Foreign investors (FIIs/FPIs) net sold Rs 6,267 crore worth of Indian equities on March 11. At the same time, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) net bought shares worth Rs 4,966 crore, according to provisional exchange data.

During the trading session, DIIs purchased shares worth Rs 15,1278 crore and sold shares worth Rs 10,513 crore. In contrast, FIIs bought shares worth Rs 11,109 crore but sold shares totalling Rs 17,074 crore.

For the year so far, FIIs have been net sellers of shares worth Rs 42,523 crore, while DIIs have net bought shares worth Rs 56,192 crore.



At close, the Sensex was down 1,342.27 points or 1.72 percent at 76,863.71, and the Nifty was down 394.75 points or 1.63 percent at 23,866.85.

&quot;Markets plunged sharply on Wednesday, losing over one and a half percent and resuming their corrective phase amid weak global cues and heightened geopolitical tensions. The Nifty opened on a subdued note and remained under persistent selling pressure throughout the session. Sectoral participation remained largely negative, reflecting broad-based weakness across the market. Auto, banking, financials and realty were among the key drags, weighing heavily on the benchmark indices. However, selective buying interest was seen in pharma, energy and metal counters, which offered limited support. On the broader front, pressure was visible across the board, particularly in the midcap segment, which declined by nearly 1.5%.

Investor sentiment remained fragile as escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continued to unsettle global markets and push volatility higher.

&quot;Concerns over potential disruptions to crude oil supply, rising inflationary pressures and the possible impact on economic growth kept participants cautious. Additionally, continued foreign institutional investor selling and weakness in the rupee further dampened risk appetite,&quot; Mishra added.

Global venture capitalist and CEO of B Capital, Howard Morgan, said India stands to gain structurally from US isolationism under President Donald Trump and the ongoing economic decoupling between the United States and China, creating a “vacuum” that India is increasingly positioned to fill.

Speaking at the India Global Forum in Mumbai, Morgan said the protectionist shift in US policy has opened space for countries like India to expand their global economic role.

“I do buy that,” Morgan said when asked whether current geopolitical tensions could structurally benefit India. “President Trump has very deliberately tried to push the isolationist agenda, and that leaves a hole, a vacuum that India can fill and is filling.”

He added that tensions between the US and China — which he described as likely to remain an economic rather than a military conflict — could further increase India’s importance in global supply chains and economic partnerships.

“Because of the conflict with China, which is hopefully never going to be a hot conflict but certainly an economic conflict, India has a great role to play in that,” Morgan said.

Morgan, whose firm B Capital has invested more than $1.5 billion in India over the past decade, said the country’s venture ecosystem and investor base have strengthened significantly in recent years.

He pointed to stronger public market participation and the growth of early-stage venture capital activity as key developments in the Indian market.

“The early-stage venture market has grown dramatically,” he said. “We’re now starting to be able to realize some of that, which is the most crucial thing in venture — returning capital to investors.”

At the same time, Morgan cautioned that India’s growth trajectory could still face risks.

“Anything could derail it,” he said, citing political instability and energy shocks as potential challenges. A prolonged crisis in West Asia, he noted, could affect India given its reliance on imported oil.

“OIl is a crucial resource for India,” he said. “If the crisis in what we call the Middle East or West Asia lasts too long, that could start to derail.”

Morgan also said venture investors are becoming more cautious in emerging markets and are conducting deeper due diligence on startup finances.

He noted that B Capital increasingly uses artificial intelligence tools to analyse company financial data, including detailed revenue records, to detect irregularities.

“We want to see your detailed financials and every single order,” he said, adding that AI-based analysis has helped identify unusual patterns in some cases.

Despite these risks, Morgan said India’s entrepreneurial momentum and expanding technology ecosystem signal a broader shift in the country’s role in the global economy.

“What makes this different is the spirit,” he said. “India can have a global technology play — more than just being the services arm and customer support for the rest of the world.”

With sustained economic growth, Morgan said India could continue climbing the global economic rankings in the coming years.

“With that GDP growth, you’ll go from number four to number three pretty quickly,” he said.

The equity benchmark indices resumed their decline on Wednesday after a day’s breather, falling up to 1.5 percent amid continued foreign fund outflows and selling in blue-chip banking shares.

The Sensex was trading 1,197.45 points or 1.53 percent, lower at 77,008.53. The broader Nifty slipped 348.15 points or 1.43 percent to 23,913.45.

Markets had closed higher in the previous session. On Tuesday, the Sensex jumped 639.82 points or 0.82 percent to settle at 78,205.98. The Nifty climbed 233.55 points or 0.97 percent to end at 24,261.60.

Out of 7 sessions in March so far, the Sensex and Nifty have declined by up to 7 per cent in 5 sessions combined.

Analysts said the recent pullback in domestic equities had been supported by a sharp correction in global crude prices. Brent crude has declined from around USD 120 a barrel to nearly USD 86, offering some relief to global risk sentiment and aiding a recovery in domestic markets.

Volatility has also eased, with the India VIX cooling from levels near 24 to below 19.

However, analysts cautioned that the broader market structure continues to indicate weakness.

Ruchit Jain of Motilal Oswal Financial Services said that despite the recent bounce, the broader market still reflects a lower top–lower bottom formation.

According to Jain, for the pullback to sustain, the Nifty needs to hold above the 24,200 level, which could open the door for a move towards 24,444 and 24,600. On the downside, support is seen around 24,000, followed by 23,800.

Prashasta Seth – CEO, Prudent Investment Managers LLP, added &quot;Given the uncertainty in the middle east and its massive ramifications specially on crude in immediate term such short-term corrections and volatility is not unusual. Market corrections of 5–10% on specific news are historically common and often help normalise valuations after extended rallies. Valuations esp in certain segments of the markets like micro caps and small caps have become supportive but multiple uncertainties like crude oil prices, monsoon and impact of AI on Indian IT services have kept the market under pressure. However, investors should avoid overreacting to short term fluctuations. For long-term investors, the focus should remain on disciplined asset allocation and gradual investments rather than attempting to time every market move. Periods of volatility can provide opportunities to accumulate quality assets systematically while staying aligned with long-term financial goals.&quot;

Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, noted &quot;Bears remained at the helm and, as expected, they emerged around the 24,300 level, leading to a sharp fall during the day. On the lower end, the index slipped further and briefly pierced the 24,000 mark. The ongoing rise in crude oil prices and the choking supply of natural gas sent shockwaves through the Indian equity market. An already weak technical chart extended its weakness, as the positive gap between the 50DMA and 200DMA appears to be narrowing, heightening the risk of a death cross. A death cross occurs when the 50DMA cuts the 200DMA from above. If this happens, further rounds of selling pressure could emerge, potentially pushing the Nifty significantly lower. Supports are placed at 23,700 and 23,300, while on the higher end, resistance is placed at 24,100.&quot;
