Market experts said the 25,400–25,600 zone is expected to act as an immediate hurdle for the Nifty.

Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President (Research), Religare Broking, said the Nifty has approached a crucial support zone near its long-term moving average.

"Following this decline, the Nifty has moved close to its 200 DEMA, placed around the 25,150 level. A brief pause or rebound cannot be ruled out at these levels; however, any recovery will largely depend on the performance of banking and IT stocks, which have shown relatively better resilience so far," Mishra said.

He added that in case of a rebound, the 25,400–25,600 zone is likely to act as an immediate resistance, while a decisive break below the long-term moving average could lead to further downside towards the 24,900 level. He advised investors to keep position sizes in check and trade in line with the prevailing trend.

Sudeep Shah, Head – Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, said the benchmark index witnessed a sharp selloff, with selling pressure dominating throughout the session.

With this decline, the Nifty has corrected over 4 percent in just 10 trading sessions, making it one of the fastest short-term declines in recent months," Shah said.

He noted that the index is hovering near its 200-day exponential moving average, a key long-term support level tracked by traders and institutional investors. The daily RSI has dropped to 29.27, its weakest reading since March 2025, indicating oversold conditions along with strong downward momentum.

"Going ahead, the 25,370–25,400 zone will act as immediate resistance. As long as the index trades below 25,400, overall sentiment is likely to remain weak. The next support is seen at 25,080, and a break below this level could drag the index towards 24,900 in the short term," Shah added.

On the banking front, the Bank Nifty also ended lower, extending the weakness seen in the broader market. The index slipped below its 20-day EMA, signalling loss of short-term momentum after showing resilience in recent sessions.

According to Shah, the immediate support for Bank Nifty is placed in the 59,000–58,900 zone. A breach below this range could lead to further downside, while the 59,900–60,000 band is expected to act as a key resistance level in the near term.

Realty dived 5.21 per cent, services tanked 2.89 per cent, capital goods (2.76 per cent), consumer discretionary (2.73 per cent), consumer durables (2.71 per cent), telecommunication (2.42 per cent), auto (2.36 per cent) and power (2.23 per cent).

The Nifty 50 decisively broke the consolidation of the last six sessions on the downside and fell close to its 200-day EMA (Exponential Moving Average) with above-average volumes, as bears tightened their control over the market. The index recorded its biggest single-day fall since May 2025 and closed at a more than three-month low with a 1.38 percent loss, as a spike in the VIX towards the 13 level pushed bulls into a discomfort zone ahead of the Union Budget scheduled on February 1.

The Nifty 50 has shed more than 1,100 points from its record high of 26,373 recorded on January 5. After severe selling pressure, bulls may attempt to drive the market higher; however, those gains are unlikely to sustain given the strong bearish technical and momentum indicators. The Nifty 50 has reached a crucial zone near the 200-day EMA (25,162). If this level is decisively broken, 25,000–24,800 (psychological support and the 78.6 percent Fibonacci retracement of the August 2025 low to the January 2026 high) will be the levels to watch. In case of a pullback, 25,600 (near the high of today’s candle) may act as resistance, according to experts.

The Nifty 50 opened flat and remained below the previous day’s close throughout the session. The index extended its fall as the day progressed and hit an intraday low of 25,171 before finishing the session at 25,233 (the lowest closing level since October 14, 2025), down 353 points or 1.38 percent — the biggest single-day fall since May 13 last year.

The index formed a long bearish candle on the daily charts, accompanied by further weakening momentum indicators, indicating a sell signal. The RSI dropped to 29.27, nearing the oversold zone, while the MACD maintained a bearish crossover below the zero line, with the histogram weakening further.

“The overall market structure remains weak, with the MACD signaling a sell crossover on both the daily and weekly timeframes,” said Nilesh Jain, Head – Technical and Derivatives Research Analyst (Equity Research) at Centrum Broking.

According to him, although a short-term pullback cannot be ruled out, the bearish setup will remain intact unless the index decisively moves back above 25,580.

“On the downside, a break below 25,100 could accelerate the fall towards the 24,800 level,” he added.

Further adding to the cautious undertone, India VIX jumped 7.63 percent to 12.73 — the highest closing level since November 24 last year — indicating heightened market uncertainty. The VIX has now climbed above all key moving averages, signaling increased risk for bulls.

Monthly options data suggest that 25,000 is the immediate support for the Nifty, with resistance at 25,500. The maximum Call open interest was placed at the 26,000 strike, followed by the 25,500 and 25,600 strikes, with maximum Call writing at the 25,500, 25,400, and 25,600 strikes. On the Put side, the 25,500 strike holds the maximum open interest, followed by the 24,500 and 26,000 strikes, with maximum Put writing at the 25,000, 24,500, and 24,900 strikes.

<strong>Bank Nifty</strong>

The Bank Nifty also formed a long red candle on the daily timeframe, falling below the 59,500 support level to close at 59,404, down 487 points or 0.81 percent, though it outperformed the benchmark Nifty 50.

With today’s correction, the index slipped below short-term moving averages and the midline of the Bollinger Bands with above-average volumes, signaling entry into bearish momentum. The RSI declined to 48.82 with a negative crossover, while the MACD remained below the reference line with a weakening histogram.

The next support for the banking index is placed at 59,000 (near the 50-day EMA), below which bears could gain further strength.

“Momentum indicators also signal caution, as the RSI is downward sloping and forming a lower top with a bearish crossover, suggesting a shift in sentiment. Immediate support is placed at 59,000, while resistance stands at 59,800,” said Vatsal Bhuva, Technical Analyst at LKP Securities.

A bullish view should be considered only on a sustained close above 60,000; until then, a cautious approach is advised.

Bears resumed control as bulls were increasingly marginalised amid ongoing transatlantic trade tensions. Supports looked fragile as the Nifty kept breaking them on the back of strong institutional selling.

Indicators remained in a bearish crossover and are approaching the oversold zone. On the daily chart, the index appears to be drifting towards the 200-DMA. Immediate support is seen around 25,100–25,150. If this level holds, a decent pullback can be expected.

On the weekly expiry day, Nifty began on a negative note and as prices broke below key support levels, a cascading sell-off ensued, leading to sharp declines through the session. Eventually, Nifty ended the day with a loss of 1.38%, closing tad above the 25200 mark.

Over the last 15 days, Nifty has erased more than 1,100 points and in the process has broken multiple key support levels, indicating that weakness may persist in the near term. On the daily chart, prices have slipped below the November swing low and also closed below the golden retracement level (61.8%) of the entire upmove from the September swing low near 24600. On the indicators front, the RSI Smoothened has entered the oversold zone below 25 for the first time since August; however, considering the broad-based nature of the sell-off, attempting to catch the bottom may be premature.

From a levels perspective, prices are now at a knocking distance of the long-term 200-DSMA, with 25100–25000 emerging as a crucial support zone for the coming sessions. On the flip side, given the sharpness of the recent decline, identifying a precise resistance zone is challenging; nevertheless, the 25500–25600 region is likely to act as a stiff hurdle.

While oscillators are deeply oversold and prices have approached long-term support levels ahead of the key Budget session, we would prefer to remain cautious and not rush to call a bottom until clear reversal signals or a base formation emerge.

Outlook for January 21

Bears resumed control as bulls were increasingly marginalised amid ongoing transatlantic trade tensions. Supports looked fragile as the Nifty kept breaking them on the back of strong institutional selling.

Indicators remained in a bearish crossover and are approaching the oversold zone. On the daily chart, the index appears to be drifting towards the 200-DMA. Immediate support is seen around 25,100–25,150. If this level holds, a decent pullback can be expected.

On the weekly expiry day, Nifty began on a negative note and as prices broke below key support levels, a cascading sell-off ensued, leading to sharp declines through the session. Eventually, Nifty ended the day with a loss of 1.38%, closing tad above the 25200 mark.

Over the last 15 days, Nifty has erased more than 1,100 points and in the process has broken multiple key support levels, indicating that weakness may persist in the near term. On the daily chart, prices have slipped below the November swing low and also closed below the golden retracement level (61.8%) of the entire upmove from the September swing low near 24600. On the indicators front, the RSI Smoothened has entered the oversold zone below 25 for the first time since August; however, considering the broad-based nature of the sell-off, attempting to catch the bottom may be premature.

From a levels perspective, prices are now at a knocking distance of the long-term 200-DSMA, with 25100–25000 emerging as a crucial support zone for the coming sessions. On the flip side, given the sharpness of the recent decline, identifying a precise resistance zone is challenging; nevertheless, the 25500–25600 region is likely to act as a stiff hurdle.

While oscillators are deeply oversold and prices have approached long-term support levels ahead of the key Budget session, we would prefer to remain cautious and not rush to call a bottom until clear reversal signals or a base formation emerge.

Nifty 50 has declined nearly 1,100 points (more than 4 percent) from its lifetime high of 26,373.2, which it had hit on January 5. Sensex meanwhile tumbled around 3,800 points (more than 4.4 percent) after hitting an all-time high of 86,159.02 on December 1 last year.

<h3><strong>What should you do with your SIPs?</strong></h3>
As markets decline, investors remain worried about their Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs). However, periods of corrections are where SIPs demonstrate their true strength, said Gurmeet Singh Chawla, Director of Master Capital Services Ltd. SIP allocations during lower market levels provides cost averaging, allowing investors to accumulate more units at reduced prices, which incrementally improves long-term returns and compounding, he said.

"Waiting for stability often results in missing attractive entry points, while continuing SIPs during corrections builds discipline and removes emotional decision-making from the process. For long-term wealth creation, consistency matters far more than by attempting to time market inflection points," the analyst said.
<h3><strong>'Avoid trying to time the perfect entry'</strong></h3>
Markets correct after lifetime highs, and such phases are a part of the investment cycle, said Vivek law, Editor In Chief of Simple Hai. “While short-term volatility can be uncomfortable, long-term investors must avoid trying to time the perfect entry,” he said.

The analyst noted that corrections provide a good opportunity to deploy capital in a gradual manner, rather than wait endlessly for deeper lows. “SIP investors should continue their investments, since market downturns help improve long-term returns due to rupee-cost averaging. Investors with surplus funds may consider selectively increasing SIP allocations or deploying investments in a staggered manner, provided their risk appetite and time horizon are in alignment with their financial goals,” he said.
<h3><strong>'Do not stop existing SIPs'</strong></h3>
Arjun Guha Thakurta, Executive Director at Anand Rathi Wealth, said the current downturn is not really a correction as markets are only 3-4 percent down from their lifetime highs. However, he added that these can be the phases when it makes sense to add gradually to SIPs instead of waiting for a perfect level.

“The important thing is to not stop existing SIPs, and incase one can do step up then one should definitely go for it,” the analyst explained. “With the India budget event coming up, some amount of volatility can be expected in the market. However for SIP investors, this volatility works in their favour because it helps in accumulating more units at better prices over time,” he added.

For investors who have a lump sum amount to invest, the money can be deployed gradually in three or four weekly tranches to smoothen entry levels, Thakurta said, adding that the long term outlook for Indian markets remains positive, macro indicators are supportive, and markets have already gone through a fair bit of time and price adjustment over the last year.

"It is also important that investors follow a sensible market cap allocation within the equity portion of their portfolio, with around 50 to 55% in large cap, 20 to 25% in mid cap, and the balance in small cap funds," he said.
<h3><strong>'Modestly increase SIPs instead of waiting for the perfect bottom'</strong></h3>
Khushi Mistry, Research Analyst at Bonanza, said that this kind of pullback from fresh highs is usually a healthy correction, and not an automatic signal to either rush in aggressively or exit. "For most investors, continuing and modestly increasing SIPs through such phases works better than waiting for an elusive perfect bottom. With sentiment still cautious and near-term downside possible, staggered deployment (phased buying over the next 3–6 months) into high-conviction names or diversified funds is generally more prudent than a large one-shot bet," the analyst said.

Evidence across cycles shows that stopping or pausing SIPs to time corrections tends to reduce long- term wealth, even if returns in percentage terms sometimes look slightly better when starting after a fall, Mistry explained, adding that continuing SIPs through drawdowns allows investors to buy more units at lower levels, which is the core edge of rupee-cost averaging in volatile markets.
<h3><strong>'Quality and patience drive long-term wealth creation'</strong></h3>
Naren Agarwal, CEO of Wealth1, also highlighted that market corrections after hitting fresh lifetime highs are a normal part of equity cycles. "Historically, Indian equity markets have seen 10–15% corrections almost every 12–18 months, even within strong bull phases, yet the Nifty 50 has delivered around 12–14% CAGR over the last two decades. SIP data also reinforces the case for discipline, with monthly SIP inflows in India now above ₹20,000 crore, reflecting investors’ preference for systematic investing through volatility," he said.

"Continuing SIPs, and selectively increasing allocations during market downturns for long-term goals, allows investors to benefit from rupee-cost averaging when valuations moderate. That said, any incremental exposure should remain aligned with individual risk profiles, asset allocation and time horizons, as quality and patience drive long-term wealth creation,” he added.
