The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) on April 8 unanimously decided to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.25 percent and continue with the neutral stance, retaining the flexibility to respond judiciously to incoming information while maintaining caution given the volatile situation and the US-Iran ceasefire agreement.

The MPC noted that the conflict in West Asia adds risk to the inflation and growth outlooks; however, the fundamentals of the Indian economy are on a stronger footing, providing it with greater resilience to withstand shocks now than in the past.

The economy is confronted with a supply shock. Hence, it is prudent to wait and watch the changing circumstances and the evolving growth-inflation outlook, they believe.

The central bank expects the economy to grow at 6.9 percent in FY27, which is lower than the forecast of 7.6 percent for FY26, amid Middle East war-led global risks following elevated energy and other commodity prices.

RBI sees CPI inflation at 4.6 percent for FY27, with the projection unchanged at 4 percent for Q1 FY27 and increasing to 4.4 percent from 4.2 percent earlier for Q2 FY27.

&quot;The MPC has decided to be cautious given the volatile situation and the nascent ceasefire agreement. The upward revision in inflation and the lowering of growth for FY27 show that there could be some lasting effects from the conflict,&quot; Ritesh Taksali, the Chief Investment Officer at Edelweiss Life Insurance, said.

Brent crude oil prices climbed up to $119.5 a barrel in the international markets during the war before cooling down to around $92–95 a barrel on Wednesday. The gap-down in oil prices, further appreciation in the rupee, and the gap-up in equity markets are all attributed to the ceasefire announced by the US and Iran, which has been the major concern for global markets.

Vikas Gupta, CEO and Chief Investment Strategist at OmniScience Capital, also agreed with Ritesh Taksali, saying that even with the ceasefire apparently in place, it is likely to be a very volatile situation in the near future.

&quot;Under these circumstances, it was expected that the RBI would remain neutral and carefully watch the data and its impact on inflation, the INR, and forex reserves. If the war actually ceases before the next meeting, the RBI could focus more on growth and possibly cut rates,&quot; he said.

Before the US-Iran-Israel war started, the expectation was that the RBI would be biased towards rate cuts; however, after the escalation of West Asia tensions, there were expectations of a rate hike or a prolonged pause in rate cuts.

At 12:25 hours IST, the Nifty 50 surged 842 points (3.64 percent) to 23,965.50, and the BSE Sensex spiked 2,841.50 points (3.81 percent) to 77,458 backed by buying across sectors after a significant gap-up opening following the US-Iran agreement to a two-week ceasefire. Donald Trump had threatened Iran to wipe out a whole civilization if they did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the key waterway used for supplying 20 percent of global oil.

At the same time, the rupee appreciated by 0.27 percent to 92.58 against the US dollar, having already risen sharply from a record low of 95.23 on March 30, while oil prices dropped 8.8 percent to $94.33 a barrel.

On the medium- and long-term charts, Federal Bank is in a strong uptrend, forming a series of higher tops and bottoms. With the close on Tuesday, the stock also surpassed its past three-week resistance zone of Rs 273 on a closing basis, indicating a positive bias. The stock is well above the 20-day SMA (Rs 268), which reconfirms the bullish trend. The daily strength indicator, RSI, is in positive territory, quoting above the 50 mark, which indicates rising strength.

Godrej Properties | CMP: Rs 1,605



With Tuesday's close, Godrej Properties decisively broke out past the couple of weeks’ down-sloping trendline at the Rs 1,555 level on a closing basis, accompanied by huge volume, indicating a short-term trend reversal.

On the daily chart, the RSI strength indicator has shown positive divergence, indicating rising strength at lower levels. The daily and weekly strength-indicating RSI is in positive terrain, indicating rising strength.

On the daily chart, Poonawalla Fincorp experienced a short-term trend reversal when it broke out from the down-sloping trendline at the Rs 395 level. Currently, the stock is sustaining above the previous week’s high and also above the 20-day SMA (Rs 400). The daily strength-indicating RSI is in positive terrain, indicating rising strength.

The benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty rallied sharply on Wednesday, tracking firm global markets and a steep decline in crude oil prices after the US and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire. Meanwhile, the RBI Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously decided to maintain status quo on the policy interest rate with a neutral stance.

At around 11:10 am, the Sensex jumped 2,919.04 points or 3.91 percent to 77,535.62, while the broader Nifty advanced to 23,992.25, up 3.76 perent or 868.60 points. Market breadth was positive as about 3473 shares advanced, 320 shares declined and 101 shares unchanged.

Fourteen of the 16 major sectoral indices advanced, with IT and pharma being the laggards. The broader Nifty smallcap100 and Nifty midcap100 indices rose up to 3.5 percent.

Heavyweight financial stocks gained around 5 percent, while auto and realty indices advanced 5 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

Shares of Larsen &amp;amp; Toubro jumped 7 percent. InterGlobe Aviation surged 10 percent, hitting its upper circuit and triggering a temporary trading halt.

1) US-Iran ceasefire: The announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the US and Iran lifted investor sentiment. US President Donald Trump termed the development a &quot;big day for world peace&quot; and indicated progress towards diplomatic engagement.

2) Crude oil prices decline: Brent crude fell 13.24 percent to USD 94.80 per barrel, easing concerns over energy supply disruptions.

&quot;The key trigger is the announcement of a two-week pause in US military action, alongside Iran’s agreement to facilitate safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This has significantly reduced immediate concerns around energy supply disruptions, which had been a major overhang for global markets,&quot; Hariprasad K, Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth, said.

He added that easing geopolitical tensions has led to a sharp fall in crude prices, which is positive for India from inflation and currency perspectives.

3) Global markets rise: Asian markets, including South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, traded higher. Wall Street futures also advanced over 3 percent.

5) RBI rate pause: The Reserve Bank kept interest rates unchanged amid hopes of a global recovery on the back of ceasefire in the six-week-long US/Isreal-Iran conflict. This is the first monetary policy review after the government announced a fresh inflation target for the RBI last month. The government has asked the RBI to maintain retail inflation at 4 percent with a margin of 2 percent on either side for another five years ending March 2031.

Announcing the first bi-monthly monetary policy for the current fiscal, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has unanimously decided to retain short-term lending rate or repo rate at 5.25 percent with a neutral stance. The rate cut pause comes on the back of the consumer price index (CPI) based headline retail inflation that moved closer to the RBI's medium-term target of 4 per cent at 3.21 per cent in February.

Based on the recommendation of the MPC, the RBI reduced the repo rate by 25 bps each in February, April, and December 2025 and 50 basis points in June amidst easing retail inflation. India's retail inflation dropped to a historic low of 0.25 percent in October 2025, marking the lowest level since the Consumer Price Index (CPI) series was introduced. However, the rupee declined to historic low and crossed 95 against a dollar last month making imports costlier, raising fears of rise in inflation. Rupee touched a record low of 95.21 on March 30, 2026.

6) Value buying: Analysts said the ceasefire triggered value buying across risk assets, with gains seen in equities and precious metals, while oil prices declined.

7) Volatility declines: India VIX, the market’s volatility gauge, declined 5 percent to 19.85. A fall in the index indicates reduced market uncertainty and supports bullish sentiment.

On Tuesday, the Sensex had risen 509.73 points or 0.69 per cent to close at 74,616.58, while the Nifty gained 155.40 points or 0.68 per cent to settle at 23,123.65.

Anand James, Chief Market Strategist at Geojit Investments, said &quot;The 24,400 objective with which we had begun the week, is just a leap away. Yesterday’s dips were caught between our pivot of 22,790 and the downside marker of 22,640, allowing a late surge. While we are poised for an upside gapped opening, gains may be limited to 23,950 initially, but the onward march will resume, if dips thereof do not stretch beyond 23,465.&quot;

Dollar Index (Slips)

The dollar sank to its lowest level in two weeks at the start of trading in Asia on Wednesday, while the euro, yen, Aussie and kiwi rallied hard after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran.



US Bond Yield (Down)

The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury and the 2-year U.S. Treasury slipped 4 basis points and 7 basis points at 4.24% and 3.71%, respectively.



Asian Currencies (Up)

Except the Indonesian Rupiah, all other currencies traded higher in early Wednesday trade, led by gains in the South Korean Won, followed by the Philippine Peso and Thai Baht.



Crude (Falls)

Oil prices dived on Wednesday after a two-week ceasefire in the Middle East spurred a relief rally as investors cheered the possible resumption of oil and gas flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.



Gold (Gains)

Gold extended gains on Wednesday as markets reassessed near-term risks after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had agreed to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for two weeks, easing fears of energy-driven inflation.



Fund Flow Action

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) sold equities worth ₹8692 crore on April 7, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) purchased equities of nearly ₹8,000 crore.
