The Nifty 50 failed to see follow-through buying interest as global weakness amid the ongoing US–Iran conflict lifted risk-off sentiment, highlighting the continued dominance of bears over bulls. Elevated oil prices and a choking supply of natural gas sent the index down over 1.6 percent on March 11 as selling pressure was seen across sectors, with India VIX spiking again.

With the erasure of all the previous day's gains, the 23,700 support (Monday's low formed after a big gap-down opening) is now expected to be at major risk. Below this, 23,500 is the level to watch. However, the hurdle on the higher side is placed at 24,000–24,050. Even the gap between the 50-day EMA and the 200-day EMA has been narrowing. If the former crosses the latter on the downside — generally known as a death cross in technical terms — further bloodbath cannot be ruled out, experts said.

The Nifty 50 opened lower and remained under pressure throughout the session. It touched an intraday low of 23,834 before closing at 23,867, down 395 points (1.63 percent), and formed a sizeable bearish candle, indicating strong selling pressure at higher levels.

Momentum indicators further supported the negative bias. The RSI remains in a falling trajectory and is currently placed near 30, reflecting weak momentum. Meanwhile, a rising ADX signals strengthening bearish trend intensity, and the MACD remains well below the zero line with a long red bar in the histogram, reinforcing the prevailing downside bias. The Stochastic RSI sustained in the oversold zone.

"An already weak technical chart extended its weakness, as the positive gap between the 50 and 200 moving averages appears to be narrowing, heightening the risk of a death cross. If this happens, further rounds of selling pressure could emerge, potentially pushing the Nifty significantly lower," Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, said.

According to him, supports are placed at 23,700 and 23,300, while on the higher end, resistance is placed at 24,100.

Meanwhile, India VIX, the fear gauge, spiked 11.41 percent to 21.06, keeping the bulls at risk. It needs to fall sharply for the bulls to enter a comfort zone.

The weekly options data indicated that 23,500, which has the maximum Put open interest, is expected to act as support for the Nifty 50, while resistance is placed in the 24,000–24,300 range, which holds the maximum Call open interest.

Bank Nifty

The banking index was hit quite hard, falling 1,215 points (2.13 percent) to 55,736 and forming a long bearish candle on the daily timeframe, with sell signals from momentum indicators, indicating bears maintaining a strong presence. Hence, Monday's low near 55,300 is now expected to be at risk.

The RSI remained in the oversold zone, falling to 28.74, while the MACD sustained below the reference and zero lines with a widening red bar in the histogram. All this indicates continued bearish momentum.

"The immediate support is placed in the 55,400–55,300 zone. Any sustainable move below this zone could result in Bank Nifty extending its weakness towards 54,900, followed by 54,500 in the short term," Sudeep Shah, Head - Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, said.

On the upside, the 56,100–56,200 zone is likely to act as a strong resistance, he added.

Global venture capitalist and CEO of B Capital, Howard Morgan, said India stands to gain structurally from US isolationism under President Donald Trump and the ongoing economic decoupling between the United States and China, creating a “vacuum” that India is increasingly positioned to fill.

Speaking at the India Global Forum in Mumbai, Morgan said the protectionist shift in US policy has opened space for countries like India to expand their global economic role.

“I do buy that,” Morgan said when asked whether current geopolitical tensions could structurally benefit India. “President Trump has very deliberately tried to push the isolationist agenda, and that leaves a hole, a vacuum that India can fill and is filling.”

He added that tensions between the US and China — which he described as likely to remain an economic rather than a military conflict — could further increase India’s importance in global supply chains and economic partnerships.

“Because of the conflict with China, which is hopefully never going to be a hot conflict but certainly an economic conflict, India has a great role to play in that,” Morgan said.

Morgan, whose firm B Capital has invested more than $1.5 billion in India over the past decade, said the country’s venture ecosystem and investor base have strengthened significantly in recent years.

He pointed to stronger public market participation and the growth of early-stage venture capital activity as key developments in the Indian market.

“The early-stage venture market has grown dramatically,” he said. “We’re now starting to be able to realize some of that, which is the most crucial thing in venture — returning capital to investors.”

At the same time, Morgan cautioned that India’s growth trajectory could still face risks.

“Anything could derail it,” he said, citing political instability and energy shocks as potential challenges. A prolonged crisis in West Asia, he noted, could affect India given its reliance on imported oil.

“OIl is a crucial resource for India,” he said. “If the crisis in what we call the Middle East or West Asia lasts too long, that could start to derail.”

Morgan also said venture investors are becoming more cautious in emerging markets and are conducting deeper due diligence on startup finances.

He noted that B Capital increasingly uses artificial intelligence tools to analyse company financial data, including detailed revenue records, to detect irregularities.

“We want to see your detailed financials and every single order,” he said, adding that AI-based analysis has helped identify unusual patterns in some cases.

Despite these risks, Morgan said India’s entrepreneurial momentum and expanding technology ecosystem signal a broader shift in the country’s role in the global economy.

“What makes this different is the spirit,” he said. “India can have a global technology play — more than just being the services arm and customer support for the rest of the world.”

With sustained economic growth, Morgan said India could continue climbing the global economic rankings in the coming years.

“With that GDP growth, you’ll go from number four to number three pretty quickly,” he said.

Most sectors traded in the red. Auto and private bank stocks led the decline, while pharma and a few defensive sectors managed to remain positive. A major factor affecting sentiment was continued selling by FIIs. In the first week of March alone, FIIs sold more than Rs 21,000 crore worth of Indian equities, which has created persistent pressure on the market.

The ongoing conflict between the US and Iran kept global markets nervous. Reports of strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, an important global oil shipping route, increased fears of supply disruptions.

Global attention remained on Donald Trump’s announcement of a USD 300 billion refinery project in Texas, where Reliance is expected to be a key partner. While Reliance shares stayed firm after the news, the gains in a few large stocks could not offset the broad market weakness.

The equity benchmark indices resumed their decline on Wednesday after a day’s breather, falling up to 1.5 percent amid continued foreign fund outflows and selling in blue-chip banking shares.

The Sensex was trading 1,197.45 points or 1.53 percent, lower at 77,008.53. The broader Nifty slipped 348.15 points or 1.43 percent to 23,913.45.

Markets had closed higher in the previous session. On Tuesday, the Sensex jumped 639.82 points or 0.82 percent to settle at 78,205.98. The Nifty climbed 233.55 points or 0.97 percent to end at 24,261.60.

Out of 7 sessions in March so far, the Sensex and Nifty have declined by up to 7 per cent in 5 sessions combined.

Analysts said the recent pullback in domestic equities had been supported by a sharp correction in global crude prices. Brent crude has declined from around USD 120 a barrel to nearly USD 86, offering some relief to global risk sentiment and aiding a recovery in domestic markets.

Volatility has also eased, with the India VIX cooling from levels near 24 to below 19.

However, analysts cautioned that the broader market structure continues to indicate weakness.

Ruchit Jain of Motilal Oswal Financial Services said that despite the recent bounce, the broader market still reflects a lower top–lower bottom formation.

According to Jain, for the pullback to sustain, the Nifty needs to hold above the 24,200 level, which could open the door for a move towards 24,444 and 24,600. On the downside, support is seen around 24,000, followed by 23,800.

For long-term investors, the focus should remain on disciplined asset allocation and gradual investments rather than attempting to time every market move. Periods of volatility can provide opportunities to accumulate quality assets systematically while staying aligned with long-term financial goals."

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, noted "Bears remained at the helm and, as expected, they emerged around the 24,300 level, leading to a sharp fall during the day. On the lower end, the index slipped further and briefly pierced the 24,000 mark. The ongoing rise in crude oil prices and the choking supply of natural gas sent shockwaves through the Indian equity market. An already weak technical chart extended its weakness, as the positive gap between the 50DMA and 200DMA appears to be narrowing, heightening the risk of a death cross. A death cross occurs when the 50DMA cuts the 200DMA from above. If this happens, further rounds of selling pressure could emerge, potentially pushing the Nifty significantly lower. Supports are placed at 23,700 and 23,300, while on the higher end, resistance is placed at 24,100."

The equity benchmark indices resumed their decline on Wednesday after a day’s breather, falling up to 1.5 percent amid continued foreign fund outflows and selling in blue-chip banking shares.

The Sensex was trading 1,197.45 points or 1.53 percent, lower at 77,008.53. The broader Nifty slipped 348.15 points or 1.43 percent to 23,913.45.

Markets had closed higher in the previous session. On Tuesday, the Sensex jumped 639.82 points or 0.82 percent to settle at 78,205.98. The Nifty climbed 233.55 points or 0.97 percent to end at 24,261.60.

Out of 7 sessions in March so far, the Sensex and Nifty have declined by up to 7 per cent in 5 sessions combined.

Analysts said the recent pullback in domestic equities had been supported by a sharp correction in global crude prices. Brent crude has declined from around USD 120 a barrel to nearly USD 86, offering some relief to global risk sentiment and aiding a recovery in domestic markets.

Volatility has also eased, with the India VIX cooling from levels near 24 to below 19.

However, analysts cautioned that the broader market structure continues to indicate weakness.
