After rebounding briefly in early trade, the Sensex later fell nearly 500 points from day's high to 83,909.67, while the broader Nifty declined below the 25,800 mark to 25,798.40.

Market sentiment remained cautious following the sharp sell-off in the previous session as global trade-related uncertainties continued to weigh on investor confidence.

1) Persistent FII selling: Foreign institutional investors offloaded equities worth Rs 3,367.12 crore on Thursday. This marked the fourth straight session of selling by FIIs after a brief pause on January 2.

2) Caution ahead of US ruling on tariffs: Investors are awaiting a US Supreme Court ruling on the legality of tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump. If the tariffs are declared illegal, the US government may be required to refund nearly USD 150 billion to importers.

Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, said "After the sharp correction yesterday triggered by the possibility of about 500 % tariff on India under the provisions of the Russia Sanctioning Act approved by President Trump, the market will be focused on the verdict expected today from the US Supreme Court on the legality of Trump tariffs. There is a high probability of the verdict going against Trump. But the details are significant: that is, whether it would be a partial striking down of the tariffs or completely declaring the tariffs illegal. The market reaction would depend on the details. If the Supreme Court declares Trump tariffs illegal, there would be a rally in India since India has been the worst affected by the 50% tariffs."

3) Renewed tariff concerns: The benchmark indices have fallen sharply in recent sessions after Trump hinted at raising tariffs on Indian goods over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian crude. Over the last four sessions, the Sensex and Nifty have declined 1.8 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively.

Additionally, Trump has approved a sanctions bill that could impose 500 percent tariffs on countries purchasing Russian oil. US Senator Lindsey Graham said he had a "very productive meeting" with Trump at the White House during which the President approved the bipartisan Russia sanctions bill.

"This bill would give President Trump tremendous leverage against countries like China, India and Brazil to incentivise them to stop buying the cheap Russian oil," Graham said.

"Persistent concerns over potential US tariff actions linked to India’s Russian oil imports have kept sentiment fragile, while the lack of visible progress in US–India trade discussions is reinforcing institutional caution, particularly among foreign investors," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

4) Rise in crude oil prices: Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.53 percent to USD 62.32 a barrel. Higher crude prices tend to increase India’s import bill and inflation risks, which weigh on equities.

5) Rupee weakness: The rupee fell 7 paise to 89.97 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday amid sustained FII outflows and higher crude prices. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 88.88 before slipping further.

Forex traders said concerns over possible US tariffs and weak domestic equity markets led to continued selling by foreign investors, putting pressure on the local currency.
<h3>Technical outlook</h3>
Devarsh Vakil, Head of Prime Research at HDFC Securities, said the Nifty has breached key technical support levels.

"The Nifty breached crucial support at its 50-day exponential moving average, currently at 25,911, and violated the previous swing low of 25,878 on the daily chart. The next meaningful support level appears near 25,700, which coincides with the December 2025 swing low. On the upside, the 26,000–26,050 zone is expected to act as strong resistance in the near term," Vakil said.

Bears tightened their grip on Dalal Street as Indian equity benchmarks extended losses for the fourth consecutive session on January 8. The Nifty slipped near the 25,850 mark intraday, weighed down by broad-based selling across sectors, persistent foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, concerns over potential US tariffs, and rising geopolitical tensions.

At close, the Sensex was down 780.18 points or 0.92 percent at 84,180.96, and the Nifty was down 263.90 points or 1.01 percent at 25,876.85.

US Equities (Mixed)

Wall Street ended mixed on Thursday, as Nvidia and other technology stocks dipped, while defense companies advanced after President Donald Trump called for an enlarged $1.5 trillion military budget.

The S&amp;amp;P 500 climbed 0.01% to end the session at 6,921.45 points.

The Nasdaq declined 0.44% to 23,480.02 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.55% to 49,266.11 points.



US Bond Yield (Flat)

The yield on 10-year Treasuries and 10-year Treasuries were unchanged at 4.16% and 3.49%, respectively.



Dollar Index (Flat)

The US dollar advanced at the start of the Asian session on Friday, as traders awaited the release of the latest US jobs report and braced for a forthcoming US Supreme Court decision on President Donald Trump's use of emergency tariff powers.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was up 0.2% at 98.91, rising for a third consecutive day.

We remain positive on the sector, as much of the negative news appears to have been priced in. The key missing element has been earnings growth, despite robust order books.

We bucket auto and auto ancillaries also as part of consumer discretionary where we see good tailwinds and expect earning upgrades owing to GST and income tax rate rate cut coupled with lower interest rates.

Could the Q3 earnings season mark the beginning of a more durable earnings upgrade cycle?

In our view, the earnings downcycle has bottomed out, and expect recovery in discretionary consumption demand backed by monetary and fiscal stimulus like GST and income tax rate cuts, low interest rate and liquidity surplus.

Overall, earnings momentum continues to be driven by manufacturing, auto and auto ancillaries, BFSI and discretionary consumption. The impact of fiscal and monetary stimulus generally comes with a lag and hence we believe H2FY26 is likely to deliver a positive surprise in terms of earnings performance.

Which sectors are likely to deliver upside surprises during the Q3 earnings season?

We continue to prefer sectors aligned with India’s domestic growth story. Consumer and automobile stocks are likely to benefit from potential tax cuts, improving consumer sentiment, and a gradual recovery in rural demand.

Banks and NBFCs remain well positioned, supported by healthy credit growth, adequate liquidity and lower interest rates along with healthy asset quality.

Healthcare and CDMO companies continue to offer strong structural growth opportunities as global players diversify supply chains and increase outsourcing.

Additionally, power and capital goods sectors should see sustained momentum, backed by higher investments in infrastructure and manufacturing. We also expect uptick in private capex backed by strong manufacturing demand.

We believe that India’s macro is well placed to drive earning growth. We expect sequential improvement in corporate earnings going forward owing to fiscal and monitory stimulus mentioned above. The ability of companies to deliver consistent earnings and protect margins will ultimately determine market direction.

On the domestic front, progress on India’s manufacturing push, infrastructure spending, and private sector capex will drive corporate earnings, as these will shape medium-term growth visibility. Policy stability and regulatory continuity will also play an important role in sustaining investor confidence.

I think India offers decent depth to absorb incremental equity supply provided it is backed by good business, decent management and at right valuations.

However, one should be very cautious of unsustainable business models and also on the valuation being demanded by fresh IPOs. We found margin of safety not favourable in recent IPOs, hence stayed away from most of the recent IPOs.

Do you expect any game-changing announcements in the Union Budget 2026?

We believe that growth-oriented measures will continue to get boost both from monetary and fiscal side. Many path breaking reforms including PLI and non-tariff barriers aimed at boosting growth have already been introduced.

We remain positive, as strong GDP performance, robust industrial output reflected in recent IIP data. Sustained reforms, improving ease of doing business, and the clear focus on job creation will further lift confidence in the economy and the growth outlook.

Do you think 2026 will be a robust year for the IPO market?

The sharp rise in IPO activity reflects growing confidence in India’s capital markets and the availability of risk capital. At the same time, history shows that periods of heavy IPO issuance demand greater discipline from investors, as not all listings go on to deliver long-term value.

In 2026, IPO activity is likely to remain healthy, but investor focus should remain firmly on fundamentals and valuations. The quality of the business model, visibility and sustainability of earnings, along with margin of safety should be evaluated diligently before investing.

What are your contrarian bets for the new year?

IT, auto CV and BFSI sector offers good contra bet where valuation is still comfortable and growth visibility is strong. IT companies continue to maintain strong margins, along with large deal wins and large-cap names are now trading at reasonable valuations.

BFSI sector will continue to report uptick in credit growth backed by lower interest rates, adequate liquidity and revival in consumer demand and private sector capex. BFSI and select NBFC stocks are still available at reasonable valuations considering improving ROE metrics.

What are your contrarian bets for the new year?

IT, auto CV and BFSI sector offers good contra bet where valuation is still comfortable and growth visibility is strong. IT companies continue to maintain strong margins, along with large deal wins and large-cap names are now trading at reasonable valuations.

BFSI sector will continue to report uptick in credit growth backed by lower interest rates, adequate liquidity and revival in consumer demand and private sector capex. BFSI and select NBFC stocks are still available at reasonable valuations considering improving ROE metrics.
