Live: Can bulls continue to defend Nifty's 25,100 zone? | Opening Bell

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are likely to open on a flat note today, with cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading near 25,221.

The Indian benchmark indices erased some of the intraday gains but managed to close on a positive note for the fourth consecutive session on October 7 with Nifty closing above the 25,100 amid buying seen in the auto, consumer durables, oil &amp;amp; gas, energy, realty names.

At close, the Sensex was up 136.63 points or 0.17 percent at 81,926.75, and the Nifty was up 30.65 points or 0.12 percent at 25,108.30. BSE Midcap index added 0.4% and smallcap index was ended marginally lower.

GIFT Nifty (Flat)

The GIFT Nifty is trading flat at around 25,221, indicating a muted start for the day.

Asian Equities (Mixed)

Asian markets were trading mixed in the early trade after Wall Street’s pullback from record highs sparked caution among investors.



US Equities (Down)

US stocks closed lower on Tuesday as investors, deprived of economic data resulting from the shuttered government, looked to secondary indicators and remarks from US Federal Reserve officials for clues regarding economic weakness and monetary policy.

All three indexes ended in negative territory after a consumer expectations survey from the New York Federal Reserve showed deteriorating future expectations and rising inflation projections. The report garnered increased scrutiny amid a federal data blackout resulting from a partisan congressional impasse that extended the government shutdown to its seventh day.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 91.99 points, or 0.20%, to 46,602.98, the S&amp;amp;P 500 lost 25.69 points, or 0.38%, to 6,714.59 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 153.30 points, or 0.67%, to 22,788.36.



US Bond Yield (Up)

The yield on 10-year Treasuries were up 5 basis points at 4.12 percent, while the 2-year Treasuries little change at 3.55 percent.



Dollar Index (Up)

The U.S. dollar rose to its strongest levels in six weeks in early Asian trading on Wednesday as risks around the U.S. government shutdown intensified, sparking fresh investor worries and boosting demand for safe haven assets.



Asian Currencies (Down)

Asian currencies were trading mostly lower in the early trade on Wednesday with Japanese Yen leading the losers followed by Malaysian Ringgit, Singapore Dollar, Philippines Peso, South Korean Won.



Crude (Gains)

Oil prices edged higher in early trade on Wednesday as markets started to brush off oversupply fear for the time being, having digested a decision by OPEC+ to restrain November production increases.



Gold (Flat)

Gold hit a record high just below $4,000 an ounce as the US government shutdown, a wobble in technology stocks, and political shake-ups in Japan and France buoyed demand.



Fund Flow Action

After remaining net sellers in the previous 10 sessions, the Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers on October 7 as they purchased equities of Rs 1440 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought equities of Rs 452 crore on the same day.

Jio Financial, Bharti Airtel, Eternal, Eicher Motors, HCL Technologies were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers included Trent, Tata Motors, Axis Bank, Tata Consumer and HUL.

Among sectors, energy, oil &amp; gas, pharma, telecom, consumer durables rose 0.3-2%.

In stock-specific action, Trent shares down 2% on 'overweight' rating by Morgan Stanley, Coal India shares gain on MoU with Chhattisgarh Mineral Development Corporation, Bank of India shares gain as Q2 global business rose 11.8%, Metropolis Healthcare share price gained 2% as Q2 revenue jumps 23%.

Brigade Enterprises shares added 4% on signing joint development agreement for premium residential projects in West Chennai, Fino Payment Bank shares gained 4% post SEBI settlement order, Gabriel India hits 52-week high on executing JV Agreement with Korea-based SK Enmove Co.

Outlook for October 8

Today, the benchmark indices witnessed a volatile trading session. After a roller-coaster activity, the Nifty ended 31 points higher, while the Sensex was up by 137 points. Among sectors, the Reality index outperformed, rallying 1.10 percent, whereas intraday profit booking was seen in selective Defense and FMCG stocks.

Technically, after an early morning intraday rally, the market consistently experienced profit booking near the 25,200/82300 resistance zone. However, the short-term outlook of the market remains positive. We believe that the 20-day SMA (Simple Moving Average) and the 25,000–24,950/81700-81500 zones will act as key support levels for traders. As long as the market remains above these levels, the bullish sentiment is likely to continue.

On the flip side, 25,200/82300 and 25,275/82500 would serve as key resistance levels for the bulls. For day traders, buying on intraday dips and selling on rallies would be the ideal strategy. However, below 24,950/81500, the uptrend could become vulnerable.

Nifty 50 gave up most of its intraday gains on Tuesday, October 7, which also marks the weekly expiry session, while Sensex was up 140 points. Investors are looking towards the upcoming earnings season for their next set of cues.

At close, the <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/indian-indices/sensex-4.html">Sensex</a> was up 161.86 points or 0.20 percent at 81,951.98, and the Nifty was up 34.35 points or 0.14 percent at 25,112.00. About 1686 shares advanced, 2119 shares declined, and 122 shares unchanged.

The World Bank has raised India’s GDP growth forecast for FY26 to 6.5 percent from its earlier estimate of 6.3 percent projected in June, citing resilient domestic demand. However, it revised its FY27 growth outlook downward by 20 basis points to 6.3 percent.

On the sectoral front, buying interest was notably strong in Oil &amp; Gas, Financial Services, Banking, Construction, and Consumer Durables, which led the sectoral gains. Conversely, weakness persisted in Media, Consumer Goods, and select stocks, marking them as the day's laggards.

Going ahead,  VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments believes that the ongoing mild rally in the market has the potential to gain momentum. The FII selling in India is slowly declining since the sharp appreciation in other markets has pushed up their valuations and the valuation differential between India and other markets has come down.

"The steady inflows into mutual funds, particularly the SIP inflows, is a strong support to the market. The combined effect of the Budget income tax cut, GST cuts and low interest rate regime can impart resilience to India’s GDP growth, and corporate earnings in FY27 can smartly pick up to about 15 percent. The market will start discounting this soon. Time for investors to turn positive. Since there is huge short position in the market any positive news can trigger short-covering, further aiding the rally," he added.

From a technical perspective, the Nifty decisively breached the key resistance at 25,200, potentially paving the way toward the 25,500 mark, while immediate support rests at 25,000. Similarly, Bank Nifty faces resistance at 56,500, and a breakout above this level could propel it toward 57,000, with the nearest support positioned at 56,200, said Ashika Institutional Equities.
