U.S.-India trade deal will be a big boost to the markets.

Nifty opens above 25,400, Sensex extends bullish momentum as banking stocks lead early gains

Dalal Street extended its bullish momentum to the second session on October 16, as benchmark indices Nifty 50 and Sensex kicked off the session with gains. Investors were optimistic around further rate cuts from the U.S. Federal Reserve, following dovish commentary from Chair Jerome Powell.

At 09:19 am, the Sensex was up 322.25 points or 0.39 percent at 82,927.68, and the Nifty was up 85.85 points or 0.34 percent at 25,409.40. About 1736 shares advanced, 782 shares declined, and 132 shares unchanged.

At the opening bell, sectoral indices showed a mixed trend. Gains were led by Nifty Private Bank and Nifty PSU Bank, which rose 0.86 percent and 0.60 percent, respectively. Realty, Auto, and Consumer Durables also opened higher, while IT and Metal saw mild declines.

Most other sectors, including FMCG, Healthcare, and Financial Services, were trading in the green, indicating a broadly positive market sentiment in early trade.

Analysts are also optimistic that the India-U.S. trade deal may come to fruition soon. The latest comments from the U.S. administration indicate reduction in the India-U.S. trade tensions and points to the possibility of a U.S.-India trade deal in the next few weeks.

&quot;China’s tough actions regarding the rare earth magnets have hit the US hard and, therefore, the US is keen on striking a deal with India with both countries making some concessions,&quot; noted VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments.

He added that India’s exports and jobs in labour intensive areas like textiles, gems and jewellery and leather products have been hit hard. In this context, a U.S.-India trade deal will be a big boost to the markets.
