The equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty settled nearly 1 percent lower in a volatile session on Monday, as the failure of US-Iran negotiations raised concerns of a prolonged conflict and pushed crude oil prices higher.

The Sensex declined 702.68 points or 0.91 percent to settle at 76,847.57. During the day, it had plunged 1,681.93 points or 2.16 per cent to 75,868.32.

The Nifty opened sharply lower but recovered gradually on buying in heavyweight stocks across sectors. It ended 207.95 points or 0.86 percent down at 23,842.65.

Analysts said the 23,650 level is seen as a key support for the Nifty after it slipped below the 23,850 mark.

Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, said the 23,950–23,980 zone is likely to act as a key resistance. &quot;A sustained move above 23,980 could extend the pullback rally towards 24,100, followed by 24,230 in the short term. On the downside, 23,700–23,650 will serve as an immediate support zone for the index,&quot; he said.

Broader market indices, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100, also opened lower in line with the benchmark indices but recovered from intraday lows, indicating selective buying at lower levels.

Ajit Mishra, SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said the Nifty tested its crucial support at the short-term moving average near 23,500 and managed to recover. &quot;Sustaining above this level is important for any further rebound; otherwise, the bias may turn negative to sideways. Traders are advised to remain cautious, focus on stock-specific opportunities based on relative strength, and adopt a hedged approach,&quot; he added.

After a strong rebound in the previous session, the Indian equity market came under pressure on April 13, after the recent talks between the US and Iran failed without a deal.

Renewed geopolitical concerns and sharp jump in crude oil prices triggered a gap-down opening, dragging Nifty below 23600, but witnessed a mild recovery during the session to close above 23800 level.

At close, the Sensex was down 702.68 points or 0.91 percent at 76,847.57, and the Nifty was down 207.95 points or 0.86 percent at 23,842.65.

The market will remain shut on April 14 (Tuesday) on account of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Jayanti.

Among sectors, except power, defence, telecom, all other sectors ended in the red with FMCG, auto, IT, energy, oil &amp;amp; gas down 1% each.

HDFC Life, Adani Enterprises, ICICI Bank, NTPC, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles were among top gainers on the Nifty, while losers included Maruti Suzuki, Eicher Motors, Reliance Industries, Bajaj Finance, Interglobe Aviation.

Broader indices declined but outperformed the benchmark indices, with the Nifty Midcap and Smallcap indices falling 0.5% each.

In stock-specific action, Puravankara Limited jumped nearly 11% after reporting a sharp 190% rise in Q4 sales, Enviro Infra Engineers surged 12% on securing two projects worth ₹972.2 crore.

On the downside, InterGlobe Aviation declined 2% as crude oil prices climbed above $100 per barrel and Unichem Laboratories Limited fell 1% following a recall of Buspirone Hydrochloride tablets in the US, while Swiggy Limited dropped 3% after co-founder Lakshmi Nandan Reddy Obul resigned as Whole-Time Director.

Meanwhile, AstraZeneca Pharma India Limited advanced over 5% after receiving approval to sell and distribute Acalabrutinib tablets. Dev Accelerator Limited gained 2% on signing an enterprise deal worth ₹110 crore, and Jyoti CNC shares tumbled 14% as French officials look into firm's arm for defying export rules.

Outlook for April 15

Nifty witnessed a volatile session, dipping to an intraday low of 23,555 before recovering to close around 23,830, down nearly 220 points. The recovery from lower levels indicates buying interest emerging near support, helping the index trim a significant part of its losses.

Despite the negative close, the ability to bounce back suggests that the downside is being absorbed, keeping the broader structure intact for now.

Technically, the 23,500–23,600 zone remains a crucial support area, which has once again held firm. On the upside, 24,000–24,100 will act as immediate resistance, and the index needs to reclaim this zone for a stronger recovery.

The overall setup points towards a range-bound and volatile market, driven largely by global developments.

Traders should remain cautious, avoid aggressive positions, and focus on reacting to key levels as the market continues to search for direction.

Market sentiment was dented after negotiations between the United States and Iran collapsed, further compounded by reports that US President Donald Trump ordered a blockade of Iranian ports, raising concerns over global trade and energy supply disruptions.

Despite the jittery start, the index found support near its 20 day EMA, which acted as a crucial short term support zone. From these lower levels, Nifty gradually staged a steady recovery through the intraday session, indicating buying interest emerging at lower bands. Eventually, the index managed to pare some of its losses and settled at the 23842 mark, ending the day lower by 0.86%. On the daily chart, Nifty formed a sizeable bullish candle, suggesting resilience and a potential attempt to stabilize after the sharp opening decline.

Going ahead, the 23950–23980 zone is likely to act as a key resistance for the index. A sustained move above 23980 could extend the pullback rally towards 24100, followed by 24230 in the short term. On the downside, 23700–23650 will serve as an immediate support zone for the index.

The Nifty opened sharply lower; however, a gradual recovery in heavyweight stocks across sectors helped trim losses as the session progressed. It settled 207.95 points or 0.86 percent lower to end at 23,842.65.

The sell-off was broad-based, with auto, FMCG, and IT stocks leading the decline, while select pockets within the energy and pharma space showed relative resilience. Broader markets also remained under pressure, with midcap and smallcap indices declining around 0.5% each.

Index heavyweights HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank declined 2.7 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively.

Oil marketing companies were under pressure, with BPCL down 3.6 percent, HPCL falling 4.3 percent and Indian Oil declining 3 percent amid concerns over higher crude prices impacting margins.

Both benchmark indices had rallied around 6 percent last week, marking their strongest weekly gains in more than five years, supported by optimism around a US-Iran ceasefire.
Key factors behind market decline
1) Geopolitical concerns: The US and Iran failed to reach a peace agreement after 21-hour talks in Pakistan, raising doubts over the continuation of a two-week ceasefire.

Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research at Religare Broking, said &quot;The weakness was primarily driven by escalating geopolitical tensions following the collapse of US–Iran talks, which triggered a sharp spike in crude oil prices and weighed on global sentiment. Additionally, fresh weakness in the rupee, continued foreign institutional outflows, and subdued global equity markets further dampened investor confidence.&quot;

2) Higher crude prices: Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, surged 7.33 percent to USD 102.2 per barrel. US President Donald Trump said the US Navy would begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions and pushing oil prices higher.

&quot;With the failure of US-Iran peace talks and Trump’s declaration of a US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, uncertainty and crude prices have spiked. Brent at around USD 103 is emerging as a threat to the economy and markets,&quot; V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, said.

3) Weak global cues: Asian markets, including South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, were trading lower. Wall Street futures were also down up to 1 percent, indicating a weak opening for US markets.

4) Weak rupee: The rupee depreciated 49 paise to 93.32 against the US dollar, weighed down by higher crude prices and a firm American currency amid geopolitical uncertainty. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 93.30 against the US dollar and slipped further to 93.32, down 49 paise from its previous close.

5) India VIX rises: The volatility index, or India VIX, rose to 21.3 from 18.8 on Friday, indicating increased market uncertainty.
