The Indian markets started the week on a strong note, hitting fresh all-time high in the opening trade following positive global markets and above estimates GDP at 8.2% (six-quarter high) in Q2FY26 added to the positive sentiments.

However, a <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/economy/manufacturing-slows-to-a-9-month-low-of-56-6-in-november-13703869.html">9-month low manufacturing growth</a> rate of 56.6 in November and rupee depreciation erased all the intraday gains in the fist half, and remained rangebound in a second half ahead of US and India central bank's interest rate decision later this week.

At close, the Sensex was down 64.77 points or 0.08 percent at 85,641.90, and the Nifty was down 27.20 points or 0.10 percent at 26,175.75. BSE Midcap and smallcap indices ended flat.

Nifty Bank index touched fresh record high, crossing 60,000 for the first time, however, closing marginally lower at 59,681.35.

Nifty Midcap 100 indices also jumped to fresh record high of 61,311.25, intraday, closing flat at 61,043.40.

Interglobe Aviation, Bajaj Finance, Max Healthcare, Sun Pharma, Trent were among top losers on the Nifty, while gainers were Adani Ports, Tata Motors PV, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Eicher Motors.

Among sectors auto, IT, PSU Bank, metal rose 0.3-0.5% each, while realty index was down 1% and consumer durables, pharma indices were down 0.5% each.

On the benchmark front, the Nifty 50 opened firmly around 26,325—marking a fresh lifetime high amid buoyant sentiment—but experienced intraday volatility before closing near 26,175, down 0.10%. Sectoral trends were mixed, with auto, metal and IT edging higher, while realty and pharma closed in the red. Broader indices moved largely in line with the benchmark, though market breadth indicated underlying weakness.

Sentiment drew support from strong GDP data reinforcing India’s economic momentum, positive global cues—particularly from US markets—and steady DII buying which offset FII outflows. Robust wholesale auto numbers and renewed optimism around rate cuts amid moderating inflation also aided the mood, even as caution persisted ahead of the RBI policy and key US data releases.

The recent pause reflects a healthy consolidation phase, and traders should continue to maintain a positive bias. In case of extended consolidation, the Nifty is expected to find support near the 26,100 zone, with major support around the 20-DEMA, currently near 25,950.

On the upside, a decisive break above 26,300 could open the gates for a move towards the 26,500+ zone. Meanwhile, we advise a stock-specific trading approach, with preference for banking, auto, and metal names, while being selective in other sectors.

Taking Stock: Market fails to hold record high; auto, metal, PSU banks shine

The Indian markets started the week on a strong note, hitting fresh all-time high in the opening trade following positive global markets and above estimates GDP at 8.2% (six-quarter high) in Q2FY26 added to the positive sentiments.

However, a 9-month low manufacturing growth rate of 56.6 in November and rupee depreciation erased all the intraday gains in the fist half, and remained rangebound in a second half ahead of US and India central bank's interest rate decision later this week.

At close, the Sensex was down 64.77 points or 0.08 percent at 85,641.90, and the Nifty was down 27.20 points or 0.10 percent at 26,175.75. BSE Midcap and smallcap indices ended flat.

Nifty Bank index touched fresh record high, crossing 60,000 for the first time, however, closing marginally lower at 59,681.35.

Nifty Midcap 100 indices also jumped to fresh record high of 61,311.25, intraday, closing flat at 61,043.40.

The Sensex pared early gains and closed 64.77 points or 0.08 percent lower at 85,641.90. During the day, the benchmark jumped 452.35 points or 0.52 percent to hit a record intra-day high of 86,159.02.

The Nifty dipped 27.20 points or 0.10 percent to settle at 26,175.75. During the day, it climbed 122.85 points or 0.46 percent to hit a lifetime high of 26,325.80.

<a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/miscellaneous/titancompany/TI01" target="_blank">Titan</a>, Bajaj Finance and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries were among the major laggards in the Nifty50 index, declining up to 1 percent, while <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/india/stockpricequote/banks-private-sector/kotakmahindrabank/KMB" target="_blank">Kotak Mahindra Bank</a> and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone were the top gainers, rising up to 2 percent. Market breadth also turned negative as  about 1,717 shares advanced, 2,011 shares declined, and 192 shares were unchanged.

Key reasons behind market decline

1) Rupee at all-time low: The Indian rupee dropped to a lifetime low on Monday despite stellar Q2 GDP growth print. The rupee declined to 89.76 against the US dollar, dipping past its previous record low of 89.49 hit about two weeks back. Rupee has depreciated nearly 1 rupee against US dollar since November 3.

2) RBI rate cut seen unlikely: Stronger-than-expected GDP growth has reduced expectations of a near-term rate cut by the RBI. The benchmark 10-year bond yield rose from 6.47 percent to 6.52 percent on Friday, reflecting the market’s assessment that monetary easing may be off the table for now.

Barclays said it no longer expects a rate cut at the December 5 policy meeting, noting that the robust growth numbers outweigh the impact of unusually low October inflation. The brokerage expects the central bank to maintain a pause while sounding dovish and revising up its growth forecast.

Dr V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Financial Services, said the economy "doesn’t need a monetary stimulus when it is firing on all cylinders", adding that this has acted as a dampener for sentiment.

3) Weak global cues: Asian markets were subdued, with South Korea’s Kospi and Japan’s Nikkei 225 trading lower. Wall Street futures were down by up to 1 percent, signalling a weak start for the US markets after a holiday truncated trading week.

Japanese stocks fell on Monday after a strong end to November as a bout of risk aversion gripped markets even as US rate-cut optimism remained intact, while the beaten-down yen firmed and Japanese government bond yields surged to their highest since 2008. Nikkei fell about 2%.

The spotlight in the currency market has been on the Japanese yen, which strengthened to 155.55 per U.S. dollar as Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda provided the clearest signal yet that interest rate hike could be on the cards soon.

4) FII selling: Foreign investors turn sellers of Indian equities in November, their fourth month of selling in five months. The FIIs sold equities worth Rs 3,795.72 crore on Friday. Persistent FII outflows typically weigh on domestic markets.

"Up to November 28, FIIs sold equity for Rs 15,659 crore and bought equity for Rs 11,894 crore through the primary market. The optimistic new market mood and the impressive GDP numbers warrant a change in FII strategy. However, there is no evidence of a trend reversal in FPI flows. FIIs were buyers in some days and sellers in some other days recently. This is an indication that FII flows may change when the circumstances change,"  V K Vijayakumar added.

5) Rise in crude oil prices: In commodities, oil prices rose after OPEC+ agreed to leave oil output levels unchanged for the first quarter of 2026 as the group slows its push to regain market share amid fears of a looming supply glut.

Brent crude gained 1.62 percent to $63.39 per barrel. Higher crude prices are negative for India as they raise import costs.

6) November PMI hits 9-month low: Despite faster GDP growth in the September quarter, the manufacturing sector lost steam in November, with industrial activity easing to its weakest level in nine months, according to a survey released Monday. Analysts at HSBC said GDP growth may slow noticeably in the March quarter as the temporary lift from GST-related consumption wanes, fiscal spending moderates and export momentum weakens.

7) Technical Hurdle: The Nifty50 continues to face resistance, with no sustained follow-up buying observed after the index touches the 26,300 level. On November 27, the benchmark indices—Sensex and Nifty—scaled fresh lifetime highs during intra-day trade before trimming gains. The Nifty closed with a marginal gain of 10.25 points, or 0.04 percent, at 26,215.55. Earlier in the session, it advanced 105.15 points, or 0.4 percent to register a new all-time high of 26,310.45. The index had previously set a record intra-day high of 26,277.35 on September 27, 2024.

The Sensex too rose 110.87 points, or 0.13 percent, to finish at 85,720.38. During the day, it touched a record high of 86,055.86, up 446.35 points or 0.52 percent. However, profit-booking in the second half of the session pulled the index down from its peak. The previous record high for the Sensex was 85,978.25, also reached on September 27, 2024.

The Sensex jumped 452.35 points to 86,159.02 -- its record peak. The Nifty climbed 122.85 points to hit a lifetime high of 26,325.80. Both indices surpassed their previous all-time highs touched on November 27.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, JSW Steel, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Maruti Suzuki India were among the top gainers in the Nifty50 pack, rising up to 2 percent.
