Nifty Trades In A Narrow Band On F&amp;O Expiry Day; Banks Firm Ahead Of RBI Policy| Closing Bell Live

On Nifty 50's first monthly expiry on Tuesday, September 30, the index saw some jittery moves, gyrating between gains and losses, following a seven-session losing streak. The 30-share Sensex pack also hovered close to the flatline, as investors exercised caution.

At 12:00 p.m., the <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/indian-indices/sensex-4.html">Sensex</a> was down 60.03 points or 0.07 percent at 80,304.91, and the Nifty was down 9.05 points or 0.04 percent at 24,625.85. About 1811 shares advanced, 1724 shares declined, and 152 shares unchanged.

Experts noted that volatility looms with September F&amp;O expiry and headwinds from Trump’s tariffs, visa fee, pharma levy, persistent FII selling and RBI policy outcome.

The sectoral indices showed a mixed trend on Dalal Street. Gains in PSU banks and metals helped limit the downside, while selling in realty, FMCG, and media weighed on sentiment. The Nifty PSU Bank index was the top gainer, rising 1.7 percent, followed by Nifty Metal which advanced 1.49 percent. IT stocks also edged higher with the Nifty IT index up 0.35 percent.

On the other hand, Nifty Media was the worst hit, slipping 1.32 percent, while Realty lost 0.71 percent and FMCG fell 0.27 percent. Energy, Infra, and Auto indices also traded in the red with mild losses. Pharma was largely flat.

The Nifty 50 opened on a cautious yet mildly positive note, briefly testing the 100-EMA zone near 24,745. However, quick profit booking by short-term traders pulled the index back below 24,700, reflecting the market’s fragile mood.

"A sustained move above the 24,745–24,800 band could trigger short covering and open the path toward 24,950. On the flip side, a slip below 24,640 may revive selling pressure and drag the index toward the crucial slope support at 24,535, keeping traders on edge," Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money said.

At 12:00 p.m., the Sensex was down 60.03 points or 0.07 percent at 80,304.91, and the Nifty was down 9.05 points or 0.04 percent at 24,625.85. About 1811 shares advanced, 1724 shares declined, and 152 shares unchanged.

On September 30, Sensex closed 97.32 points or 0.12% lower at 80,267.62, and the Nifty settled 23.8 points or 0.1% lower at 24,611.10. About 1,970 shares advanced, 1,939 shares declined, and 153 shares were unchanged.

Here are three key reasons behind the sharp market reversal:

1) Jitters ahead of RBI rate cut decision

Traders are cautious ahead of Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee's decision on rate cut, scheduled to be announced on October 1. MPC is likely to maintain the status quo on interest rates in its October review, a Moneycontrol poll of 15 economists, bank treasury heads and fund managers has found.

"The monetary policy expected on October 1st is unlikely to surprise. The present growth-inflation dynamics do not warrant a rate cut. Therefore, the RBI is likely to hold rates while sending a dovish message to support the growth momentum in the economy," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.

Bank Nifty fell 250 points from day's high on September 30 even as RBI eased lending norms while tightening oversight on lenders. Nifty PSU Bank index closed 1.8% higher and also posted its best month in two years.

"RBI's move improves rate transmission, broadens gold-based lending and relaxes capital norms, which can aid credit flow and capital access," ICICI Direct said in a note.

2) Persistent FII selling

Sustained selling by foreign investors is also contributing to the bearish sentiment on markets, which have been falling since the past seven sessions.

"The near-term market structure appears weak. Sustained FII selling and absence of positive triggers are preventing any strong recovery in the market. Any attempt to climb  up is facing selling pressure. This is evident from the negative closing yesterday despite the positive institutional inflow of above Rs 1,000 crore," said Vijayakumar.

"We believe oversold positions after the recent sell-off may now lead to some consolidation in the Nifty 50, with strong support around the 24,400-24,500 zone," said Ajit Mishra, senior vice president of research at Religare Broking.

However, foreign selling amounting to $2.55 billion this month and caution ahead of the central bank policy may continue to cap gains, Mishra said.

3) Weak global cues

Weak global cues also contributed to the bearish sentiment in the markets.

Caution prevailed in world markets on Tuesday, with the dollar and equities slipping and gold hitting another record high amid fears a U.S. government shutdown could delay key jobs data.

The dollar was broadly weaker, European stocks were lower in early trade and U.S. equity futures fell a day after US Vice President JD Vance said the government appeared "headed to a shutdown" after little progress in budget talks between President Donald Trump and Democratic opponents.

A government closure would delay the issue of Friday's key employment numbers, putting the spotlight on the Labor Department's JOLTS report on August job openings due later on Tuesday. It could also complicate the outlook for the Federal Reserve, which cut rates earlier this month.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index was last down around 0.2%, while Japan's Nikkei closed down 0.25%. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan, however, rose almost 0.5%, poised for a gain of over 5% this month.

Wall Street Futures were trading lower with Dow and S&amp;P 500 Futures trading 0.2% lower each. Nasdaq Futures were trading 0.18% lower.

Indian benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty are expected to open flat on September 30, with cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading near 24,682.

The market failed to build on opening gains and ended lower for the seventh straight session on September 29 with Nifty ending near 24,650.

At close, the Sensex was down 61.52 points or 0.08 percent at 80,364.94, and the Nifty was down 19.80 points or 0.08 percent at 24,634.90. BSE Midcap index rose 0.3 percent, while smallcap index down marginally.

GIFT Nifty (Flat)

The GIFT Nifty is trading flat at around 24,682, indicating a muted start for the day.

Asian Equities (Mixed)

Asian markets were trading mixed in the early Tuesday trade with Nikkei shed 0.5 percent, while Taiwan Weighted up 1 percent.



US Equities (Up)

Wall Street indexes closed up on Monday with the Nasdaq leading gains as investors bought heavyweight technology stocks and shrugged off the uncertainty of a potential US government shutdown and hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve officials.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 68.78 points, or 0.15%, to 46,316.07, the S&amp;amp;P 500 gained 17.51 points, or 0.26%, to 6,661.21 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 107.09 points, or 0.48%, to 22,591.15.



US Bond Yield (Flat)

The yield on 10-year Treasuries was up marginally at 4.14 percent, while 2-year Treasuries were trading with little change at 3.61 percent.



Dollar Index (Flat)

The U.S. dollar was on the back foot on Tuesday in cautious trading as investors braced for a possible U.S. government shutdown that would halt economic data releases including the crucial jobs report later this week.



Asian currencies (Mixed)

Asian currencies were trading mixed in the early Tuesday trade with Indonesian Rupiah, Philippines Peso, Malaysian Ringgit were trading higher, while South Korean Won, Japanese Yen, Thai Baht, Taiwan Dollar were trading lower.



Crude (Down)

Oil prices fell on Tuesday as another anticipated production increase by OPEC+ and the resumption of oil exports from Iraq's Kurdistan region via Turkey reinforced the outlook for a looming supply surplus.



Gold (Up)

Gold prices rose further to hit a fresh high on Tuesday and were poised for their best month in 14 years, as fears of a potential U.S. government shutdown and growing expectations of further U.S. interest rate cuts boosted demand for the safe-haven metal.



Fund Flow Action

The Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers on sixth consecutive session on September 29 as they offloaded equities of over Rs 2830 crore, while Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities of Rs 3845 crore on the same day.
