Indian IT stocks have been navigating a challenging environment as sector dynamics evolve, said Kalp Jain, Research Analyst at INVasset PMS. He noted that the recent announcement of <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/information-technology/techies-make-merry-infosys-hikes-entry-level-salaries-offers-up-to-rs-21-lakh-for-graduates-in-specialised-roles-13742171.html">Infosys hiking entry-level salaries</a> underscores the intensifying competition for digital talent.

“This move reflects broader attempts by firms to attract highly skilled professionals in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud and advanced engineering, where demand continues to grow,” he added.

However, the analyst added that the overall salary growth in the IT sector appears to be moderating, with average increments slated to ease slightly compared with recent years as companies balance cost pressures and margin discipline with talent retention. But wages and benefits have continued to rise in targeted areas, contributing to higher operating costs even as revenue growth slows in some segments.

“For IT stocks, the path forward may hinge on how effectively companies manage talent costs while maintaining competitive pricing, expanding service offerings and securing robust deal pipelines. Because wage structures remain a key cost component, investor focus will be on whether revenue and margin expansion can offset any near-term pressure from higher payroll expenses,” he concluded.

Siddharth Maurya, Founder &amp; Managing Director at Vibhavangal Anukulakara, however felt that hikes in salaries will not meaningfully alter sector valuations anytime soon. He said that Indian IT stocks are toggling between a volatile mix of earnings momentum, global demand, and talent costs.

“Investors continue to pay more attention to deal pipelines, margins, demand from key markets such as the U.S., and broader macro cues. IT stocks are likely to respond more to signals related to global demand and earnings outlook than to compensation changes,” he added.

Amid an expected acceleration in AI-led demand globally, Infosys is proactively positioning its workforce to be AI-ready, said Dhanshree Jadhav, Analyst – Technology Services, Choice Institutional Equities. She added that the salary hikes are aimed at curbing attrition and enhancing Infosys’ ability to attract high-quality freshers, especially at a time when entry-level salaries across Indian IT companies have remained largely stagnant, reducing their competitiveness versus start-ups.

"We believe the global IT industry is at an inflection point where strong sustained growth will increasingly be driven by upfront investments in talent and AI-led infrastructure to stay ahead of the curve," she said.

The stocks had earlier declined this week after the Donald Trump-led US administration said it was <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/coforge-tech-mahindra-other-it-shares-fall-up-to-1-as-us-scraps-h-1b-lottery-13740615.html">replacing its longstanding lottery system for H-1B work visas</a> with a new approach that prioritises skilled, higher-paid foreign workers.

The shares of the NBFC dropped to Rs 957.30 apiece in the morning of Friday. This comes after the stock surged 16 percent in six sessions to hit a fresh 52-week high of Rs 983.7 per share on Wednesday.
<h3><strong>Shriram Finance-MUFG deal:</strong></h3>
Shriram Finance on December 19 announced that MUFG Bank will acquire 20 percent stake in the NBFC for Rs 39,600 crore ($4.4 billion) through preferential allotment of equity shares. This marks the largest FDI in India's financial sector.

The floor price for the preferential issue was set at Rs 840.83 per share, with MUFG set to acquire 47.11 crore equity shares.

Shriram, India's second-biggest non-bank lender after Bajaj Finance Ltd., operates businesses across urban and rural areas, focusing on loans for commercial vehicles, tractors and passenger cars.

Brokerages expect the deal to strengthen Shriram Finance’s balance sheet, bolster growth prospects and potentially pave the way for a credit rating upgrade. They have raised target prices and remain broadly positive on the long-term outlook, despite near-term earnings dilution from the expanded equity base.
<h3><strong>MUFG won't increase stake in Shriram Finance above 20%:</strong></h3>
While speaking at a joint press conference with the NBFC’s management earlier this week, Yasushi Itagaki, senior managing corporate executive and Group COO-I at MUFG, said that the J<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/will-shriram-finance-apply-to-become-a-bank-here-s-what-top-management-said-after-mufg-deal-13737198.html">apanese financial company is happy with its status as a “significant minority stakeholder”</a> in Shriram Finance. “Right now, we have no intention of going above 20 percent,” he added.

The executive from the Japanese conglomerate added that it has "no interest in investing in any other arms of Shriram Group". "We respect local branding and names, so Shriram Finance's name will remain," he further said.

Umesh Revankar, Executive Vice Chairman of Shriram Finance, said that the company becoming a bank is not something that the management sees happening right now.

"Getting a banking license is not under discussion at all. We prefer to remain where we are. Since India is growing very fast, it gives us a large opportunity to do retail lending and there is enough scope to expand with whatever we have built," he said, adding that no change is expected structurally in the way they manage business after the said stake acquisition by MUFG is completed.

Revankar believes there is enough scope and opportunity for Shriram Finance to remain as an NBFC and keep growing. "Being an NBFC gives you the advantage of customisation. It is better to remain in this particular structure for as long as possible," he added.

Shriram Finance shares have gained around 11 percent in the past five days, and over 12 percent in the past one month. The stock is up around 37 percent in the past six months.

Its P/E ratio currently stands at 19.09.

Railway-linked shares extended their rally on Friday, rising up to 12 percent, as the revised passenger train fares came into effect from today.

Shares of <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/miscellaneous/railvikasnigam/RVN">Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd</a> (RVNL), Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/miscellaneous/irctc-indianrailwaycateringtourismcorp/IRC">Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation</a> (IRCTC) and RailTel were among the top gainers in the sector.

RVNL led the rally, climbing as much as 12.58 percent to Rs 389.20 on the NSE, at around 12 p.m. IRFC rose 9.27 percent to Rs 132.75, while IRCTC gained 4.59 percent to Rs 710.85. Jupiter Wagons was up 2.85 percent at Rs 350.30.

The government’s revised passenger train fares came into effect from Friday, marking the second fare hike this year. The Indian Railways had earlier announced that the new fare structure would be effective from December 26 and is expected to generate additional revenue of about Rs 600 crore in 2025-26.

Market participants said the fare hike is being seen as a positive for the sector as it improves the financial position of the Railways, which could support higher spending on infrastructure, wagons and related services.

Shravan Shetty, Managing Director of Primus Partners, said the gains were linked to the fare hike announcement and its potential impact on railway finances.

"While railway stocks are not directly impacted by fare revisions, an improvement in the financial health of Indian Railways could accelerate capital expenditure and support revenue growth for wagon and infrastructure players," Shetty said.

He added that many railway stocks had declined on a year-to-date basis and the recent developments are helping them recover.

Analysts said investors are also positioning ahead of the budgetary allocations for the sector in the upcoming Union Budget 2026-27.

Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, said the rally has largely been driven by Budget-related expectations.

He said the initial trigger was the conversion of a preferential issue by the promoter of Jupiter Wagons, which led to a sharp rise in the stock and subsequently spilled over to other railway engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies.

Agrawal said SBI Securities prefers wagon-related businesses and sees the current rally as an opportunity to book profits in railway EPC stocks such as IRCON, RITES and RVNL.

"Any further rise ahead of the Budget should be utilised for profit booking," he said.

The Indian Railways has raised passenger fares by up to 2 paise per km. An official statement on Thursday said Sleeper, AC and non-AC classes will see a one paise per km increase for non-mail or non-express trains, while Mail or Express fares will go up by 2 paise per km.

Reports said passenger fares could see further increases going ahead.

Residents residing near Tata Steel's plants in Netherlands, as represented by Stichting Frisse Wind (SFW), have alleged that the company is liable for the damages caused by its operations in Velsen-Noord. These damages most importantly include the emissions of hazardous or harmful substances. They seek a compensation of euro 1.4 billion (over Rs 14,810 crore) for the “increased susceptibility to various health issues and the loss of enjoyment of homes, as the average home value in the region demonstrably lags behind that of comparable regions”.

SFW served a writ of summons to the two subsidiaries for proceedings at the District Court North Holland in Haarlem. The proceedings concern a collective action under the Dutch Act on Collective Settlement of Mass Claims (WAMCA).

The company said that SFW has provided no supporting evidence for the claim, making it unsubstantiated and speculative. It rejects the claims being without any basis.

“TSN is fully prepared to defend against the claim. In our assessment, SFW faces considerable challenges regarding both admissibility and the merits of its case. Although, TSN is yet to receive the exhibits on which SFW intends to rely, TSN has already identified substantial grounds for defence,” the company said.

It added that health and clean-living environment remain its key priorities, just like the local residents and stakeholders. “Through substantial investments outlined in Roadmap+, TSN has achieved significant improvements in areas of concern for the neighbouring community over the past five years. Additionally, TSN consistently ranks among the leading global blast furnace-based steel producers in terms of CO2 efficiency, with performance metrics well below both European and global averages,” it further said.

Tata Steel shares have gained around 5 percent in the past six months, and around 23 percent in 2025 so far. The stock jumped over 170 percent in the past five years.

Its P/E ratio currently stands at around 52.

The shares of Tata Steel dropped more than 1 percent on December 26 after the company announced that its Dutch subsidiaries are facing proceedings over alleged damages caused by hazardous emissions in Netherlands.

Hindustan Zinc shares touched a fresh 52-week high on Friday as silver prices extended their record run in the domestic and global markets.

The stock opened with a gap-up of 3.22 percent and climbed to an intraday high of Rs 646.50 per share on the NSE, which also marked its 52-week high.

The stock has been gaining for the last four sessions. According to BSE Analytics, <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/metals-non-ferrous/hindustanzinc/HZ">Hindustan Zinc</a> has risen 35.87 percent over the past 30 days.

The rally in the stock comes amid a sharp rise in silver prices. Extending its gains for the fifth straight session, silver futures on Friday surged Rs 8,951 to hit a fresh record high of Rs 2,32,741 per kg, after the metal crossed the USD 75-per-ounce mark in the global market.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver futures for the March 2026 contract jumped Rs 8,951, or 4 percent, to an all-time high of Rs 2,32,741 per kg. The contract has gained Rs 29,176, or 14.33 percent, since December 18.

Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities said geopolitical tensions, including the US blockade of Venezuelan crude shipments, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Washington’s recent military strike against ISIS in Nigeria, have supported safe-haven demand for bullion.

Investors continue to price in two quarter-point rate cuts by the Federal Reserve next year as inflation cools and labour market conditions soften, even as policymakers remain divided on the outlook.
