Shares of fertiliser, metal and oil marketing companies (OMCs) declined up to 4 percent in Thursday’s trade amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the West Asia region.

Oil marketing companies came under pressure as escalating tensions in the region pushed crude oil prices sharply higher, raising concerns over a squeeze in refining and marketing margins.

Shares of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation fell up to 2.74 percent to Rs 326.35 per share on the NSE. Bharat Petroleum Corporation declined up to 1 percent to Rs 279, while Indian Oil Corporation dropped up to 1 percent to Rs 134.50.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, surged 7 percent to $107.29 per barrel.

Higher oil prices are negative for India, the world's ​third-largest crude importer, as they could widen the fiscal deficit, stoke inflation ​and weigh on growth.

Eternal shares settled 1.92 percent lower at Rs 231.99 per share on the NSE as the crisis has impacted restaurant operators, which depend heavily on LPG for kitchen operations. Food delivery platforms have been affected as restaurant partners face disruptions, potentially affecting order fulfilment.

Paint stocks are also facing margin pressure as rising crude oil prices increase raw material costs for petro-based inputs. Asian Paints settled up to 2.5 percent lower at Rs 2,170.40 per share on the NSE.

In the metals space, copper and other industrial metals declined after US President Donald Trump reiterated a threat to strike Iran’s civilian infrastructure if negotiations fail to end the ongoing conflict.

Trump said the US could strike Iran “extremely hard” over the next two to three weeks and may target key infrastructure, including power plants. While he indicated that the military operation was close to completion, concerns over further escalation weighed on metals such as copper, aluminium and zinc.

Metal stocks faced pressure amid fears of supply disruptions from West Asia and the possibility of an oil shock impacting global demand.

Shares of APL Apollo Tubes and Hindustan Copper declined between 1 and 2 percent.

Among fertiliser stocks, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers slipped up to 1 percent, while Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore fell up to 1.5 percent.

Rising energy costs are seen increasing fertiliser production expenses, which may add to broader inflationary pressures.

However, India’s diversified fertiliser import sources are expected to provide some cushion against potential supply disruptions.

Tyre stocks also declined. JK Tyre stock plunged 1.35 percent, CEAT dropped up to 1 percent, and Apollo Tyres fell 1.82 percent. Tyre companies rely heavily on crude-based synthetic rubber and petrochemical inputs. Higher oil prices also raise logistics and transportation costs, compounding pressure on profitability.

Gold and Silver exchange-traded funds (ETFs) declined up to 4 percent on Thursday, tracking a fall in precious metal prices.

At 12:45 pm, Nippon India Silver ETF fell 4.04 percent, while Tata Silver Exchange Traded Fund slipped 4.11 percent.

Among gold ETFs, Tata Gold ETF declined 2.01 percent, Nippon India ETF Gold BeeS was down 2.22 percent, and ICICI Prudential Gold ETF fell 2.16 percent.

Gold prices plunged Rs 6,004 to Rs 1.47 lakh per 10 grams in futures trade on Thursday amid intensified geopolitical tensions in West Asia that boosted the US dollar and dampened the investors' sentiment.

Snapping a four-day winning streak, the yellow metal for the June delivery plunged Rs 6,004, or 3.91 percent, to Rs 1,47,704 per 10 grams on the Multi Commodity Exchange.

Analysts said precious metal prices declined as the US dollar rebounded following remarks by President Donald Trump indicating a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Gold prices declined on Thursday, ending a four-day gain, as the US dollar rebounded after President Donald Trump warned that the military campaign in Iran could continue with more intense action over the next two to three weeks, Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at IndusInd Securities, said.

In the international markets, Comex gold futures for the June contract also ended a four-day rally, depreciating USD 194.70, or 4.05 percent, to USD 4,618.40 per ounce.

In an address from the White House, President Donald Trump said Washington's core strategic objectives in Iran were nearing completion. However, he added that the US would hit Iran &quot;extremely hard&quot; for the next two to three weeks.

Meanwhile, Trump offered no timeline to the end of the war on Iran and no solution to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz that has crippled global financial markets.

Jigar Trivedi said this stance by the US President had strengthened the US dollar, adding that the greenback has recently emerged as a safe-haven asset, putting pressure on dollar-denominated precious metals.

Crude oil prices also resumed their advance, reinforcing inflation concerns and expectations of tighter monetary policy.

Shares of Hindustan Zinc dropped more than 3 percent to Rs 506.9 per share. The company is the country’s largest silver producer. Shares of Vedanta, the promoter of Hindustan Zinc, also declined up to 2 percent.

Following the remarks, the 10-year US Treasury yield and the dollar index moved higher, putting pressure on gold prices.

Meanwhile, Brent crude oil prices surged more than 6 percent on concerns over supply after indications of continued strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.

Higher interest rates typically weigh on gold as they increase the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding asset.

Pharma shares declined up to 4 percent in Thursday’s trade after reports that the administration of US president Donald Trump may announce tariffs on drugmakers that have not entered into agreements to ensure lower prices in the United States.

Shares of Biocon, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries and Divi's Laboratories were among the major losers.

The Nifty Pharma index extended losses for the fourth consecutive session, falling more than 5 percent, with all its 20 constituents trading in the red.

In intraday trade, Biocon declined up to 4 percent. Ipca Laboratories fell 3.83 percent, while Torrent Pharmaceuticals dropped 3.67 percent.

Shares of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries were down over 3 percent, while Divi's Laboratories fell more than 2 percent.

According to reports, the US has been considering a 100 percent tariff on imported branded and patented medicines. Trump has for months indicated tariffs on pharmaceutical companies, ranging from 100 percent to 200 percent, aimed at pushing manufacturing back to the US and reducing drug prices.

Several global drugmakers, including Pfizer Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company, have entered into agreements with the White House, securing a three-year relief from such levies.

The proposed tariffs are linked to an investigation under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. Companies without agreements or ongoing negotiations with the administration may face tariffs of up to 100 percent, according to sources.

The pharmaceutical sector had earlier been spared from global levies imposed in 2025 after the administration reached individual agreements with more than a dozen companies.

Sun Pharma, Divi's Lab, other pharma shares fall up to 4% as Trump may impose 100% tariffs on global drugmakers

Hero MotoCorp share price shed more than 2 percent in the opening trade on April 2 despite the company announced better sales numbers for the month of March and acquiring stake in an associate company.

At 09:17am Hero MotoCorp was quoting at Rs 5,001.75, down Rs 122.40, or 2.39 percent, on the BSE.

The company has completed the acquisition of 2,68,219 Series E compulsorily convertible preference shares in Euler Motors for an aggregate consideration of ₹210 crore. Following the transaction, Hero MotoCorp holds a 36.67% stake in Euler Motors on a fully diluted basis.

On the operational front, the company reported robust performance for March 2026, with dispatches rising 8.8% year-on-year to 5,98,198 units, compared to 5,49,604 units in the same period last year. Retail momentum remained strong, with VAHAN registrations at 5,42,436 units, marking a 24% growth.

Domestic sales stood at 5,52,505 units, while exports grew 15.62% year-on-year to 45,693 units. The export segment also recorded an all-time high growth of around 40% in FY26.

In the previous trading session, the stock closed at ₹5,124.15, up ₹63.80 or 1.26%. The stock has touched a 52-week high of ₹6,390 and a low of ₹3,322.60, and is currently trading 19.81% below its high and 54.22% above its low.

The company’s market capitalisation stands at ₹1.03 lakh crore.

Hero MotoCorp shares slip 2% despite strong March sales

Lupin share price slipped 2.5 percent in the opening trade on April 2 after the company announced that its subsidiary will acquire a minority stake in Multicare Pharmaceuticals Philippines, Inc. (MPPI).

At 09:18am, Lupin was quoting at Rs 2,216.20, down Rs 57.40, or 2.52 percent, on the BSE.

In an exchange filing, the company said its wholly owned subsidiary, Nanomi B.V., Netherlands, has entered into definitive agreements to acquire 11,794,497 shares—representing a 43.38% stake—in MPPI from existing shareholders. The acquisition, valued at up to $39.6 million, is expected to be completed by the end of May 2026, subject to closing conditions.

In a separate development, the company informed that Nanomi has completed the full acquisition of VISUfarma B.V., Netherlands. Consequently, VISUfarma and its subsidiaries have become wholly owned subsidiaries of Nanomi effective April 1, 2026.
