The stock settled at Rs 2,715 apiece on the NSE, up 0.92 percent. During the day, it touched a high of Rs 2,784.80, up 3.52 percent. The scrip has risen for the last two trading sessions.

Motilal Oswal said Ajanta Pharma’s partnership with Biocon to source the weight-loss drug semaglutide is a meaningful step towards introducing newer therapies and securing market share.

The brokerage estimates potential annualised sales from semaglutide in Asia and Africa at USD 25–30 million from the second half of FY28, with EBITDA margins of 50–55 percent.

It expects Ajanta Pharma’s overall revenue and profit to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 11 percent and 16 percent, respectively, over FY26–28.

Motilal Oswal reiterated its “buy” rating on the stock and maintained a target price of Rs 3,145, implying an upside of about 17 percent.

The company’s surplus cash position provides enough cushion to acquire products that complement its branded generics portfolio. In fact, the company has meaningfully scaled its acquired brands over the past 12 months, the brokerage said.

In emerging markets, AJP is pursuing an asset-light, marketing-led model and will source semaglutide from Biocon under an in-licensing arrangement. The company has exclusive or semi-exclusive marketing rights across 23 countries in Africa and three countries in the Middle East and Central Asia. With patents expiring in Mar’26 and approvals expected between late 2026 and early 2027, this structure enables AJP to capture upside without assuming manufacturing risk, it added.

<h3><strong>Hopes for strong December auto sales data:</strong></h3>
Analysts expect the automakers to post strong auto sales for the month of December. Nuvama Wealth Management said that these firms will continue to benefit from lower GST, which has led to better demand, Informist reported.

The brokerage expects double-digit year-on-year growth in sales volumes across categories for the month, it added.

"Sales volumes are likely to be driven by continued positive customer sentiments spurred by better affordability (courtesy GST cuts), new products, interest rate cuts and adequate finance availability despite some pressure on rural sentiments due to a drop in retail crop prices…Furthermore, we reckon exports shall rise in double digits led by growth in Asia, Africa, and Latin America," the domestic brokerage further said, as quoted by Informist.

"The auto sales numbers expected in two days will give an indication of the sustainability of the consumption boom in the economy. This is significant from the economic growth perspective, too," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments.
<h3><strong>Strong IIP data:</strong></h3>
The rise in the auto stocks may have also bee driven by <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/industrial-output-rebounds-to-over-two-year-high-of-6-7-in-november-13746973.html">strong IIP numbers</a>. India’s industrial production rebounded sharply in November, with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) rising 6.7 percent—a 25-month high—from just 0.5 percent in October, data released on December 29 showed.

The recovery was broad-based, with strong improvement across all three major sectors. Manufacturing, which accounts for over 75 percent of the index, accelerated to an over two-year high of 8 percent, up from 2 percent in the previous month, providing the biggest boost to headline growth.

"Sector-wise, while auto stocks gained on robust IIP data," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments.
<h3><strong>Top gainers on the auto index:</strong></h3>
<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/auto-23-wheelers/heromotocorp/HHM">Hero MotoCorp</a> shares emerged as the top gainer on the index, jumping more than 2 percent to snap a three-session gaining streak. Sona BLW Precision Forgings, Bosch and UNO Minda shares closed in the green with marginal gains. Bucking the trend, Royal Enfield-maker <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/auto-lcvshcvs/eichermotors/EM">Eicher Motors</a>, Exide Industries and Tube Investments of India shares fell more than 1 percent each.

Defence shares extended their decline for a third straight session on Tuesday, with the Nifty Defence index falling 1.5 percent amid broad-based selling in the sector, even as analysts remain positive on the medium-term outlook following recent approvals by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC).

The Nifty Defence index has now declined over 2 percent in the last three sessions. In Tuesday’s trade, 16 of the 18 constituents of the index were trading in the red.

Shares of <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/ship-building/mazagondockshipbuilders/MDS01">Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders</a> led the losses, slipping up to 4 percent. <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/chemicals/solarindustriesindia/SII04">Solar Industries India</a> declined 3.5 percent, while Data Patterns (India) fell around 3 percent.

The decline comes amid profit booking, despite the DAC recently approving procurement proposals worth over Rs 79,000 crore, covering upgrades, overhauls and fresh procurement across key defence platforms.

PL Capital noted that over the past few months, the DAC has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for proposals aggregating around Rs 3.30 lakh crore across the Army, Navy and Air Force. These span missiles and air defence systems, electronic warfare and sensors, unmanned and autonomous systems, naval platforms, mobility solutions, and lifecycle upgrades and maintenance.

The approvals provide strong multi-year order visibility and support higher localisation and private sector participation.

"We believe these AoNs provide strong multi-year order visibility, support higher localisation and private-sector participation, and improve execution and earnings visibility for domestic defence manufacturers, particularly across missiles, electronics, unmanned systems, naval shipbuilding and sustainment services," it said.

Defence shares extended their decline for a third straight session on Tuesday, with the Nifty Defence index falling 1.5 percent amid broad-based selling in the sector, even as analysts remain positive on the medium-term outlook following recent approvals by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC).

The Nifty Defence index has now declined over 2 percent in the last three sessions. In Tuesday’s trade, 16 of the 18 constituents of the index were trading in the red.

Shares of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders led the losses, slipping up to 4 percent. Solar Industries India declined 3.5 percent, while Data Patterns (India) fell around 3 percent.

The decline comes amid profit booking, despite the DAC recently approving procurement proposals worth over Rs 79,000 crore, covering upgrades, overhauls and fresh procurement across key defence platforms.

PL Capital noted that over the past few months, the DAC has accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for proposals aggregating around Rs 3.30 lakh crore across the Army, Navy and Air Force. These span missiles and air defence systems, electronic warfare and sensors, unmanned and autonomous systems, naval platforms, mobility solutions, and lifecycle upgrades and maintenance.

The approvals provide strong multi-year order visibility and support higher localisation and private sector participation.
